Peter Langone Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2001.
On the Job, Together
A neighboring volunteer fire company called the one in Roslyn, N.Y., for help on Thanksgiving 2000. A rescue specialist was needed to extricate a young man from a wrecked car. The company, and the driver, were lucky. Two rescue specialists, Peter and Thomas Langone, arrived and cut him loose.

In their time off, Firefighter Peter Langone and Police Officer Thomas Langone were leaders at the Roslyn Rescue Fire Company, training other volunteers in the skills they learned at work.

Peter Langone, 41, a driver with Engine Company 252 in Bushwick, Brooklyn, a specialty unit, was the "elder statesman" at the firehouse, according to Firefighter James O'Connor. He drove the truck and showed rookies the ropes, speaking bluntly at times. "He never beat around the bush," Firefighter O'Connor said. His wife, Terri, and his daughters Nikki, 9, and Karli, 5, were often seen around the firehouse, and they took weekend trips to the country. They were planning a family trip to Disney World this winter. He also liked to hunt, and in good years that meant venison stew in the firehouse.

Thomas Langone, 39, of Emergency Squad 10 in Brooklyn, went to Oklahoma City in 1995 to help with recovery efforts after the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. "His entire day went at a million miles an hour," a fellow officer said. "He didn't wait to be called." He also taught firefighting techniques for Nassau County, and was working toward a bachelor's degree from Empire State College's distance learning program so he could teach when he retired from the department.

With his wife, JoAnn; his daughter, Caitlin, 12; and his son, Brian, 10, Thomas Langone took a trip to Rhode Island last summer, touring mansions and enjoying the cliff walk in Newport.

Their jobs brought the brothers together. In 1990, the Roslyn volunteers went to the scene of the Avianca crash in Oyster Bay. In 1993, working for New York City, the brothers went to the World Trade Center bombing. On Sept. 11, they arrived separately not long before the twin towers collapsed.

While I have never met Peter, from what I have read from this guest book, and news article, he was an amazing man. A loving father, and husband, a brave firefighter and much, much more. I have been given a research project as part of a trip I am going on to the World Trade Center Memorial. As part of this project, I will be making a memorial for Peter. Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about him. So, I would really appreciate it if someone who knew him, better than I could e-mail me and teach me more about him. God bless Peter, and his family, and all of those who died on that fateful day.

I'm a NYS EMT for Superior Ambulance in Binghamton NY. I just completed the 110 story 9-11 Memorial Stair Climb yesterday. Upon our arrival to the event, we each received a lanyard with photos of 4 of the fallen 343 firefighters we would be climbing in memory of. Peter Langone was on mine. We truly will NEVER forget the service, dedication and ultimate sacrifice these brothers and sisters served for. To the Langone Family: may you find comfort knowing Peter is still touching lives to this day! His heroism and bravery is an inspiration, and his story will remain with me!

My wife and I were watching the fire fighter TV show "Rescue Me" based in NYC and saw a shot of the list of names of heros who passed away and saw Peters name. Not too many of us Langones in this world and we wanted to give our condolences. God bless you Peter and your family.

I am so sorry for the loss of Peter. From what I know he was a great man, whom he and his brother both could put a smile on anyone's face and passed away knowing that he had accomplished his dream; to save and fight for people's lives. I am currently working on research about Peter for a trip I am taking to visit the World Trade Center Memorial site. If anyone has any information about him or what building he and his brother fought in, please respond. Thanks so much, and I am sorry for the loss of Peter.

I was celebrating a friend's birthday in Aspen and I attended a touching 9/11 memorial at the town fire station. I was given a red rose with Peter's name and photo on it, and like many others, I felt that I had to know who this hero was. It is so moving to learn of his devotion, his service, his family and his brother, Tom.

My prayers are with Peter, Tom and their loved ones.

JUST GOT HOME AFTER MIDNIGHT AND WENT RIGHT TO THE COMPUTER TO FIND OUT WHAT I COULD ABOUT THIS KIA AMERICAN HERO. READ DOZENS OF THE BOOK ENTRIES AND AM TOUCHED TO MY VERY HEART AND SOUL.
GOD BLESS YOU PETER AND YOU THOMAS.

PROUD TO RUN IN YOUR HONOR.

Had the pleasure of knowing and serving in Roslyn Rescue with both Tom and Peter Langone. These men dedicated their lives to people in need. The selfless act of running into a burning building where most are running out is all you need to know about these brothers. They will never be forgotten and may God Bless their souls and their families.

Pete was the best man at my wedding to his friend Billy, that is how I met him and his then fiance Teri. All though his friend and I divorced some years later, the four of us spend alot of fun times together. It's funny the things you never forget for some reason, but one night we were all out at dinner, and I remember Pete leaning over to the table next to us and asking the man at the table, whom we did not know, what he was eating and just reached over with his fork for a taste! We all laughed, including the man at that table. I was devastated to learn of Pete and Tommys' death and was comforted when I attended the tribute to them at their firehouse. Although we lost touch over the years, I always thought of the fun times we all shared together. You also had a soft side to you, I will never forget the day your friend and I got married, you saw me in my wedding dress and you told me how beautiful I looked. I never forgot that, and I will never forget you. Pete you were a wonderful man, a true hero,God Bless you and your family.

I grew up in Roslyn Heights on Garden Street just blocks away from the Rescue firehouse. I came across the Langone name years ago as I was in Karen Langone's 4th grade class at East Hills School when she died. Not sure if there's a relation but if so I just had to write and express my sympathy as so much tragedy should never hit one family. My family is still on Long Island and it has been very hard to be so far away from them. My thoughts are with the entire Langone family.

David Bevers

September 12, 2002

I received a white wooden cross with Peter's name on it at a candle light vigil for all the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. I looked for one with a firefighter's name on it as I, too, am a firefighter. As I have read about Peter, it sounds not only like a guy that could have taught me a lot, but also the type of firefighter I want to be. I will continue to think and pray for him and his family. I am also carrying his name inside my fire helmet, so that from this day forward I will carry on the traditions of the fire service and the job we do in his honor.

God Bless Peter and his family.

I have never met Peter Langone or any of his family, but I pulled a slip of paper with his name on it from a basket at the end of a memorial mass today at Holy Name Cathedral in downtown Chicago, so I would like any of his friends or relatives who may read this to know that he is in my thoughts this evening, and that from today on, whenever I hear someone mention September 11, I will always think of him.

August 23, 2002

I would see Pete several days a week when 252 would do their grocery shopping at STOP & SHOP. As a group they would "discuss" what to cook and how much they needed. I used to tease them that they were worse than a bunch of old women! Pete was always the down to earth gentleman of the group. Squad 252 still comes in to shop but it is not the same, just as life is not the same since September 11th.

Please know that I keep the Langone family in my thoughts and prayers to give them strength, to give them peace.

I will always remember Peter as being one of the most self-confident, strongest and yet somehow gentlest human beings I have ever met. I remember in High School how Peter seemingly towered over most of us, yet always took the time to make everyone around him feel at ease and in the company of a friend. Although I did not have the fortune of keeping in touch with Peter after High School, I also remember being amazed at our 20 year reunion at how he still possessed the wonderful qualities of strengh, sincerity, compassion and sensitivity. Peter was truly always a hero and we have all suffered a terrible loss. Thank you Peter for all you have given us and you will forever remain an influence in my life. God bless you.

As we were growing up in Roslyn, you were rather quiet when everyone else in our graduating class spoke about the great colleges they were going to or the wonderful opportunities that awaited them. They were just waiting to get out in the world! You never spoke much about it and I guess you always knew you would be sticking around, very sure of what the future held for you. Ironically, you were the one that turned out to be our class' greatest hero. In the name of the Roslyn High School Class of '78, I salute you for the honor and dignity with which you spent your short but very meaningful life. I'd also like to extend my most heartfelt condolences to your wife and daughters.

We are extremely sorry for your loss of Peter and Thomas. Upon reading their story, I closed my eyes and prayed. I felt a warmth radiate from within and I cried. I have never met either man but they have truly touched my life in a positive way. May you always be gently surrounded by their love. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Peter and Thomas.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
