Martin DeMeo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 4, 2001.
A Sting That Did Not Repel
The bumblebee caught her eye.

It was Halloween, 1982, and Martin DeMeo, dressed as a bee, was buzzing around a friend's Halloween party until he saw Joan, the future Mrs. DeMeo, who, you could say, was stung at first sight.

She had dressed as "Joan," she said, because she had come straight from work. Nonetheless, her outfit was a success. And she thought Mr. DeMeo, who friends called Marty, was "pretty funny."

She learned that the jovial bumblebee was in love with nature, and he introduced her to the joys of camping and hiking and long vacations next to the sea.

After his wife, his two children, Kristen, 16, and Nicholas, 14, and the great outdoors, what Mr. DeMeo, who was 47 and a New York City firefighter, liked most was baseball.

"He would have been very happy right now," Mrs. DeMeo said Saturday, referring to the Yankees' successful fight to get into the World Series. "I'm really hoping they do it for us this year. It would have meant a lot to Marty, and we need it really bad."

It didn't come as a surprise to me that Marty lost his life saving others. Marty made an everlasting impression on me for his selfless kindness and support he gave me during a very difficult time in my life as a very young girl. Marty had been dating my older sister for 8 years or so and the support he gave me made an everlasting impression on me. Marty was a very special person and will never be forgotten.

I will always remember my mom telling me how we visited New York months before the attack when I was little to visit my family. I'm so very sorry for your loss and my prayers will remain with your family. Me and my school let balloons go outside last September, and also were planting Iris's outside today to show honor. I still have a tag with your name that I got after 9-11. Thinking of you and your family today. When I go to the memorial site, I will look for your name.... I think the waterfalls are very appropriate to represent all the tears that have been shed for you and the other innocent victims of this cowardly act. You were one of the heros that day giving your life to save others. We will remember, rest in peace Martin!

About a year ago I helped teach a basic firefighter class. I did a lecture on the brotherhood. I instructed the students to pick one of the 343 firefighters lost at 9-11 and make them one of their family. Research them and know them. I also did this. I pick Martin Demeo. I am very much into HazMat and I saw that he was on HM1. To this day I carry a picture of him in my wallet and I see his face everyday. Martin Demeo, in my heart is a member of my family. He is my Brother.

Although we failed to stay in contact after working together for a few years back in the 80's, reading about the Halloween party, the bee costume and that most powerful sting was just the latest in a long series of bittersweet memories. I was at that party you see, and it seems like yesterday. Despite the years that had gotten between many of us, you need to know that both pre and post 9/11 any gathering of the old crew is filled with conversations about your great sense of humor, the endless practical jokes, the general positive impact you had on us and of course the infamous "Demeo" stories. The world is without a doubt a less fun and less enjoyable place without you. You are most certainly missed!

I wanted Martin's family to know that I was given his name to read at a Requiem Mass last night. We lifted all the departed souls of September 11 up to God, with everybody reading names. The church was filled to the rafters and we will never forget the incredible sacrifices of that dreadful day. Sincerely,

Marty,

Its been a year and my heart still aches. I know you are in heaven watching over us. I always admired the way you enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest, your compassion and caring for others, love for your family and your sense of humor. You have taught me a lot about living. I always knew you were special I didn't need 9-11 to realize that. You will always have a special place in my heart. How lucky I am to have you as a brother. You are a hero- my hero. I know we will meet again...till then. Louis and Aaron ask about you often. I miss you.

Love your sister

My thoughts and prayers go out to Marty's family. They don't know me, but I had the wonderful opportunity to have gone to Junior High and High School in Port Washington with Marty. I will never forget his kindness and humor. He would have given the shirt off his back if you needed it.He was always joking around and making you see the bright side of life. Even though I haven't spoken or seen him since graduation from High School, I remember those days as if it were yesterday. I cried when I heard the news on 9/11. I now know though, that after graduation, his brief time on earth was spent doing what he did best. Giving of himself for others. That was Marty's way. I was happy to hear he found someone special to share his life and that he has been able to continue his through his children. Marty, I miss you and I pray often for you and your family. Marty's caption for his picture in my 1969 Weber Junior High School yearbook says "hopes to live on cloud nine"...Marty touched the lives of so many people who will always remember him like I do. Marty....you are now on your cloud nine. Watch over us. We will always remember you and how you got there.

Till we meet again. Goodbye dear friend.

Father we entrust our brother Martin to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.

Until we meet agin....God bless.

Although I had no family connection to 9/11 - having the bracelet brings me a little bit closer to the pain. I salute the people that gave their lives to serve and help others in their time of need. May these people be remembered in our thoughts and prayers always. God bless their co-workers and families.

To the DeMeo Family,

I never had a chance to meet you, Martin, but then again there were many heroes who perished on September 11, I never had the pleasure to meet. That is truly my loss.

You were a hero on earth and because I truly believe all heroes go to Heaven when their duties have been fullfilled, you are now an Angel living with God.

You have joined God's firefighting family and I suspect you were chosen to band together with all the other Angels to help defeat this FIRE OF EVIL that exists.

God Bless you, Martin and your family, friends, and other loved ones you left behind.

Rest In Peace and find comfort knowing you and yours will remain in my thoughts and prayers, forever!

Our family received four 9-11 name tags at Christmas, one of them being Martin DeMeo's along with the Legacy article about him. These name tags hung on our Christmas tree this year, and they now hang on the lamp next to our computer where we see them every day. I want the DeMeo family to know that on each anniversary of 9-11 we will light a special candle in prayerful memory of your beloved Martin. His bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered...May God bless the DeMeo Family, and all of you who knew and loved Martin!

Our prayers to the DeMeo family. Bill had the honor of meeting Marty at a hazmat class here in Pittsburgh several years ago, and was kind enough to invite Marty and several of his collegues to our favorite hangout for some fellowship and football. What a great guy. I too wear his name on a memorial bracelet, and we are glad to have met Marty. K&B

What sparkling eyes and warm smile Marty has in the picture you have shared with us. Such eyes and smile along with his devotion as a firefighter can only be a reflection of a loving heart. We thank Martin for dedicating his life to help save, protect and care for others as a firefighter. May his courage, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. May the sorrow you feel be lightened by the warm memories of times shared with Marty. We are extremely sorry for our nations great loss of Marty. Our hearts cry deeply with you in America's loss of a hero.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
