To the family of Thomas Hetzel
When my wife and I learned that we were going to go to NYC in 2017, we knew we had to visit Thomas firehouse. We were able to talk to a couple of firefighters there. We learned that one of their grandmothers and Thomas grandmother were best friends in Germany. My wife made a quilt square for the memorial quilt in his memory. We continue to be saddened by the loss of Thomas and his friends but are buoyed by the reports of their heroism and character. We still pray for your family and for your safety and care. May God richly bless you all.

Although I never met Thomas, but heard kind things about him, I'd just like to state this. Thomas Hetzel seemed like one of the greatest and one of the most likable people you could ever meet and also one of the finest firefighters of the FDNY. He gave his lives for others in need and was (and still is) a symbol of courage and heroism. He may not be with us anymore, however we can all agree that Thomas touched so many lives and made the people he saved feel better about what happens in a fire. Thomas really knew his stuff and loved his job as a firefighter. He was a good father and overall superb role model for people who knew him closely or as just your average friendly neighbor. Rest In Peace, Thomas!

I'm So so sorry It took so many years to write this. I worked in the Emergency Room.in Franklin Square and had seen you not long before that evil day took you and so many others. I ran into your sister one day I was working in a Dr.s office and the name HETZEL was next to come in.I know you don't need me to say this , but she misses you terribly and spoke so highly of her brother. We went to grammar school together, you area hero and a friend .i took my then 1 1/2 year old daughter to your mass I stood outside with many of your brothers on the front line..it was the most BEAUTIFUL MASS I have ever been too. I also lost a few other friends and like you they were always with a smile yours just brightened so much more maybe because I worked the graveyard shift and you and the volunteers would come in at 3 am like it was mid afternoon doing what you love, helping people. You are one of a kind I'm sure god took you and asked how can one person be so happy, kind and nice and with a smile that goes on for miles. May god Bless you, your family and your daughter.

I think of you today on this fifteenth anniversary. I watch the programs dedicated to all of those affected by this tragedy and I continue to pray that we can learn new lessons from this great sacrifice of our loved ones. Your beautiful photo with your daughter is still on my desk. Somehow we still connect and I know that you are praying for all of us until we make that final connection where you are. Thank you.

As I watched and read of the dedication today, my heart overflowed with memories of a beautiful young boy (in third grade) who grew to do what he dreamed of. Thomas loved life, his family, his work and I am sure he is among us today encouraging us to live and care for others. His photo on my desk in full uniform reminds me that he gave all and we are proud to be part of his dream. Tom's teacher 3rd -8th.

To the family of Thomas J. Hetzel,
I am thinking of Thomas today and throughout the year. Last year I ran in a 9/11 10 yr.memorial 5K run sponsored by Shiloh Middle School in Hampstead MD. I won in the 50-59 category - each winner received a bracelet with one of the 9/11 victims' names. I am wearing Thomas' bracelet today. I read his profile last year and want to say to his family how sorry I am that they have had to endure his absence for these 11 years. He was an incredible man and father, so kind hearted and generous with his time and talents. I feel honored to wear his name and FDNY Ladder 13 number. Please know that his life always will be an inspiration to me and, I'm sure, for so many others. Love to you all.

Dear Tom,
Tomorrow will be 10 years since 9/11. I went to a memorial that was set up for all the fire fighters who lost there lives at 9/11 today in my town of Rochester NY. I choose your name, and the money will be sent to your family. I may not know you, or your family, but I m sad at the loss of you and everyone else on that day. I was 18 when this happend. My husband who was 19 when this happend,( was my boyfriend at the time) went down to go help work in the hosiptals. This effects him each year, due to things he saw while being down there. I just want to thank you for giving your life, so others could live. I will think about you and remember you the rest of my life. If anyone has toms familys address, could you please send it to me. ( facebook me) I would like to send a letter and a picture of the flag with his name on it that I sponsered, and that I will be getting tomorrow. thanks

Card I carried on 911 Foundation Ride
Craig Klingler
August 28, 2011
From August 18 – August 21, 2011 I participated in The America’s 911 Foundation Memorial Motorcycle Ride. The goal for this tenth year since the attack was to have 2997 participants, one to honor each of the heroes and victims of that tragic day. On the 18th, when I checked in for the ride I was handed a card with the person I would be honoring, Thomas Hetzel, 33, Elmont, NY, Firefighter, Ladder 13, NYFD, World Trade Center, Tower 1 Lobby. I didn’t know Thomas, but I do believe I know why he was in Tower 1 that morning. At 33, I also was a Firefighter/EMT/Rescue Diver in Peachtree City, GA. One of the greatest gifts we’ve been given is Free Will. We wake up every day and decide how we’re going to live our lives. Firefighters wake up every day and decide they are going to put others before themselves. I watched a movie last week titled Secondhand Lions and the line “he/she died with their boots on” was used a couple times, meaning they died performing in what they believed in. Thomas died with his boots on. As for the motorcycle ride, I expected very many angry people as we interrupted their day while 2300 motorcycles humbled through their towns and the police completely shut down roads and interstates for our route to Somerset, PA and the site of Flight 93, to the Pentagon and finally to NYC and Ground Zero. What I didn’t expect were the streets lined with American’s waving flags and cheering us on. Even those stopped on highway entrance ramps had gotten out of their cars and were waving. Fire trucks with their ladders extended and displaying the American Flag. Almost every bridge we went under was lined with people and more Fire trucks. Our countries economy is currently in the weeds, but I witness an unbelievable display of patriotism everywhere we went. Ten years is a long time, but we will never forget Thomas, and those that gave their all putting others first.

Dear Mrs.Hetzel and family. I am so sorry
about the lose of your husband, father, son and brother. I have been thinking about Thomas for 10 years because our name is also Hetzel. When I first heard his name, I got a start, but then I realized that my husband's family didn't have any Thomas in it. My daughter was at the Trade Center the week before it was hit, to this day think if she was there that morning I would not have my daughter today. I will pray for Thomas and your family that God will give you peace and a life that I am sure Thomas would want you and your family to have. May God Bless you all. Pat and Walter Hetzel

Tommy,
You will always be remembered. You were an amazing person who always had a kind word and a smile. I will never forget a day in the late 90's - I was working at a hospital on the upper east side of Manhattan and there was a fire in my building. I was being evacuted from the sixth floor and while coming down from the 6th floor, I passed you on the stairs we and exchanged a quick hello and you said you would see me outside. After seeing you, I knew wothout a doubt that everything would be ok. After the fire was put out, you came to see me and we talked for a few minutes. I remember replaying that day over and over after 9/11. I knew you since we were in kindegarten together and I have to say you are just one of those people that you could never forget. I was one of the many people who was blessed to know you Tommy. You are a true American Hero , not only to those who were lucky enough to know you and call you friend, but to all!

Missing you lots and I can safely say that my brother misses you more than anyone knows. We just went to a Fundraiser held in your honor last weekend and what a blast we had. Amanda is just such a beautiful little girl and so good. I'm so glad that she gets to play with Alex.
I think about you daily and was just remembering you giving me a hard time about finding a guy and settling down...well I haven't tied the knot BUT I did meet a fantabulous guy who shares not only the same first name as you but your initials as well!
I just wanted to let you know that I was thinking about you and wanted to say hello and finally tell you about my Tom.

To The Entire Hetzel Family:
As a neighbor, even as the years go by,we will always be proud of your son. Whenever I turn down our street, and look at the streetsign bearing his name, my son is reminded of a hero taken too soon. My son plays football with Danny on the street with all the other boys, and I am sure Tom is looking down with a big grin. I pray each day for your family, and the unbearable heartache you have endured. God be with you .

I first met Tom in 1988. I started working at a Deli in Franklin Square and I was from a "rival" town, West Hempstead. The two high schools never liked each other and I never really knew why. After working with people from Franklin Square and meeting Tom through these people, I soon realized that there was no reason behind this rivalry. Tom was a shining example of what a good person we all need to be. He was very proud to be a volunteer fireman in the FSMFD and although we lost contact after me moving upstate, I know that the day he got the call for the FDNY was a very proud day in his life. We used to take weekend trips to the Octoberfest at Hunter Mountain. Those times will always be special to me and never forgotten. My deepest condolences go out to his wife, daughter and his entire family for their loss, Tom will be deeply missed.

I went to High School with Tom and we kept in touch for a while after. One thing I wanted to share about Tom when I knew him was that he was was most proud of being a volunteer firefighter in Franklin Square. I know he must have been thrilled to become a NYC firefighter!
He shouldn't have had to die but I'd like to believe he died doing what he loved to do.
God bless Tom and his family. You are missed.

To the Family/Friends of Thomas Hetzel.
I never had the privilege of knowing or meeting this American Hero before 9-11, however today, because of 9-11, I know him a whole lot better. His bravery, courage, and love for his fellow man speaks loudly of who he was. I am proudly wearing his name on a Mercy Band and when I need to remember a Bible verse before I pray, then I can look to this bracelet and recall these words "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" Jn 15:13
Thanks Thomas for obeying the words of our Lord and Savior.
My prayers are with the Hetzel family. God Bless you all.
