Peter Vega Obituary

Always Ready to Help
Regan Grice-Vega was pregnant and was on the way to the doctor for a checkup with her husband, Peter Vega, when they spotted a car stalled on the side of the road. In it was a woman who had been rushing to the hospital to see her husband, who had had a heart attack. Mr. Vega pushed her car to a safe spot and then drove her to the hospital.

"We were late for our appointment, as usual, but that is the kind of person Peter was," Mrs. Grice-Vega said. "If he was cleaning out our gutter, he would clean the neighbor's, too."

Mr. Vega, 36, a firefighter who was a member of Ladder Company 118 in Brooklyn Heights, called his wife just before he left for the World Trade Center on Sept. 11. They had been married five years. She was a fervent Knicks fan, and he proposed to her at Madison Square Garden with a message on the big screen at half-time.

On Nov. 10, she returned to the Garden for the first time since Sept. 11, for a Knicks game against Golden State. Her father-in- law got her two seats on the floor, and she took her twin brother. "When I went with Peter, we were always up," Mrs. Grice- Vega said. "My father-in-law was on a mission to make sure I had a good night."

"It was bittersweet," she added. "It was fun ‹ but hard."

I'm extremely sorry for your loss. I understand how difficult it is to lose someone and how hard it is to move on because in all honesty you can never really completely move pass and forget something like this, no matter how many days and years that pass. There are no words I can offer that will make this loss any easier, but I hope this message sheds some sort of light. No one should be forgotten. I'll keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I miss my Father so much. And I hate that i never truly met him. Especially because i know he would have been the best Father in the world. But i know he is always with me. In my heart and in a picture hanging over my bed. Just so i know I'm safe while I sleep. Because i know he's watching and proecting me. Thank you everyone who has sent their love to me. And I just want to tell you I'm doing great. But i miss you Dad. And you will forever be in my heart.

Pete's name came to me from my fellow members of the Virginia Tech Rescue Squad. To honor the men and women of the public safety services who died in disproportionate numbers that day, we all wear silver bracelets with the name of a fallen fire, EMS or police brother or sister who made the ultimate sacrifice. I'm proud to wear Pete's name on my right arm once a year. Nice to see the notes here about what kind of person he was. He'd have fit right in on VTRS.

I shared some of my memories of Pete with a few friends and family yesterday. He certainly was a fun loving guy. There was a tradition we had in the Air Force that dictated whenever one of your fellow airmen was about to change assignments you and your buddies would capture that airman and do terrible things to them. It seems counter-intuitive, but we always thought that the worse the treatment, the stronger the bonds. I was "tar and feathered" with all the spoiled food products from the shop refrigerator, silicon grease, and paper shreddings. I guess Pete really liked me...I sure liked him!

Hermano mayor.

It's been my honor to wear the bracelet of Peter A Vega, FDNY for these past 11 years. Dear Vega Family and Friends,

Yesterday it was my honor to climb 110 floors in memory of Peter at the 2012 San Diego 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb.

Before the event, I took a little bit of time to read up about Peter and Ladder 118. By all accounts, it sounds like his positive attitude and smiles are remembered by all.

As a Firefighter out of San Diego County, what a privilege it was for me to climb on his behalf. I hope it makes you feel glad to know that, all across the country, people have not forgotten about Peter.

Thank you for sharing his story with us.

Just read Gracellen Bonilla's beautiful tribute to Petie. I'm his mom. Gracellen, hope you read this - you should know that Peter's grandmother's full name was Ana Aponte Bonilla, later married to Pedro Vega Cintron. You may have more in common with Peter if you are also of Proud Puerto Rican descent. Thank you so much for remembering my wonderful son.

I didn't know Peter as a friend, but he was a patient at the Dental office I worked for in 2001. Whenever I would call to confirm his appointments, he would pick up the phone and before I could say anything he would say "Hi Dr. Tuckers office! I know, I have an appointment tomorrow & I will be there." When he would come in for his appointment he would always joke around with myself and the other girls, and he was always so nice. I remember the day the city called for a copy of his Dental records. My boss got very upset, but he said he knew when he missed his September 2001 appointment that something was wrong. I will always remember Peter's smiling face and how he always had something nice to say to us. RIP Peter...gone, but never forgotten.

I met Peter's step father investigating a wreck on I-77 in South Carolina. He was so proud of Peter and was devistated that some one had seriously damaged Peter's car. He told me about what Peter did on 9/11. It was the first person that I knew that lost a loved one on that day. He sent me a shirt from Peter's fire house in Brookly. I recently visited the station and the memorial in the back. What a great bunch of guys. RIP brother.

Dear Reagan and Ruby,
I think of you so often with tears in my heart for your sorrow of losing the beloved husband, father, and friend that was Peter. I have believed, since that time, that Peter's spirit would keep a vigilant watch over the both of you. He was a hero long before 9/11, and he would never abandon his two beloved girls.
Today, it was a 60 Minutes expose on the failure of a 9/11 Memorial that bought Peter to my mind but, usually it's an incredibly blue sky, a head of dark curly hair, a walk on 7th Ave., or memories of him and you, Reagan.
Always, he is remembered with love.
Peace, Sandy

Happy times, Pete, Kerrie, Paul and me, Frank

Peter and Family,
Although I never had the chance to meet Peter, he has been in my thoughts. Here in the Denver area, on the anniversary of 9/11, there is a 110-floor memorial stairclimb for firefighters to remember the sacrifice that our brothers made that day. This year, the number of participating firefighters was limited to 343 and each of us climbed the stairs with a different picture of one of our fallen brothers. I climbed for Firefighter Vega. There is not a day that goes by, especially at the fire station, that we do not think about those brove men that made the ultimate sacrifice that day. Their heroism and courage is legendary. Please take comfort that Firefighter Vega and his fallen brothers will never be forgotten.

I always knew he had a calling in this life and am only thankful that I got to see him right before 9/11 and talk to him on 9/10. There will never be another Pete. We all love him so and miss him every minute of our lives. God takes those who are good and some day we will know why. I am broken hearted. Love. Mom XXXXX

Dear Maureen and Family,

Please accept my deepest sympathy. I just found out yesterday about Petie when my Mom phoned me to tell me my Aunt Elisa and cousin Dilys saw you on t.v. I was very saddened to hear this news and I'm so sorry for your loss. The last time I saw Petie was about 10 years ago and he did share with me that he wanted to be a firefighter; he was working construction at the time.

I lived in Brooklyn on 10th Avenue, around the corner from Petie and my Mom took care of him for a couple of years while he attended Holy Name of Jesus Elementary School. It was a lo-o-o-ong time ago but I believe Petie must've been about 9 or 10 years old and I was about 13 or 14. He was a quiet shy boy but he had a crush on me and would always stare at me from across the table while we ate. He would make me uncomfortable and I would put a box of cereal or anything that was on the table to obstruct his view and he would just smile and grin and peer from the side and keep on staring. We reminisced about those days when I last saw him and just laughed and laughed.

Petie was a gentleman and a gentle soul. May God keep him in His Glory and bless him, his mom Maureen, his wife Regan and his babygirl Ruby. I will always keep you in my prayers.

"A FIREFIGHTERS PRAYER"

When I am called to duty, God, whenever flames may rage, give me strength to save some life, whatever be its age.Help me embrace a little child before it is too late, or save an older person from the horror of that fate. Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout, and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out. I want to fill my calling, and to give the best in me, to guard my every neighbor and protect his property. And if, according to my fate, I am to lose my life, please bless with your protecting hand my family, friends and wife.

When the attacks happend on 9/11 the first thing I thought of was if Peter was OK. When I found out that he didn't make it out I was devastated. I couldn't believe that I knew someone who died that very day. He died saving peoples lives. That's what his job was. To save others when they're in harms way.

My mother and Peter's wife ,Regan, worked together at the Childrens School in Carol Gardens in Park Slope. Peter was such a fun loving guy. Whenever we would get together we'd always have fun. He had to of been the most generous, caring, loving man I ever met. Peter always had a smile on his face!

I know Peter is in a better place and he's looking out for all of us, just like how he did when he was alive!

Pete & I worked together for two years in Windsor Terrace Brooklyn at the local wine shop while we were in college.

In the evenings, after closing up, we would head across the street to Farrells Bar for a few cold ones before heading out on the town.

Pete was a BIG teddy bear of a guy -and always grinning!

As life would have it, we eventually went our seperate ways... but not before my wife (a wine shop customer) got to meet him.

Adrienne and I have a small tribute to Pete in the entrance hall of our Long Island home. Our suburban friends and guests often ask me about it... and I get to reminisce about an 'ol Brooklyn friend and lost times.

Though I don't know if I've ever met you, Regan (and certainly I've never met Ruby)... please know that you could count on me to be there for you if need be... an Email or phone call would send me running!

God Bless & good luck.

I worked for Pete Vega at RAF Bentwaters UK. The Pete I knew there was all that others have written. He always made us laugh, and he never seemed stoppable.

I hoped against hope that he wasn't one of the ones that was taken. I am glad he had the time God gave him to do what he always talked about. To go home to Brooklyn and become a firefighter was one of his goals. I'm glad he had a little time for a wonderful life. I am so very sad that he had to leave too soon.

December 24, 2001

Dear Peter and Family,

What do you say to someone you never met, but know they were wonderful and their memory deserves to be cherished? I am sorry? Thank you? God Bless you?

All these things and more need to be said for you, Peter and everyone who perished on September 11.

On this Christmas Eve, my thoughts are with Angels and I know you and your fellow firefighters who did not return to your loved ones are now Angels, living with God in Heaven.

I believe that is why the sky was so brillant, clear, and blue on that fateful day...It was so crystal clear to make your journey to Heaven swift and unobstructed.

I read the wonderful tribute and story that was printed in the Daily News, today, about you, by your loving wife and the reporters who kept you under their watchful eye. I smiled as I read the story about the Christmas Party on Middagh Street, home of the heroes of Engine 205/Ladder 118! That station is one of the fire stations I have "adopted" and write and send poems and my thoughts to, as often as I can.

Bittersweet was the term used for your visit, Mrs. Grice-Vega. My heart breaks for your pain and sorrow. I wish I could take the feelings of loss away from your heart.

I hope the messages of peace and love that have flooded this site brings you comfort and I pray the sun one again will shine through the dark clouds overhead.

God Bless you Peter, Regan, and baby daughter Ruby.

My grandparents and aunt lived in NYC and as I child I spent every summer in the Bronx. My grandfather, as a matter of fact, worked for the Daily News forever!

I had not returned to NYC in many years, but on the weekend of November 10, my daughter and I made the pilgrimage to pay our respects and homage to those who perished at the World Trade Center. Sadness still overwhelms me and my thoughts and prayers will continue for many more holiday seasons to come.

May Peace be yours for the New Year, Mrs. Grice-Vega, Ruby, and loved ones.

Peter must have had a very caring and wonderful heart to have given it to others everytime he was sent on a call or stop to help others. We appreciate all he did to help others. What a wonderful memory of Madison Square garden and your proposal. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
