Margaret Conner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2001.
Sailing Toward Renewal
When Margaret Conner wanted to escape the chaos of everyday life, she fled her home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and headed for her daughter's boat on Candlewood Lake in Brookfield, Conn. It did not matter that Mrs. Conner was prone to seasickness and could not swim. Sailing on the lake brought her peace and tranquillity.

Back home, Mrs. Conner, 57, was the gatekeeper at Cantor Fitzgerald, a receptionist who was the first person people saw when they got off the elevator on the 103rd Floor of 1 World Trade Center. For many young women at the office, she was a relationship therapist.

"She was just very open and very eager to be there for anyone," said her daughter, Corrine Bounty.

Mrs. Conner and her husband, Frank Conner, were married for 13 years and spent nearly every moment of their free time together, often frequenting Broadway plays and dining out. Every day they recorded and watched Mrs. Conner's favorite soap opera, "The Young and the Restless."

Mrs. Conner was also committed to her daily Bible study. On Sept. 11 her study passage was about the healing and renewal of God.

"I read this passage the next day and was furious with God," Mr. Conner said. "After rereading the passage, I realized that God had fulfilled his message to her. She is now in a place where His ever-renewing life is coursing throughout her body."

0nce again, on 9/11, I am remembering Margaret "Peggy" Conner. As mentioned in my previous remembrances, we did not know each other. We "met" when I decided to see if anyone named Conner had been in the World Trade Center "that day." I discovered that she was just several years older than I and that we shared similar interests. I want her family to know that someone in Virginia is thinking of Peggy today. I am very sorry you lost her so tragically and far too soon.

I think of you many many times but always on 9/11. How special u were. How loved u were by your family. How loved u were by all of us. I know Gods love embraced u as he lifted ur spirit to Heaven. The loss for ur daughter and grand daughter must be unbearable.
I’m so honored to have met u and been ur neighbor for such a short time. You touched my heart deeply. RIP Angel❤

This is my seventh message in memory of Margaret “Peggy” Conner. As stated in my previous messages, I did not know Peggy, but because we share the same last name, I think of her every September ll. From what others have said about her, I feel certain we would have enjoyed being friends. May her family and friends draw some comfort from knowing that Peggy is being remembered today by a Conner in Virginia.

Once again, I am thinking of Margaret Mary Conner on this day, September 11, 2021. Years ago, when I decided to find out if anyone who shared my last name had died that day, I learned of Peggy, a woman just five years older than I. Now, I think of her every year.

On 2015, I wrote:

As the 20th anniversary of “9/11” approaches, Margaret Mary Conner is once again in my thoughts. Her married last name and my maiden name—Conner—is what caused “Peggy” to become the person I remember out of all who died that day. I searched for someone with my name and found her, a woman just five years older than I. Now, 20 years later, I shall continue to think of Peggy, her husband, her family, and her friends. I also shall think of her many coworkers who perished with her. I send my sympathy to all who knew and continue to miss Peggy. She is not forgotten.

On the eve of September 11, I am thinking of Margaret Mary Peggy Conner once again, and I will pause to remember her tomorrow morning. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we never met (I live in the suburbs of Richmond, VA); however, we shared several things in common in addition to our last name. I send my continued sympathy to her family and friends.

I never knew you, but I think of you on September 11. When the list of victims was released, I looked to see if anyone had the last name of Conner. That is when I learned about you and our similarities. In addition to our last name, I, too, cannot swim and get seasick, but I love being near the water. I am very sorry that your life ended tragically and far too soon.

When the names of 9-11 victims were released, I looked to see if there was a Conner on the list. I discovered that there was one, Margaret M. Conner. I have since learned that we share more than the same last name. Like Peggy, I have been a Young and Restless fan for years, and, like Peggy, I cannot swim, but love being near the water. Although we didn't know each other, Peggy Conner will be in my thoughts once again on September 11, 2011.

I am an art teacher from Maine South High School in Park Ridge, Illinois. Our library made bracelets of the names of those who died in the September 11 attacks to wear tomorrow and I recieved Margaret's name. We created art with the students after the attacks so that they could voice their concerns and feelings. One of my students created a series of works, 3 are in an exhibit at the Kennedy Center in D.C. this month in memorial of these attacks. I wish to send my heart felt sympathy to Margaret Conner's family and will be thinking of her tomorrow.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Margaret. May warm memories of times shared with her lighten the sorrow in your hearts. May her warm heart, her life and love live on in those who love her. I, too, believe she found shelter and protection from human pain as God lovingly pulled her into His warm embrace. Cradled in His arms earthly cries became heavenly songs as angels were born. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

To my work mom- I miss seeing your beautiful, bright smile every morning and throughout the day. I miss your advice and how you always looked after us. And especially how you always were in on all the jokes, you always knew who and what we were talking about without us mentioning names or situations. Just like our real moms would.

Make sure you take care of your husband, I spoke to him on email after and I cant imagine what he is going through without his soulmate. And watch over your daughter and her family, I know you will always walk beside them. Until I see you again, I love you...

From the time I first meet you when working with Mike, you were the sweetest person I ever knew. Whenever you called, there was always time to talk to me about my daughter and how things were going. You touched many more people then you know, and I am grateful for the time that I had to know you.
