Rocco Medaglia Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 6, 2001.
'A Way About Him'
The class couple way back when, a couple with two grown daughters now, Rocco and Marian Medaglia were the talk of their high school reunion this summer: "People we hadn't seen in 30 years said, 'Oh my God, you're still together!' " Marian Medaglia recalled from their home in Melville, N.Y. They shared the same bus stop in grammar school, started dating in junior high, married not long after high school graduation in Massapequa. "Any time we broke up, he'd tell me, `You know we're going to get married someday.' He had a way about him."

He was a jokester, a storyteller who did not mind embellishing details. It was only natural that the Army chose him as a recruiter in the 1970's: "He could charm the pants off anybody, even make you want to join the Army," said his wife. Around Melville, she was known as Mrs. Rocco, his daughters as Rocco's kids. When ordering takeout or dropping clothes at the dry cleaner, the family never used their last name: "Rocco" was enough.

Rocco Medaglia, 49, was a construction supervisor for G.M.P. Inc. and last week was putting the finishing touches on a renovation for Cantor Fitzgerald. The project kept him so busy over the summer that he missed the annual family vacation in Moodus, Conn., but he kept up with the weeding and transplanting in his beloved perennial gardens. And he always tended the barbecue.

It is hard to believe that 20 years has gone by you were a true friend you’re at peace in heaven with your wife. Everything happens for a reason sometimes I don’t believe that there was no reason to take you from this earth at such a young age. Hope to see you again someday in heaven may Jesus and all the saints watch over your family.

I still can't believe what happened that day, even after all these years :-( I was so grateful that Willie wasn't there that morning because they had an emergency stop to make first on the way only to find out that you were in the building. Not a day goes buy that I don't think about you and miss you and Marian too. I know you are both looking down on the girls and your grandchildren, family and friends and smiling. We miss you so very much, both Nicole (hehe) and I do. Till we see each other again one day, hold down the fort! So grateful to have you and your family in our lives for so long. RIP Rocco!!

I stumbled upon this guest book while searching for a good friend of mine with whom I lost contact with years ago, Luis Sierra Jr. I googled Louie's name and stumbled upon this dedication to Rocco. I had the pleasure of serving with Rocco in the 563rd MP Co., Ft. Hamilton, NY, around 1975-76. We worked together on an undercover mission with CID at Ft. Dix, NJ. Rocco was a great partner and friend. He covered my back. I heard that he went into Army recruiting. I'll never forget his infectious laugh. I don't know the circumstances surrounding his death. My deepest condolences go out to his family. God bless you all. Rest in peace Rocco.

To everyone that signs Dad's guest book,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I truly love the fact that my Dad meant so much to you that you honor him yearly. I look forward to reading your entries. My Mother was always touched by all the sentiment as well. I know that my Father and Mother are looking down on all of us and smiling and are proud of all the people that loved them. May God keep you and your families safe. Until next year, thank you again, Liz Medaglia-Cordes

Well my Daddy, here I am writing to you again 11 years later. My heart is still broken. Now I have lost Mommy as well. The only hope that I have is that the two of you are together again. There has to be something good about this right? You are missed more each day. I wish you could have met your grandchildren. I think that my Rocco looks just like you. You would have gotten so much joy out of all three. Madison would have won your heart hands down and Robert is just as witty as you were. We all talk about you all the time. Nothing will ever make it better, but memories of you and Mommy are what keep me going. I hope you are proud of me. I am trying Dad. I love you more than I can say. Until we see one another again....I love you. Give Mommy hugs and kisses from me. XOXOXOX

Hi my name is Aretha McDonald and I was a bartender when i met rocco and mike at the lenox lounge. They would come inside after work while during construction in harlem. Rocco was a joyous and funny person who always made me and the rest of the bar patrons laugh. Rocco and mike was always together like two peas in a pod. When i heard the news my heart drop because i new that rocco was working in the doomed tower and i prayed that he wasn't there, unfortunately mike confirmed the words i didn't wanna believe that rocco was gone. Every year since then my heart aches for his family and friends that knew him and loved him. Rocco was the best of everything. He was a beautiful human being and i was blessed to have known him. You are truly an angel and i know although you have left this earth, your spirit still shine through all of us who knew and loved you. God bless and may peace be with you always.

Rocco -
So many thoughts, so many memories, where do I start! I’m just proud to say we shared some of the best times and fondest memories two kids could ever have growing up with one another. Often times I find there is always something that has a way of bringing back those great memories that seem as fresh in my mind as though it happened only yesterday, always with a smile brought upon my face.
I read somewhere that a person is truly gone when forgotten. Well Rocco you do live on and in many of us. The love from your family and friends, you touched so many lives to never be forgotten! So until we meet again someday, you are forever in my thoughts and prayers.

It will be six years tomorrow that I lost my best friend, husband and father of our daughters. I finally feel able to share what this wonderful man meant to me though I fear my words cannot express what is in my heart. Let me say nobody has ever been able to make me laugh harder, frustrate me more or feel love the way this man did. I lived much of my life through him as his zest for life was so great. He never feared exploring new opportunities, meeting new people and embracing them and taking risks. I admired him and loved him since we first met as teenagers. Today I look at our three grandchildren and imagine the joy and pride he would be feeling.

I miss you more today my love than I did six years ago. Please know I feel your presence and pray you will be there to greet me when we meet again.

Forever in my heart,

Marian

In two days it will be six years that you have been gone. It does'nt seem to be getting any easier though. I still miss you so much that it hurts. I wish you could have met the kids, but I am sure you see them just fine from where you are. Sometimes they do things that make me think you would have laughed so hard at that! It has taken me sometime to express my thoughts on this website about a very special human being who was my friend. I still have a difficult time excepting the tragic events of 9/11 and the effect it's had on me personally. I am lucky to have know this man whose quick wit and humor was his trademark. Words can not discribe how much I missed my friend, but I'm sure we all feel the same way about this great man. That is why we pay our respect with our chosen words. Although you are truly missed here on earth, heaven is a better place since you arrived. So take care of yourself Rocco and I will see you on the other side. Not anytime soon I hope :) My love to Marian and the girls including the newest addtion "Madison".

Dear Mary Ellen,

You are my "always" friend. I know how badly you hurt and miss your brother Rocco. I never had the luxury of meeting this wonderful man. I do know him through you. I know that he was the kind of man that entered a room and lit it up. I know he was the kind of man that was there for anyone that needed him. I know that he was a fantastic Dad and a wonderful husband. I know he was a brother that most wish they had. I was lucky enough to know you Mare, which in turn allowed me to know Rocco. I just celebrated Memorial Day with my family. I talked about you and Rocco on this day. We may be many miles apart, but you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers always.

Take Care Of YOU My Friend.

Love You,

I was listening as the names were read off, and Rocco's name was called and it jumped out at me and almost knocked me down. There was only one "Rocco" in this world. We were Army Recruiters together in the mid 1970's at Ft. Hamilton. The times we had together were some of the best in my life. He was always so funny and a complete joy to be around. He was a outstanding solider, NCO and a great motivator. We had so many great times, at work and off duty. Marion and him were such a great couple and a joy to be around. I know that with his military training, expirence, moral and physical courage he was a pillar of strength, guideance and leadership to all of the other souls right to the end. He was a great American, husband and father and I feel honored to have known him and family if only for a short period of our lives. May he rest in peace and best wishes to Marion and their family in the future.

To The Medaglia Family,

For the past few months I have been wearing a sliver Mercy Band with Rocco's name on it. I never knew who he was but by reading the tribute of him, I can tell he was an extremely special person to your family. My family was also affected that tragic day too, and I just want to tell you for as long as I live I will wear this bracelet in Rocco's name, may he rest in heavenly peace.

I could not believe it, I said..it cant be him..He is big and strong. But it was. My deepest heartfelt condolences to your family. God bless them and you. You still pop into my head everytime I look around the office. You may not have been in this office long, but you left an impression. God bless you and your family always.

Rocco,

I can't believe it's been a year already, not a day goes by that we don't think of you and how you always made us laugh. On the anniversary I was with my family at ground zero for my cousin Mark who was a police officer also killed that day and as we walked down the ramp into the pit I thought of you too. I left a rose for you also and as I was on my way up the ramp I hoped I would hear your name and I did (they even said it correctly), I said a prayer for you and your family. Artie, Willie and I think of you all the time and the good times we had. You will always be loved and missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are always with Marion and the girls.

Our condolences and prayers go out to your family. My grandparents,

Santa & Giovanni Medaglia came from Calabria, Italy to Haverhill, Massachusetts via New York in 1906. I feel like I've lost a family member.

My employer, Keystone Mercy Health Plan, held a beautiful service on September 11, 2002 in which a card was given to me with Rocco's name on it identifying him as a soul lost on that fateful day. He is now forever remembered by me. God Bless.

Dear Rocco,

Not a day goes by without me being reminded in some way of you.

You have brought a smile to my face without even being here, as I am reminded of some little memory. You made me laugh when you were with us and still make me laugh when I think of those times. Thank you for being a part of my life.

Dearest Dad,

I miss you more with every passing day. I miss your laughter, humor and love. I miss your advice and your knowledge. There is still so much that I want to ask you, tell you and hear from you. You are the best father I could have ever asked for.

God truly blessed me when he selected you to be my Father.

We know that you are with us in our hearts and minds but nothing will ever fill the void that is left now that you are gone.

Until the glorious day that we meet in Heaven, where I know you will be waiting for us with open arms, I will pray for your safety and happiness.

I LOVE YOU today, tomorrow and always.

Love,

Liz
