I recently watched documentary today and was taken back when your fellow officers were speaking of you with such admiration in your unit and the accounts of that horrific day and your bravery. The dog that you welcomed into the unit - Mid- Knight was a special heartwarming. You didn't know me but I knew your mother Joanie and your fatherScotty and remember the day the got married- I was a youngster and only fond memories, I can understand that you would be a special man having parents like yours. . I have just learned of your Mother's passing and was saddened know that I would never get to see her again. Just as I wasn't able to reconnect with your family. I keep you and your Family in prayer. With love, Annie

This is my first visit to your site. However, your name and sacrifice has been with me for the last 15 years. I worked with your younger brother in customer service at Ikea in 2001 and I remember as if it were yesterday when he came back to work. There were no words. Every year I think of you and your family, and vividly recall seeing your brothers face.He was just a kid. You were so young but brave and determined to help. Every year I share with my students your name and sacrifice for others. Reading these previous posts shows what a true hero you are.I hope all is well with your family and know that you have touched so many lives in so many years. It was an honor to be in close proximity to a national hero. Rest easy and thank you for the ultimate sacrifice.

I am visiting NYC for the first time in a few days and I am going to visit the memorial and pay my respects to Walter and indeed to everyone who lost their lives that day. I never knew Walter, I work as a nurse with his cousin Diane Weaver back in Scotland where his family originated, and I was touched by his story and heroism, what a brave man.
RIP Walter.

I didn,t know Walter but I knew of him through his father, Bill. Bill was the witness at our NY wedding when we came over in 96 from the UK to get married. Paul and I kept in touch with Bill for a few years after our wedding and we also knew that Walter had been tragically taken during 9/11. However, over the years, we lost touch with Bill. The Christmas cards stopped arriving and we feared something had happened to him. Last week, I was telling somebody at work my beautiful wedding story and how we met Bill through this lovely event and they asked me if we were still in touch, I said sadly, No. The conversation lead me to look online to see if I could find anything and I came across this article.
Paul and I would like to pass on our condolences to the Weaver family not only for Walter but of course, for Bill. Very sad to hear that he passed away in 2010 and we had no idea.
I would like to know of any memorial site that I could visit for Bill next time we are in NY to pay our respects. He was such a sweet man to us.

Just returned from seeing the WTC Memorial for the first time. Walter's name was one of the first I looked at and one that stuck with me because it is the same last name of my best friend who died years ago, unrelated to the WTC. It just made me feel like maybe she was there watching over me, along with all the other angels from 9-11. Years and years will pass, but someone new will come along and read these names and be touched, some like me will even be moved to look them up. Thank you Walter for your sacrifice. May you be in peace now and all those who knew you personally feel some peace as well, and know that people simply won't forget this day and be forever grateful for those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

People on here will probably laugh at me but.. I was visiting New York City when I was presenting my Senior Seminar Project. I am an aspiring police officer and we ended up going to the police museum, which I wanted to do very badly. When we were there I noticed Walter stuck out more than anybody because of one quote. Walter was the most helpful person, when you need someone, pray to Walter. At that moment I have been praying to Walter ever since to help guide me in the right path to becoming a police officer. His name has always stuck out and I even found his name on the twin tower memorial. Don't ask how or why but in all honesty, I feel as though Walter will look over and help me.

Dear Weaver Family,
Your brother was a lot like mine. My brother is turning 30 this year. He’s in NYPD and lives in Centereach. Recently he got shot. My whole world turned upside down because I thought that could never happen, but it did. Then I read your brother’s story and saw how close it was to mine and realized how lucky my family and I are. I feel so sorry you had to loose your brother but he did the ultimate act of kindness! I really wanted to write to you and I’m so glad I did! I really care about you and your family. I’m in 8th grade and everyday I remind my brother he’s my hero but there is now a 2nd hero. Your brother and mine! Your brother and my brother are my heroes!
Sincerely,
Adina

Dear Weaver family,
I send my condolences to you today, over you son Walter. At the 10th anniversery of 9/11, I, along with every other American, take the time to remember the attacks. I, only 3 years old at the time, can only imagine 9/11 through stories like Walter's. I read about Walter's stoy on Newsday.com, and it really moved me. It seems to be that you guys were extremly close with Walter. It seems that he was a great man, and that the world lost someone special that day. I especially like that Bill, untill he passed away, walked around Ground Zero every day. I hope that Brain, along with the rest of the family, will learn that the world is not such a bad place. Also, I hope that you guys will take the terible tragedy, and make the best of it, like teaching Americans about 9/11, so that Walter, and all the other victims, will never be forgotten. All of America is with you.

I only knew Walter through his father Bill. I knew Bill through my mum Elaine who is a Daughter of Scotia. I would see Bill at Clan MacDuff's Annual Burns Suppers, and the Scottish Games. After that tragic day Bill always was wearing a tee-shirt with his son's face proudly displayed on his chest. I made sure I sought him out at any Scottish event so I could give him an extra BIG HUG, I knew he carried that pain everyday. The last time I saw Bill was in a very crowded Penn Station wearing a British Police Bobby hat. If it hadn't been for the hat I would never have had a chance to give him that hug...which sadly I discovered was our last. A year later when I was looking for him at the Games I was informed he had passed. I was sad I didn't have a chance to pay my respects in person...and then a sense of calm overtook me. He has been reunited with his son Walter. I listen for Walter's name every year - along with other names - and visit the Suffolk Memorial to see his name. We will never forget all those who were stolen that day. Rest well Walter. To his family, you remain in my thoughts. BTW my father's name is Walter...a retired NYPD.

I was Walter's Wood Shop Teacher at Hicksville High. Walter was one of my favorite students,he was always a happy kid.He took pride in his projects and took time to help others and help me when I needed a hand. It was no surprise to me when I heard how Walter died,... a hero, I could tell back then he was special. His name is on my Wall of Fame in my classroom. I tell my students about Walter and they are amazed , I often say this is where Hero's Learned "show respect to this class" and they do, they get it.

New York Police Department Officer Walter E. Weaver of the elite Emergency Services Unit was the son of our dear friend Bill Weaver and lived in Levittown and Centereach, Long Island, NY. Wally was last seen on the 6th floor in the north tower, attempting to free passengers trapped in an elevator. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the NYPD's highest honor. His remains were never found. Bill Weaver was from Scotland and he proudly wore a blue NYD cap, a t-shirt with Wally’s photo on it and his kilt all around NYC. At first, his father couldn't bring himself to go to the site where his son had perished. At the urging of his other son Brian, he finally did. Bill took the LIRR to Manhattan, then walked around the site's perimeter, about five miles long. He did it again the next day, then the day after that. The daily pilgrimage continued for the next eight years until he died on Jan. 28, 2010. The street where Wally lived was renamed "P.O. Walter Weaver Way" at a windy ceremony attended by many members of the Scottish American community. Bill Weaver stayed at our home in Manhattan and met my son Adam. The two stayed up late one night talking and I could not but think how much Bill enjoyed talking with a 30 year old again and how much Adam was in awe of this father who’s son had died a hero helping to save others. One day in 2005 I ran into Bill on the streets of Glasgow, Scotland where we were both visiting. He was still wearing that cap.

Hi Wally
Merry Christmas 2003 in Heaven!
Dad and I went to the 43 precenct the other day to see the guys and say hello.
They, like all of us, miss you and Jerome and Vinny everyday.
Your guns are now safe and sound with Brian. It was work, but we did it!
Your 'snubby' is now on display at the National Firearms Museum in DC for all the world to see!
The NRA has a special place for you, Wally. They really love you.
And yesterday, Brian gave me the best gift I have ever received - your first issued NYPD duty Mod. 10 Smith with the wooden grips.
Don't worry. I will take care of it for you until we all meet again (and then just try and get it away from me)!
Don't worry about all the holster wear on the barrel. I like it that way.
Tomorrow is brother Michael's brithday party - 20 - and learning to be a good Marine. We know you will be there with us.
We love you Wally and miss you more each and every day.

WALTER:
ITS NOT EVERYDAY THAT YOU RUN INTO A HERO. PEOPLE USE THAT TERM WITH NO REAL MEANING IS TODAYS WORLD. WE ARE SO LUCKY TO KNOW A HERO LIKE YOU. YOU RISKED EVERYTHING THAT YOU HAD TO SAVE OTHERS LIVES. I HAVE TO SAY THAT IT TAKES A VERY UNSELFISH PERSON TO DO THAT. I WENT TO SCHOOL WITH YOUR BROTHER MICHAEL AT FORK LANE AND WE HAD ALOT OF FUN TIMES ESPECAILLY WHEN WE USED TO GO TO THE ROLLER SKATING RINK WITH YOU DAD AND MICHAEL FOR THE SCHOOL EVENTS THEY HELD THERE. ITS SO FUNNY HOW YOU RUN INTO PEOPLE THAT YOU KNEW YEARS AFTER. WHEN MY DAD(GREG BILELLO) STARTED TO GO TO ANDY'S BOW SHOP HE TOLD ME ABOUT YOU AND THEN REMEMBER WHO YOU WERE. I TOLD MY DAD THAT MICHAEL ALWAYS USED TO TALK ABOUT HIM AND HOW MUCH FUN HE WAS AND HOW HE WANTED TO BE LIKE HIM WHEN HE GREW UP. MY DAD TOLD ME HOW MUCH FUN YOU GUYS HAD A THE BOW SHOP AND HOW MUCH YOU AND ANDY LIKED MY MOM'S HOME MADE APPLE PIES. AND DONT EVER THINK THAT THEY FORGOT YOU AT THE BOW SHOP BECASUE THERE IS A WHOLE WALL WITH YOUR PICTURES AND ALL DIFFERENT TRIBUTES TO YOU. MY BROTHER ALSO LOOKED UP TO YOU WENT HE STARTED TO GO TO THE SHOP AND HOW KOOL YOU WERE WHEN YOU TAUGHT HIM ALONG WITH MY DAD HOW TO USE A BOW. HE TALKED ABOUT YOU EVERYNIGHT THAT HE CAME HOME. I TOLD MY DAD THE FIRST DEER HE GETS THIS YEAR IS TO BE DEDICATED FOR YOU....LAST YEAR HE HAD BAD LUCK. I ALWASY WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT HICKSVILLE LOOKS TO YOU AS THEIR HERO FOREVER. WE HAD MANY CEROMONIES FOR YOU AT THE SCHOOL. LAST YEAR AND THIS YEAR ON SEPT 11TH I WORE YOUR ICTURE ON MY SHIRT IN HONOR OF YOU. I MY MIND YOU ARE ALWAYS MY HERO. SOMEONE THAT DIED DOING SOMETHING THEY LOVE AND GAVE UP EVERYTHING FOR OTHER PEOPLE. WE MISS YOU VERY MUCH AND YOU THOUGHTS AND PRAYS ARE WITH ME ALWAYS. YOU HAVE A VERY SPECAIL PLACE IN MY HEART...NEVER FORGET....RIP WALLY...WE LOVE AND MISS YOU VERY MUCH.

It has taken me 2 years to be able to add to this tribute page. All I can remember is being at Walter and Shannon's new house on 9/9/01, making home improvment plans with Walter, and my daughter bringing Scotty a cold drink while he worked in their yard. I think of that day..a gorgeous sunny day..just like today, and all the excitement...happiness, and Walter's famous smile and positive attitude toward all the work ahead. There Walter stood, holding his new puppy "Tucker", and saying "Aren't you gonna stay for dinner" (while the house is in chaos), and "we're neighbors now you know!"
Two days later...Walter did what I would have expected him to do..unselfishly risk himself, doing the job he loved, to help other people.
Walter there isn't a day that goes by that we don't all think of you. Kristen and Michael are getting so big...Michael still can't talk about you being gone, Kristen has a tribute to you on our wall, photo's of you and Shannon at her birthday party, funny notes you sent her..and 9-11 tribute pictures.
You gave us all so much...even a box of working gloves! Everytime we use them, we think of you.
We hold every moment we spent at the Faulkner's or upstate at my mom and dad's house with you and Scotty as precious memories of a time gone by.
We hold onto Shannon and the Faulkners, and their love and strength because it reminds us of you and all the time you spent with all of us.
The word "HERO" is used so casually these days..but our family considers itself very fortunate...because we actually new and loved a real hero, you never showed up at our house for dinner without stopping to buy a layer cake for dessert on the way..and you would NEVER not help someone in need.
After 2 years, it still hurts.
Love and miss you,
Always,
Carole

Since you and my brother John were chosen to go to heaven on Sept. 11, 2001, your brother Brian and I have gotten to be friends.
However, Brian has been seeing NYPD ESU Truck 2 in Manhattan with John's name on it and I have been seeing NYPD ESU Truck 3 in the Bronx with your name on it.
The both of you must be giving us the business from up above.
This has been hard enough without you two ESU pranksters playing jokes on us down here.

Wally, it's been more than a year...and till this day..i still can't put my thoughts into words..having the pleasure of working with you...responding to some of our calls...there is oneday that my partner and i will never forget...two weeks prior to Sept. 11, the day that my partner got into a little finder binder with the RMP..my parnter hit a pole by mistake....we went looking for you to help us..and when we found you ..you had just bought yourself some lunch..we told you what happend..and you said to us..dont' worry i'll fix it..you put your lunch down in the truck..and came over with a hammer , sand paper and spray paint..and made our RMP..look like new..as though it was never in a accident..with no regrets or regards to getting in trouble..you helped us from getting a rip..just shows to prove that prior to Sept. 11...you were already our HERO!!
Our only regret was that we still owe you..we told you that we will buy you breakfast..lunch..for helping us..and you said to us,"don't worry about it...you guys see me all the time"...that was the last time we saw you!
We want to thank you for all the kindness you showed us that day and every other day...and to tell you it was a pleasure working with you...and i know that even if we tried you buy you breakfast or lunch...you would not had accepted it...that was just the kind of guy you were, always willing to lend a hand.
Till we see you again!! God Bless

I am originally from New York. Yesterday at the University of the Incarnate Word where I work, we had all the individual names in a pail and we were to draw a name, and a memorial pin, and wear both for the day and pray for that person. I picked Walter's name and prayed for him and his family all day.
I was honored to do so, and will continue to do so, as one born in Mineola, NY and with a nephew as a lieutenant on the NY Police Force.
God bless you all.

Don't you like the new birds Brian bought for me! We feel like you and Shannon now with all the animals we have!
Your Dad, Brian, & Michael are amazing. They have been so strong. It's such an honor to have the Weaver name!

I knew Walter when I was a litle girl. I lived right next door to him for many years. Although I did not grow up to know him well I have heard so many great things he accomplished. My Uncle who worked with him told me and my sister so many good things. I would just like to say Walter you are a HERO to me and I will never ever forget you or you family. You all are in my heart and prayers forever.

Wally, You were my best friend. Nobody could ask for a better person. From the time you took care of Carla by dropping of the radio at my house in case she went into labor while I had to leave town for a family emergency to when you just came to see how I was making out in STS. You were there for the birth of my kids who will be better people because of your influence on me. You were the consumate E-MAN, not a situation you would ever shy away from. In closing Wally was the kind of person you would want your son to emulate &/or your daughter to marry. Never forget Wally, the men & women of the NYPD or any of the other innocent victims just trying to make a living when these cowards struck. Love Ray,Carla,Nicole, Kevin & Chucky Flood

Wally, I still have a hard time believing that any of this really happened. Your actions on September 11, 2001 exemplify your dedication, and your heroism. I worked with you more as your real-estate agent then we did as e-men, but I wish it had been the other way around. It would have been an honor to work side by side with you in any situation. We often think of you and Shannon, and you will always be in our thoughts and our prayers
