George Merino Obituary

Cuba on His Mind

The smell of Little Neck Bay reminded George Merino of Cuba. He lived in Bayside, Queens, but the town of Matanzas, east of Havana, on the Straits of Florida, was his real home.

Mr. Merino fled his homeland in 1968, and he came to New York City with his family to begin a new life. He was a securities analyst for Fiduciary Trust in 2 World Trade Center and would have been 40 on Dec. 18.

As he approached his 40th birthday, his mind had started to turn once more toward Cuba, said Olga, his wife. "He was thinking of getting into politics," she said. "He always kept abreast of the Castro regime and wanted nothing more than a free Cuba and to go back."

Ms. Merino, too, is Cuban. She's a city-slicker from Havana. She came to America in 1970, two years after her husband came. They met at a party in New York when she was 19 and he was 20. They were married for 15 years.

Mr. Merino used to teach their daughter, Tania, 11, all about their island country, reading her Spanish news articles he found on the Internet. They also went biking together at the Bayside Marina, where the salt air reminded him of a homeland he would never see again.

He was a friend through one of my best friends, Hector Bueno.
(GU) George was a kind, very cheerful fiend, always made jokes. He did not like violence, once joining me in avoiding a fight. He talked about Cuba Libra, but never with rage, and very respectful of other opinions. George was a perfect gentlemen. He lived Flock of Seaguls, who he played in his car nonstop all the way to wildwood and back home.
To his family great hugs.

Although the years from our childhood have past so quickly, the memories will continue on for as long as the stories are remembered. May God bless you and your family always. Cuidate Hermano.

Today is the 7th anniversary of 9-11…”The Day America Changed.” Every year on this day I remember my friend George. We first met in1977 in Queens, NY at a family party. At the same party I also met his wife Olga and my first wife Rita. We enjoyed many years of friendship while dating our wives; going to each other’s weddings and seeing the birth of our first daughters, Tania (George & Olga) and Cynthia (Iggy & Rita). I will always remember George as a caring father, loving husband and his endless stories of Cuba and how he lived to be able to return someday to his homeland. George, you are another Angel in the Heavens and your examples and inspirations will never be forgotten. May God always bless you, Olga, and Tania.

I really do not know Olga and neither did I know George, but prayers have been sent forth for her and family, ever since the 9/11

attack, through my devotional family of Morning Glorythoughts.

May God bless Olga, her family, and every family affected by 9/11.

Those who did not lose anyone,

still mourn with you and will always remember.

Bless you and Tania, Olga. I am a friend of MP & have been praying for you and Tania since 911. I pray that you will come to fully experience the comfort of God, healing and that your daughter will grow to be wise and sensitive and that God will send her a wonderful man to share her life with. I pray also for you that you will find peace and solace in the days ahead.

Olga,

There are hundreds of thousands of us who will never forget George. We will pray daily for you and Tania. We shed so many tears for you, we hurt with you. No, we don't know how you feel, but we DO hurt with you - very much. Every time you hug Tania, remember - there are a lot of people praying for you to have strength to keep going.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
