Gerard Nevins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 1, 2001.
Fireman and Farmer

Gerard T. Nevins lived a life of sweet contradictions. His primary job was fighting fires. But when he was not pulling people from burning buildings, he was tending to his small farm in the backyard of his house in Campbell Hall, N.Y.

"It was a way he could totally disconnect from all the madness of Manhattan," his brother Stephen Nevins said. "He would just make his way through the community every day as if he was just a farmer."

In his neighborhood, people recognized Firefighter Nevins, 46, as the man who raised pigs, goats and chickens and sold fresh eggs. He was also known as a doting father to Daniel, 7, and Andrew, 5.

Among the men at Rescue 1 in Midtown Manhattan, Firefighter Nevins was a keeper of traditional values. He was an 18-year veteran of the department who vehemently opposed ordering take-out food because he thought that cooking together helped to cement the brothers' bond.

To his wife Marie, Firefighter Nevins was simply a devoted husband, whom she fell in love with at first sight in 1979. "It was just one of those things where he looked at me, and I melted and that was it," she said. "It was that way for the next 20 years."

Dad I miss you every single day. I am eighteen now, a long way from that little beach blonde blue eye kid that you would remember. I know you are always guiding me, through thick and thin. I am thinking about you and your family today. I found out a few years ago that you lost your husband on 9/11. I was so sad to hear that because I know he was your best friend. So sorry to hear that you now have two boys and that they will have to grow up without the love of Gerry. You are in my prayers.

I would not be able to imagine how heart pounding and breath taking it would have been to bed in Mr. Nevins shoes. I think it is honorable to be one of the many that did not turn from the explosions, but one to dive into the building to help others in need. My father was a volunteer firefighter and I know how seriously he took his job and he was just filling in. I'm most positive that Mr. Nevins loved his job dearly and would lend a hand to anyone who needed it and for that I pray for him and his family on the anniversary of 9/11 and pray for the families that he saved in the fight. Mr. Nevins I take my hat off to you, thank you.

It hard to believe that 10 years has gone by since that day when New York came to a hault. My prayers are with his wife Marie and two sons Daniel and Andrew. I will alway remember Gerry from Tappan Zee High School football team, as I cheered many time at those games, as Tappan Zee first male cheerleader. May God bless and keep his hands on his family. As Gerry rest and wait for the resurrection when we all shall be with the Lord.

I work for Hendersonville Fire Dapartment in Hendersonville, TN. Yesterday marking the 10th year since the attack, 28 of my fellow brothers from Hendersonville along with 315 other brothers and sisters climbed 110 stories in honor of those who lost their lives protecting others. I was giving the name Gerard Nevins. So I went off to the side to say a prayer for the Nevins' family. Never having met Mr. Nevins but being a FF/Paramedic for 5 years his picture and name helped me make those 110 stories. I am not sure on how to get or request more information about Mr. Nevins but if someone could give some insight on how to do so I would appreciate it.

September 11, 2011

Today I marched down the streets of Portland Maine as a firefighter in memory of our fallen bothers and sisters. Before the march began our family members were handed cards with names of FDNY & NYPD personnel who were lost on 9/11, My wife was handed Jerry's name, she marched along with me to honor him for what he did on this day in 2001. As we marched, all Firefighters and family members carried every lost person close to their heart to remind everyone that they will never be forgotten, as people came out into the city street to watch I could see the response was not that, people do remember. As our ceremony ended I wanted to know who was Gerard Terence Nevins and I have learned he was an amazing man. You are missed and never will be forgotten.

I bought some t shirts of Gerry on March 18th 1999. We had just marched in the parade the day before,I just met Rescue 1 by mistake. Out walking that morning, Rescue 1 had a box on 8th ave. I was told to walk to their quarters so I could buy some t shirts that I wanted to buy for myself and a friend. When we got there, I met Gerry. He showed myself, my father who is also a piper with the band, and my mother who came down for the ride, around the firehouse and also offered coffee to us.He was very sincere, and very proud of his firehouse and of his crew. I am very sorry for your loss. I thought you might like to hear this story about your loved one.

Hi Gerry, its been awhile.. I grew up down the street from you in Orangeburg and delivered newspapers to you and your Uncles house next door in Bell Ans.. I recall that your Mom and Aunt would invite me in from time to time to get warmed up and talk in the winter months as your house was the last on my route before my bike ride home, and I thought what a nice family you have. I recall the last time I saw you was at a party in High School, now a long time ago.

I had heard that you had become a fireman in New York and thought that a noble and challenging job. I was saddened to hear that you were there that day in the Trade Center out helping others lives.

-It is great to read of the tributes to your life, and of the family you loved, and your small farm.. My best and most sincere condolences to your family and friends who love you and miss you.

Your in my prayers and I know your in the place of Light.. -someday we'll talk again.. Mark

Hello, I am a student at Clements High School in Sugar Land, Tx and I would like to pay my repects to Mr. Nevin's family. God is with you. I found out of your loss because I am doing a history project on the September 11th tragedy and my teacher Mr. Madden put out a list of names (people who lost their lives) and all students in his class have to make a poster board project identifying people who risked their lives for our country. Then, he will get them all together and make a 'Wall of Rememberance'. Well, I have to go now but I just wanted to say that I am deeply sorry for your loss. Thank you for your time.

I admired the devotion you had to one other you another and the devotion you both had to the boys. I know how heartbroken you are but I also know the kind of person you are and you will get through each day through your strength and because of your beautiful sons. You will always have the memories of a devoted husband who adored you, the devoted father who loved Danny and Andrew, the caring neighbor and friend to many, and the heroic man you were married to. Keep these thoughts and memories close to your heart and let them comfort you when the days get tough. God bless you and your family! Love, Joan Fleischmann

We thank Gerard for his devotion at helping others as a firefighter. Such a profession comes with a warm and caring heart. We thank Gerard for sharing his heart with so many others. We are deeply sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Mrs. Nevins and family:

Yesterday I purchased a "Mercy Band" with your husbands name on it. I did not have the honor of personally knowing Gerard. But, the tributes I have read brought me to tears. Tears of sadness for his death and tears of joy for the amount of people's lives he touched. It made me realize what a remarkable, caring and brave person your husband was. I am honored to be able to wear a braclet bearing his name. I am the mother of a 6 year old and can't imagine the pain and sadness you and your children have experienced. I didn't know anyone personally from the 9/11 tragedy, but wearing this braclet with Gerard's name on it is my way of never forgetting one of those people and also their family. May knowing that he is at peace with our Heavenly Father bring you comfort. God Bless all of you.

Dear Mrs. Nevins and family:

I noticed your husband's name on the list of fire fighters. I do not know if we may be distantly related or not but I am sending this to you to extend from my family to yours our deepest sympathy in your loss of a truly great American.

You and your family must have been proud of Gerry when he received his awards in June of 2000.

I am sure that this is an extremely hard time for you and your family, however, do not forget that God is always with us and gives us the strength to get through times when bad things happen to good people.

I did not know Gerry but to remember him and never forget what he was trying to do in the line of duty at the World Trade Center, I will keep his picture as the wallpaper on my computer, because he is the Bravest of All.

May God bless you and your family!

Dearest Marie, Daniel, & Andrew,

Marie, you & I shared many stories while we were "Team Moms" during our "Daniel's" 1999-2000 baseball season. I remember talking to you about Gerry's very special "Decoration" and how excited you & your boys, and others, were for him. May God Bless You and fill your hearts with his love and herosim, as his angelic wings embrace you all throughout your lives.

If there is anything I can do to help you, please do not hesitate to call me.

Dear Maria, Andrew & Daniel

We want you to know you have been in our thoughts and prayers since we heard of Gerry's heroism. Our memories of Gerry is that he always gave to others and I will never forget him delivering eggs to our mailbox or the times we saw him working in the yard. We know he was an extra ordinary man and we are honored to have known him.

We sincerely love all of you and will always keep you in our prayers.
