Babita Guman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2001.
The Best Catch of All
Babita Guman was the type who "doesn't back down," said her husband, Deodat Guman. When a fellow shopper at a market once told her to go back to her country, Mrs. Guman, 33, threw the question back at her. "Why don't you go back to your country?" she asked.

A native of Guyana who moved to the United States as a teenager, Mrs. Guman was a smart, aggressive and flag-waving American who also took charge at home in the Bronx, said her husband and father of her two daughters, ages 6 and 7. "Most guys would say they're the men of the house, but my wife did everything," said Mr. Guman, a bus driver for New York City Transit. "She cooked, she cleaned, she paid the bills. I just went to work and came back."

Mrs. Guman was a computer specialist at Fiduciary Trust Company International on the 97th floor of 2 World Trade Center, but she was about to take a test to become a schoolteacher, Mr. Guman said. Two weeks before the attacks, Mr. Guman took his wife and the girls fishing for the first time. Mrs. Guman, of course, caught a fish. It took Mr. Guman a little longer to catch his, but as he noted to his daughters, "I ended up catching the big one."

It’s been 22 years I was only 10 when we lost you but I always remember your smile. You were always smiling and I remember thinking she’s always so happy. The family is so spaced out now and there’s distance and so much has happened so much has changed I hope you’re proud of the people who love and remember you. Wish we could have spent more time together I would have loved to know you better as an adult. Rest in paradise aunty BiBi.

Hey, Aunty. I know I didnt know you as well as I should have, but I love and miss you. I always think about you around that time and I wish there was something I could have done, even though that's impossible. But never forget that you influenced my life so much, and so did Nano.

Babita and I worked together at the National Multiple Sclerosis Society a few years ago. I enjoyed her humor and her no-nonsense but sensitive approach to life. We owe her our peace. Good bye, Babita, and thank you.

On September 11, 2002 I recieved a card with a person's name who died in the September 11th attacks last year, from my school. On the card I recieved, I got Babita Guman. I read her biology online and just about cried. I couldn't beleive that someone so special to many people's lives died, by simply going to work. Just know that my thoughts and prayers are with you. I believe that Babita Guman will be a huge part in my life too.

I received a Mercy Band with Babita' s name on it. Being from Kansas, wearing it makes me feel closer to those who lost their lives, especially Babita. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family and may they rest assured that all of America views Babita as a hero! I will never forget. God Bless America

I worked with Babita at the MS Society a few years ago, and remember her as a feisty, self assured, no-nonsense colleague. May your memories of her keep you strong during these trying times.

My husband works for Franklin/Templeton and flew out the week following the tragedy to help at the recovery center. He was there to help out because so many computer people were lost...

Reading your bio and seeing your picture brings it all closer to me. I cry for you and keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

We are very sorry for your loss of Babita. May her life, love and strength continue living in those who love her. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Babita.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I received Babita's name on a Mercy Band that was given to me for X-Mas. It comforts me to know that, even though I didn't know Babita, she is now at peace and at home. Take comfort in the fact that she is with her Savior. May God bless you and your entire family.

No words will be shelter enough from your storm of sorrow at the loss of a dear family member, friend. Know that there are many, many of us who wish you a gentler journey as you travel through the times ahead of you. Peace.
