Bernard Favuzza Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2001.
Model Trains a Passion
Each time his wife, Vincenza, got pregnant, Dominick Favuzza would buy a Lionel train set: engine, box cars, caboose and tracks. This was postwar New York in the 1950's.

He did this a month before Bernard's birth. And he did it before his daughters, Janice and Anna, were born. Around Christmas, the shiny trains would clack around the tree.

Bernard Favuzza, who was 52 on Sept. 11, had taken to the hobby. He built a miniature model of Ridgewood, Queens, in his house in Suffern, N.Y. ‹ with a train that whistled through his childhood neighborhood complete with Dietz Coal.

And he took over his dad's tradition of buying the trains for those soon to be born. He bought them for his nephew Kevin, 12, and his grandson Dominick, who is 2 today.

"They were relaxing," Anna Favuzza said of her brother's train hobby. "It's stressful, right? The market. Wall Street. This was a way for him to unwind."

Mr. Favuzza was at Cantor Fitzgerald, above where one of the planes went in. Now his daughters, Donna Posta, 32, and Laura Favuzza, 24, will take care of his trains.

Last night, I was given Bernie's name to wear at "Remembering September 11" service at East Side Lutheran Church--with the request that I pray for his family. Favuzza family--you are being remembered in prayer in Sioux Falls, SD.

Today I was at Suffern high school where my daughter's Pearl River team was playing against Suffern. I saw your name on the dugout with the date of September 11, 2001 and I had to see who you were. I am so sorry that you were killed in that horrific attack. I hope your family is okay and that they are smiling when they think about how much you meant to them instead of crying.

Favuzza Family,
Just the other day I came across a picture of Bernie on our deck during a Ramapo Little League Giants end of the season party. As always he had the biggest smile in the crowd.
I often think about the times playing ice hockey on the pond by your house off of Cherry Lane road. Or the couple of bucks he paid me to wash his Supra as it was parked in front of the house when he would carpool with Jim Musson and my Dad.

I want you to know how much Bernie is missed.

I grew up with Berni. We played hockey together, and hung around the candy store at 71st ave and 60th lane. I lived 3 houses away on 71st ave. After going in the army 1968 I lost contact with all my friends on 71st ave. My deepest sympathy to all. God bless you and God bless Berni in heaven.

Laura,
For a strange reason I am thinking of you and searched for your contact information. The happy memories I have of high school always involved you and I wanted you to know it makes me smile to think of our fun times together planning the nutcracker routines for the orchestra and so on. My father passed away in 2006 and the feeling of loss is deep and forever. My office in 2001 was a few blocks away from your dad's. I wish you well. Would love to reconnect,
Pam

Dear Linda,I only met you a couple of times (The last time was at your house before an Army football game)but I think about you and your daughters quite often because certain things that occur in my life trigger thoughts of Bernie and then to all of you. I'll never forget how he took me under his wing and taught me the whole bond brokering business. We had many things in common(among them was that I,too, married a German girl and had two daughters)and seemed to hit it off right away. We had some great times both in and out of the office and he is someone I'll probably never forget. It's amazing to me when I think about the last time I spent with Bernie. We had a table of 12 people at the Tribeca Grill including John Fiorito,Steve Hoffman,Mario Nardone,Peter Genco,Chris Lunder(all of whom perished in the Towers).Shortly after that dinner , I watched as Bernie and the others stood up from our desk at Garband to announce that they were leaving to start work at Cantor Fitzgerald.....and that's the last time I saw him .I hope you and your daughters are doing as well as can be hoped for and that you continue to make him proud!

Dear Linda, Donna, and Laura,

To Bernies family,my deepest sympathy.I just found out about your loss last year from my sister, I was shocked to say the least. Do you remember when Bernard ( I only knew of him as Bernard)bought the beagle puppy that I had got for my son, but he was unable to keep. I think Donna was about the same age as he was. When you lived on 78th avenue,in my Mom and Dads house. I think about Bernard alot,he was a great guy,and always will be.

My son played hocky at Suffern High School, and I would often sit with Bernie at the Suffern hockey games. He was a great fan, and even came to the State Championships to support the team.

Bernie was a wonderful friend who had the utmost integrity. He helped friends and strangers alike, and asked only in return that we help someone else. This is who he truly was.

I am so sad on this 5th anniversary of his tragic death and everyday. I want to extend my sincere sympathy to his family - particulary to Laura, who joined us at many of the hockey games. I will never forget Bernie Favuzza and the happiness he brought to others.

Donna - 5 years later and I still think of you and your Dad almost every day. I can't imagine how difficult these years have been for you. I hope that you are doing well and that you have found the solace that you needed to continue through this life without bitterness and anger. You are never alone as long as you remember the love. Fondly - Kim

Bernie and I grew up together in Ridgewood and I came to know him by way of my friendship with his sister Janice, who lived next door to my parents in Ridgewood for a number of years. It just came to my attention today that Bernie was one of the victims of 9-11. Although we didn't know each other all that well, we did play baseball and football on many occasions, and my memories of Bernie are ones of a "stand up guy." I want to extend my deepest sympathy to his family, and let them know that those of who knew Bernie will remember him always.

Dear Linda, Donna, and Laura,

This is Cassie, Loretta's daughter, and Bernard was my second cousin. I only remembering meeting all of you once, at Uncle Peter's house in Connecticut, but I remember how warm and funny cousin Bernard was. Mom told me how much Bernard enjoyed hearing about my animal training, and I was touched by his interest in my life, so far away. Losing Bernard is such a tragedy, yet it reminded my how important family is, even those that live on the other side of the country that we don't see very often. My heart goes out to all of you.

Donna, Laura and Linda,

A few months have gone by since the tragic event happened which robbed you all of Bernie. Growing up, he treated my like a third daughter. However, I know the shock and pain of the situation does not go away. Please know that I think of you all often, and Donna, the picture of you and your Dad from your wedding is among the family pictures which line the perimeter of my desk at my office. He was always a voice of reason in my past, and will continue to be so in my future.

We are very sorry for your loss of Bernie. What a warm story about the trains that will now carry on his heart felt tradition of love. May you alway find watching the trains soothing to your hearts. May Bernie's train tradition, his life and love live on in all who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Donna - we go back a long time, now, to elementary school where we first met. I remember the day I met you and all the fun times we had playing at your house on Beaver Hollow Road. I was sad to hear that your father was part of this terrible tragedy. I can't imagine the sorrow and sadness your family is experiencing. Please accept the well-wishes and thoughts from my family to yours. You and your family are forever in our prayers. G-d Bless you all!
