Garo Voskerijian Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2001.
Everyone's Favorite Santa
Garo Voskerijian was like this, said his friend Shemavon Atamian: every year at the Holy Martyrs Armenian Day School in Bayside, Queens, where their children were enrolled, he had to play Santa Claus, by popular acclaim.

Mr. Voskerijian, 43, was tall and husky, but beyond that, he had the attitude of a Kris Kringle. He hated to see anyone unhappy, and spent untold hours trying to unravel problems for friends, loved ones and co-workers at Marsh & McLennan, where he worked in global technology services. "He was madly in love with his work and with his company," said his widow, Nayda, who was introduced to him in 1985 after Mr. Voskerijian's mother spotted her at a party. "He would create outings, whether bowling or baseball, and just lift up the morale of his whole department."

Mr. Voskerijian became famous for his memos praising someone else's accomplishments. "I felt he truly cared about his workers," said Randi Abraham, a longtime colleague, "and it's not often that you find that."

Everyone in the office also knew how he felt about his wife and his children, 12, 8 and 6. "I used to say, if I ever got married I would want to have a marriage like his," Ms. Abraham said. "He seemed so genuinely happy."

Vernon R.
Garo was a great guy. We played together on the Johnson & Higgins softball team. Truly "One of the guys" who could get along with anyone. Keeping his family in my meditations.

Garo was a friend in elementary school. If memory serves me, his parents owned a dry cleaners in Beechhurst, Queens. I did not know about his passing in 9/11 and hadn't spoken to him - probably since 5th or 6th grade. I'm so sorry to learn about his passing -even after all of these years.

Mr. Voskerijian,

I did not know you personally however I was very good friends with your son in High School and to this day always think of your family and the sacrifice you made on 9/11 for others. God bless you for all you have done and may peace remain with your loved ones.

Yesterday my wife and I visited the 9/11 Memorial site for the first time. As we were standing at the reflecting pool for the north tower I looked down and noticed the inscription for Garo H. Voskerijian. What's amazing is that I knew Garo from my years at Pace University and had no idea he had died on 9/11. While we weren't particularly close, he was a very amiable individual and we shared a number of conversations and laughs together. I am truly sorry to learn that he persihed that day and will pray for him and his family.

Garo H Voskerijian´s memory is present here with us in Norway. We lived in Washington DC from 2007 to 2010 where my wife was working with the Norwegian embassy. Recently lost a dog in cancer, we looked for a new dog from a rescue shelter. Pet Harbor Rescue and Referral in Virginia, had the one we were looking for: It should be a siberian husky, a breed we had for 30 years, and it should be calm and extremely gentle. We found Vosker. Pet Harbor´s dogs were all given names after 9-11 victims. Vosker got his name in the living memory of Garo H. Voskerijian. Shortened to Vosker.
When I read about the real Garo, I am convinced that Vosker´s name is the right for him. He has the very gentle, nice personality that Garo had. He is a loving, very sympathetic dog.
I would have appreciated very much knowing Garo, thinking I know him a little bit.
I am often thinking about the tragedy of 9-11, and Garo´s sacrifice. I am still thinking of hid family, trying to understand some of their sorrow and grief.
This summer Norway and Oslo were hit by a terrorist bombe and killing of innocent youths at a summer camp. Now we more easily understand what terrorism stands for. But love shall prevail, and democracy and human rights will grow even stronger.
Garo H. Voskerijian ´ s memory is still with us here in Norway. Our warmest thoughts for his family.
Peace with Garo´s memory.

It's been 9 years and still I think about that day. I think about Garo and the others that I knew, and wonder how their families are doing. Life certainly hasn't been the same since.

He was fantastic person with so much to offer and such a part of the New York way of life. Since I was young when I knew him it seemed to me at the time that he was a tall as the buildings that claimed his life. I was so glad that he attended my wedding and that I was able to attend his. He was always important to me and always will be. God bless Nayda and her kids. She is doing such a great job. I know Garo would be so proud of her! God Bless you Garo. See you on the other side.

Love,

Hasmig

I worked with Garo at J&H before it was bought by Marsh. He was a bright, sometimes loud, always funny and energetic person. He was always "up" for whatever was happening and was a great cheerleader for the rest of us at company events.

I didn't lose anyone I was close to on 9/11, and I was afraid to find out who the victims were for a couple of years after the fact. This is the first time I am writing about that.

I will miss Garo and all the old J&Hers who were victims of this horrible crime. May their souls find rest, and may justice be served.

It was my great honor to read Garo's name this year at Ground Zero.

My brother FF Michael Mullan sacrificed his life trying to reach others that day and I know very well (and share) the pain and anguish that Maria's family has endured over these last 4 years.

I know that Garo is a bright light shining down on all of us from heaven.

I am very thankful that I had the chance to read his name and to learn about him from this website.

I was just looking at the CNN memorial web site and I just realized that this was someone I knew at Johnson & Higgins years ago, before it was sold to Marsh. I worked in the Los Angeles Branch, but Garo came west at least once and I made several trips back to the Corporate headquarters. We were both involved in Information Technology and worked on the "BIS" project. At this moment, I feel like someone struck me in the stomach although 9/11 happened almost two years ago. Garo was a great guy to work with and must have been a great family man. My heart goes out to his family. He truly was a fine human being, the salt of the earth. I am so sorry to hear of this. Via con Dios buddy.

Garo -

You are amazing. Although it has probably been more than 10 years since I last saw you in Minneapolis (J&H), I will always remember you. You have that type of impact on the people you meet and touch. Whenever I think of 9-11-01, and it is often, I remember you. What I think of most often is your love of life, family and football. I still can remember you running a New York football pool out of Minneapolis while you were here to install upgrades on our computers. Go Jets (or was it the Patriots?). Take care Garo. God bless.

Garo,

I did not know you personally, but my family was very close with you and your family. And from what they have told me about you, you were truly an angel in disguise.

Don't worry about your family, because God is looking out for them, and so are your very close family and friends.

I hope to meet you up in Heaven one day. God Bless You!

Garo & I both worked for Johnson & Higgins. Even though we worked in different departments, we became friends. I'll never forget when he brought in a tray of baklava for me that his wife had made. It was just before the Christmas holiday and he knew how much I like it. Sometimes I think about the way we used to kid around and it makes me smile; and speaking of smiles, Garo always had one on his face. He was a wonderful person.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I worked with Garo at Johnson and Higgins on both coasts. He came to the office in Parsippany, NJ regularly to install updates to our system. When I transferred to the Los Angeles office, he made trips out there also. We always tried to make time to have lunch and catch up with each other. I will miss him, my deepest sympathies go out to his family, especially his wife and children. They have not only lost a great husband and father, we his colleagues have lost a great friend and human being.

My office was just a few feet away from Garo's last year while I worked for Marsh. He was a wonderful man who worked hard each day to try and acheive more and more. His talent and leadership was evident to all who worked with him.

I worked with Garo in Penny Kilburn's training group at Johnson & Higgins in the early 90s. He was a good man, proud of his Armenian heritage. My condolences to his family.
