Glen Pettit Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2001.
The Smile Behind a Camera
Glen Pettit took on a lot and never let it slow him down. In addition to being a New York City police officer, he was a TV news cameraman, a freelance photographer, a volunteer fireman and a devotee of Irish tradition and music.

Then there was the endless flood of gifts: from care packages of Skippy peanut butter for friends in East Asia to the prized seat he arranged for his mother at a Christmas Eve mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral, just a row from the mayor and police commissioner. "If he loved you he loved you completely, and he was going to take care of you," recalled Tara Felice, one of his six siblings.

Officer Pettit, 30, had joined the department's video production unit, which makes training and promotional videos. "His greatest love was being behind a camera, composing a shot," said his partner, Officer Scott Nicholson. The video unit responded to the World Trade Center attack hoping to get footage for an annual promotional tape it makes called "Heroes."

"Glen was telling us, 'I'm gonna get in close; you stay and get the establishing shots, get the rescue workers responding,' " Officer Nicholson recalled. "I looked over and Glen was running past me, camera in hand, heading toward the towers."

It was such a pleasure getting to know and working with Glenn in the NYIT newspaper during my under grad and learning the basics of photography from him. Some of which I am passing down to my 15 year old daughter who is now starting to showing a passion for photography as well. Thank you my friend!! Your light still shines bright in this world.

When I was about 12 years old, around the year 1999 or so, my parents took my family into the City to see the tree. While on the LIRR train headed to Manhattan, an individual sitting near us began talking to my dad. He stated that he recognized him as a Suffolk County Detective that he had filmed while working for his other job at News 12. After further conversation we learned all about his other job, a NYPD Police Officer. Eventually we made it into the city and voiced our concern on which subway to take. We were unsure of how to get to the Rockefeller Christmas Tree using the Subway system. Glen decided he would not only show us but he would walk us right onto the train directly. I only knew Glen for a matter of a train ride, plus or minus a few minutes, but he made us feel like we had known him for a lifetime. He helped my family on his way to work which he certainly did not have to do. Cop to Cop, him to my dad, he stated, in sum and substance, that's what we do for each other (privately escorting all ten of us onto the subway). Now at 28 years old, and a police officer for the past six years, I strive to represent the courtesy and professionalism I witnessed of Glen Pettit to my family. Truly a gentleman and heroic individual. I'm not sure this brief story does our encounter with Glen any justice but I hope its meaningfulness reminds the world of how simple things from a Police Officer can have a lasting impact. May Glen K. Pettit rest is peace and he never be forgotten.

I worked with Glen during my News 12 Long Island days. We always joked how 2 Glen's were better than one and then he met my father, also a Glenn. He shouted out to someone, "we're 3 Glenn's!" Laughed so hard and my dad was so embarrassed.
I'll never forget when my dad called me in Dec '01 to break the news to me they had found Glen's body below the South Tower. I broke down that moment and still cry every time, every year they read Glen's name in the Reading of the Names 9-11 ceremony. I cry like I cried at his memorial service after 9-11. I cry because I miss him, I cry because I love him, and I cry because he died sacrificing for all of us, which was true to his personality. Always giving. I have since become friends with his brothers Joe and Neil. I am a better man for knowing him and them. I will never forget my buddy Glen. Never. LOVE!!!

I knew you for a short period, several years ago. Still, I never forgot how close knit, warm & fun loving, your family was. My family never forgot you (Particularly, my mother who always chastised me for losing touch with that, "nice Irish boy with the blue eye."). It seems, you have made a great impact on many of us, in this world. RIP

Hello to Glen's family. I worked with Glen in Rochester NY as he was getting his start in television. I was able to
visit 911 memorial last year and found his name. Words cannot describe the profound sadness I still feel when I think about my dear friend Glen. It was my honor to attend his services in 2001 and a blessing to all of you, his wonderful family. Glen, you will always be my hero and in my heart until we meet again someday my friend. Hope you dont think I forgot you...Just couldnt get to write. Saw you in newsday and it just made me weak. My kids are old enough to understand and they too cried once they saw me. Did you ever think you'd touch even your friends kids lives? Still cant believe it. Not happy that we werent "invited" to the service, but wouldn't have problably gone since I prefer to be at home looking at your picture along with Johns, Petes, and Debbies on my mantle with the promised candle that hasnt burnt out yet. Glen was our favorite "Buff" who would take pictures of us at calls and then generously, give us copies for our photo albums. In return, we offered our friendship and a cup of coffee in our office. This was back when you had to DEVELOP film and have the pictures printed professionally. How times have changed, but we'll never forget Glen.

To Glens family: sorry I wasnt here on the 11th, Glen was in my thoughts and prayers as I lit a candle at the base of his flag in the healing field of flags held here each year in arizona. Glen, Another year gone bye, and still think about you everyday and talk about you always. We were able to sign a beam that has been restored that will be used in the new construction. Everyone in the family, was given a small line to write what they wanted. We all miss and love you very much. Your NYPD partners Scott, Chris and Dwayne were with us all day also. At night they had the candle ceremony for the "Lakeland Boys" which we also go to every year. We joke and talk about you all the time along with your friends which helps us all get by. Love and miss you,, Joe

To The Pettit family-
My deepest sympathies go out to your family on the loss of your Glen. I didn't know that Glen had passed until I read the touching story about his family in the paper today. I knew Glen when he was a senior in high school and often wondered what had happened to the boy I spent countless hours on the phone while he was on call at the fire dept. I'm so sorry for your loss and I thank Glen for his bravery. I will remeber all those long conversations and smile.

You are in our thoughts and prayers everyday Glen. You proudly wore my father’s badge, 3815, as does your brother Neil now. This is an honor that will be cherished by all of my family forever. My parents went to Ground Zero this morning, along with your family, to honor you and all the others that were lost six years ago. My father continues to do everything in his power to make sure you will never be forgotten. There are dollar bills circulating all over reminding people never to forget PO Glen K. Pettit and his wardrobe basically consist of tee shirts with your name and badge number on it. Glen, you are HERO and are truly missed by all.

September 11, 2007

Dearest Pettit Family,
I wonder if you will ever come to realize all the lives Glen had touched. He always stood out in all that he did, and it seemed he was always doing something... well, actually it seemed he was always involved in everything. I knew him in High School and his outward personality was what I remember about him most. He really did always have a smile on his face! What a great way to remember someone!! Blessed to have known him even if it was such a short while. Cast you cares on the Lord...I Peter 5:7

… I tried to find contact info for Tara, but couldn’t … so hopefully you will share this with her --- I was searching the web and found Glen’s memorial site. I thought I was ready to face the heartache, the pain, the unfairness of it all … but … well … I can’t imagine what your family has gone through and must still be going through … I want your family to know that I have always kept you in my prayers and I am heartbroken for your loss … I will never forget the love, friendship and safety I felt in your home … and Glen … those eyes – that smile --- the pure kindness and joy that he exuded… I will NEVER forget!!! Please give my love to ALL of your family – and let them know I care, I remember, and I will forever keep you all in my prayers!!! With all my love and sympathy, Nicole (ex nancy rogers)

... i hope it helps in some little way to know that Glen mattered to people that you all probably didn't even realize or remember --- he did, and his heroism will never be forgotten!!!

My promise has NOT been broken. The candles haven't gone out yet and they have been lit all day.

I will never let you down Glen no matter how busy life gets. Everbody grieves in thier own way, and I hang on to that damn day at headquarters so much, nobody would ever understand how much it meant to me. It was meant to be that I saw you that day, but why does it still hurt so much? The anger has not subsided one bit, it has actually gotten worse and I wonder if it will ever go away?

Hey Glen..It's 4 years today that we had to deal with the horrible day. Tara and I read names at Ground Zero ceremony. It was awesome, we each had four name to read and finally your name at the end. It felt really good to do it. It still hard everyday to try to still understand that your gone. Deep down I still dont believe it. We all wore your shirts proudly with your name and badge number big and bright so everyone could see. Your fellow NYPD Officers are the best there is. Glen,

I just wanted to let you know that although I wont be home on Saturday,(which will be awkward) I will keep my promise to you and have a candle lit. I am wondering what "funny" you are going to prank on me now that I wont be running from tree to tree on my property trying to keep them all lit. I will wait for that prank and know exactly where its coming from and laugh. Continue watching over all of us and always remember our day at headquarters. I feel so lucky to have had that day with you, which makes me think back to high school and a bunch of other memories. It still hurts so damn much though.

Keep sending me signs.

Forever in my heart.

Angela.
