I lived on 74th Street in Glendale NY at the time of 09/11/2001, I was just 7 years old but he was my neighbor, I remember his house, and my block was renamed for firefighter Steven J Bates and I will always remember him and his sacrifice. Thank you

After all these years, one would think the pain and sorrow would diminish. It hasn't. Rosita and I still grieve for all those that were murdered on that day but, we especially still know that the world lost a quality man, Steve Bates. He is missed by many.

Today marks 22 years since you and so many others lost their lives on that tragic day!! Time has not dulled the pain of this tremendous loss! There are so many times you are thought of and so many situations where I will think I wish Steve was here! He would have loved this! Your memory is kept alive by all who loved and cared about you and all who miss your presence in their lives!! Life was more fun with you in it. All we have now are memories which are now treasures!! Loved and missed always!!

Steven,
I still wear your Mercy Band and think of you often. It´s hard to believe an entire generation were born and have now turned 21 since that horrible day.
Time passes and the pain is not as sharp as it once was, but our hearts are still heavy with loss.
God bless you Steven. God bless you and all the innocent souls taken that day. Until the day that you are reunited with those you loved, may God hold you in the palm of his hand.

As the years pass, I still can't believe what happened to all the people that perished that dreadful day.
Stephen is, as far as I know, the only person I knew. The grief Rosita and I felt, and still feel, for our fellow Americans and New Yorkers is beyond words.
But, the sadness we feel for the "What could have been" for Steve Bates is immeasurable. He was such a nice person.
Would he have had children? Grandchildren? Would he make NYFD Captain? Commander?
We'll never know for sure but, I know he would have continued his light to the world.
Rest in peace.

Well, another year has gone by since the tragic event that took so many lives, including Stephen's. We think of him, and the other heroes that lost their lives, most every day. As a New Yorker, I still feel the depth of sadness when I think of the hatred that killed 3,000 of my "brothers and sisters." I don't care if they were from out of state or out of the country, at that terrible moment, they were my brothers and sisters.
I have the utmost admiration, love and respect for the many first responders, such as Steve, that went into harms way while everone else was running away.
God bless them. May they rest in peace.
