Robert Chin Obituary

Cheery Morning Greeting
When Suk Tan Chin posted an inquiry about her youngest brother, Robert, on the Web site of Fiduciary Trust, one reply in particular touched her heart. A woman said the two had not known each other, but from the photograph she recognized the young man who had passed by her daily, with an open smile and a ringing "Good morning!" Robert Chin, a Xerox employee who worked at Fiduciary, was a sweet man - enthusiastic, helpful, a touch naïve. He didn't need a lot to be satisfied. At 33 and single, he lived in Brooklyn with his parents, Chinese immigrants whom he supported. He was devoted to them, and to baseball.

"Robert loved playing outfield," his sister recalled, "because to him that was freedom." And he had another great passion: karaoke. He was a weekend regular at the Point After, a Brooklyn sports bar that features the sing-alongs. Mr. Chin was an admirer of Billy Joel and the Police; he loved belting out Neil Diamond's "America." For the last few Saturday nights, said his buddy of 20 years, Billy Tsevdos, friends have been holding candlelight vigils for Mr. Chin outside the bar. "Then we go inside and sing," he said.

To the family of Robert Chin, I am 11 years old. I grew up in Brooklyn, but now live in Connecticut. I never knew Robert, but I have a 9/11 project in school, and I chose Robert Chin to do an act of kindness in his memory. I started by googling him, and when I read the story about him buying his classmate's artwork, it really touched me because it made me remember selling my art and comic books when I was younger. I will never forget how happy it made me feel when someone liked and supported my art. Now when I think about the tragedy of September 11th, I will think about Robert Chin and how through his positivity and love of his friends and family he made people feel good about themselves, and isn't that what a life well lived is really all about?

In My Pocket

I have memories in my pocket.
They rattle among the change.

My memories of you are treasures I carry wherever I go.

They are stored in bits and pieces, parts of a beautiful whole
They give me comfort when I think I am alone.

Yes, I have memories in my pocket, like so much other stuff I keep there.

But of all the treasures I have, it’s the memories of you that are the most precious.

I can't believe it... I was just thinking about Robert, I haven't seen Robert since we were in Grade school together but I never forgot him. He was such a good guy, good kid, just good. We bought drawings that I made and made me feel good about myself. He always made you feel good. Looking back, I wish we had been better friends.

My best to all those who knew and loved him.

I'm so very sad today.

Robert and I used to play basketball at Kelly Park with Adam Strum, Steve Ettinger, Frank Sotolongo, Billy Tzevdos and many others. I didn't even know Robert had perished in the WTC until I saw his picture in the newspaper. Ironically enough, my wife and I had just seen Robert in Kmart on Bay Parkway weeks before that tragic day; which was the first time I had seen him in quite a number of years.

Robert, you will be missed dearly. May heaven hear the angelic karaoke singing you took with you.

Dearest Robert, My Sweet Little Brother and Only Sibling,

Your big sister and your parents miss you so terribly. We know that you are in a good place and your spirit shines on us. We have come to know so many of your friends and co-workers, who told us of your love and kindness which you shared with all of us.

CYAC (Catholic Young Adult Community) had a mass for you yesterday that was beautiful. I met some of your friends from CYAC, including Mary Ann DeLuca and Kathy Somma, who told me that her six-year old niece remembers you teaching her how to play softball when you stayed behind after your own game to coach the children. Another woman named Cathy also said that you taught her how to hit her first ball. They said they can still hear you and the little kids laughing.

You left behind so much love Robert, so many things that you shared, your love for baseball, photography, and karaoke. Your love for helping others and your deepest wish for World Peace. Your memory will always live on. Rest in Peace, Sweet Brother. We will make sure you did not live in vain.

Love Always,

Your Big Sister,

Suk Tan

Sweet Robert,

How sorry I am, how sorry we all are, not have you with us. I know you are in a wonderful place, singing and playing baseball.

I miss you very much and I wanted to always thank you for watching out for me those days in college. Specifically, I want to thank you for following me into the street when I would check to see if the B3 bus was coming down Avenue U. You are an angel! God bless you Robert Chin.

NOT A DAY GOES BY THAT I DON'T MISS YOU, MY DEAR FRIEND. IT'S BEEN OVER SIX MONTHS & I'M STILL AMAZED THAT GOD COULD'VE TAKEN SUCH A GREAT HUMAN BEING AWAY FROM US SO PREMATURELY.

I HOPE TO BE REUNITED WITH YOU IN HEAVEN IN THE FUTURE. BE WELL & ALWAYS KNOW YOU LEFT SO MANY PEOPLE THAT LOVE & CARE ABOUT YOU HERE ON EARTH.

Dear Robert,

Both you and my brother Ruben Esquilin, Jr. (also lost at the WTC) were on the same company "baseball team".....I wish I had the opportunity to meet with you. Your sister speaks beautiful words about you and I'm happy that I had the opportunity to meet with her at Ruben's memorial service. I can't believe that we're ALL going through this pain but I'm sure you're looking over your family and Ruben doing the same for us. Take care of each other up in heaven, okay? God Bless you and your loving family.

Eileen and the Esquilin Family.

Robert,

I will miss that sweet smile and gentle soul. Out of the nefarious acts of 9/11 came some good, as I've gotten to know your sister Suk Tan. She is just as special as you are and you would be proud to know that she is making sure your memory lives on. Last year at Christmas-time I left work early because I was having a lot of pain. While waiting for my husband in the lobby (down on earth), I sat in front of our elevators and looked up at the red banner that spelled out PEACE in many languages, and looked at the beautiful lights and stars hanging from above and thought to myself, "How can anyone want to harm this building and the people in it?" Unfortunately those people exist. Suk Tan was nice enough to forward me your memorial book with the many pictures you took and I saw the beautiful picture of that banner. I'm glad she decided to make Holiday cards from it as well. That picture says it all. Hopefully, we will see peace one day. You will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of all who knew you and through the pictures you took. Everyone loves you and will miss you, Robert. God bless you and your family.

Love ~ Janice

May Robert's karaoke abilities, his enthusiam, his life and love live on in those who love him. May the sorrrow in your hearts be lightened by memories of times shared with Robert. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
