Mitchel Wallace Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Oct. 10, 2001 to Mar. 10, 2014.
'I Have to Help'

On Sept. 11, Mitchel Wallace, a court officer in State Supreme Court, was arriving for work at 111 Center Street when he saw a plane hit the World Trade Center. He ran to help.

It was a typical reaction for Mr. Wallace, 34. He had saved lives before.

Trained as an emergency medical technician, Mr. Wallace had saved his fiancée, Noreen McDonough, three years ago by dragging her to the hospital after he noticed her exhibiting symptoms of a stroke.

Then, last year, Mr. Wallace was on his way home on the Long Island Rail Road when a man on the train went into cardiac arrest. Mr. Wallace performed C.P.R. for more than 25 minutes, and the man survived. Mr. Wallace received an award for heroism from Judith S. Kaye, New York's chief judge, and moved from family court to the Supreme Court.

On that morning in September, when Mr. Wallace arrived at the World Trade Center, he called Ms. McDonough to tell her that there had been a terrible accident. She told him that it was not an accident but a terrorist attack and told him to get away.

He replied: "I can't. There are bodies everywhere. I have to help."

After Mr. Wallace disappeared, Judge Kaye went over to the apartment of Ms. McDonough and Mr. Wallace with a large bag of jelly beans and sat down with her. She said, "We are going to sit here and eat jelly beans until he comes home."

Dearest Mitch, Happy 51st birthday my darling Mitch--hard to believe you were 34 when I last said that to you in person. You were taken from us way too soon. I will spend today with Michele, Brian, and Logan remembering you. You would be proud of your nephew Logan who is now 23, graduated college and working/living in the city and Lindsay who is away at college in her second year. We always talk about you and remember funny and sometimes not so funny things about you and our times with you. When you feel the wind today it will be the balloons so many of us send up to you on your birthday and 9/11. You are forever in my thoughts and heart--my wonderful memories of you as a warm ,loving and caring son is always with me. All my love and kisses, Mom XOXO

We all attended the 9/11 ceremony at the court house---your sister spoke, Linds did not read the names this year because of school just starting that week, but your name was read by the person reading the names with W, your nephew is away at college--can you believe that--but, he did attend a 9/11 ceremony on campus. You are always in our hearts and thoughts. Not a day goes by that I do not think of you---the memories put a smile on my face. Your 47th birthday is tomorrow, March 11th--so hard to believe the number 47!!! TO EVERYONE WHO HAS WRITTEN IN MITCH'S BOOK---We want to thank you for all the kind, touching notes from those we know and those we do not know..Each and every one is special and we cherish them-----and I know that Mitch does, also. It has been a very emotional week---but, it is something we feel that for one day a year we all come together---we smile at others, we nod, we just look at one another and the eyes say it --"yes today is 9/11---we all share a common bond for this day---and always will". Again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you all and G-d Bless you all and G-d Bless the U.S.A. With Love Mitch's Mom,---Rita

Dearest Mitch----today is 10 years since that awful Tuesday morning when we lost you--much, much too soon. Friday we had a ceremony at the Court House with everyone there honoring you, Harry and Tommy. The lady you bandaged in the street before you went into the Towers was there remembering how kind and wonderful you were to her. Today the bells will toll again, the names will be read, the flags will be flying---we will all be at the site of the new Memorial. I know you will be looking down at all of us--me, dad, Michele, Brian, Logan, Lindsay and the rest of the family at the site. You will be in the hearts and thoughts of all of the family and friends. I know you will be very proud when your 13 year old niece, Lindsay, reads your name, again, today------just as I know you were proud when Michele and Logan read it previously. When you feel the wind blowing, it will be the balloons we all send up to you. As always, my darling Mitch, you will be in my heart today. I love you and miss you. R.I.P. I didnt know you or any of your family for that matter. However I have joined a page on Facebook called "Remember Me" and they assigned me a name to remember on 9/11 by posting the name of the person on my wall. Well I wanted to know a little bit about Mr. Wallace and when I typed his name into google and read his obituary, it moved me. Mr. Wallace sounded like a great person a brave person. He was safly out of the building when the plane hit the building but he couldnt just sit around and watch the people die he didint everything in his power to save as many people he could. The lord buts people on this planet for a reason and Mr. Wallance was put here to be a hero. God Bless your family and all the victims families of 9/11!

Rita, we became friends at work over 10 years ago, never dreaming what would be the reason to make that friendship become so close and everlasting. I remember just a few weeks before 9/11 I was going to be at Donovan's the same night you were there and meet Mitch, Noreen, Michelle, Brian, Logan and Lindsay for the first time and then could not make it. I never did meet Mitch, yet 10 years later it's as if I know him through you. We shared the grief together, the courts ceremonies and events, and most recently the most joyous of occasions with your family and grandchildren. I know Mitch was with you during every one of those moments and just as we think of him as a hero..... he too is so proud of you and his family. Each day passes, each year passes and my thoughts and prayers are always with you.

Dear Mitchel -
I did not know you. I'm only a high schooler from California that was 5 on September 11, 2011. I watched a 9/11 special tonight so I decided to do some research about real individuals who were effected and get to hear the stories. But reading these blessings and hearing your story left me speechless and in tears. You were apparently an amazing person and I feel lucky to have been able to randomly stumble across a person that is a complete stranger but will leave a great impact on my life. I wish your family all the best. Thank you, Mitchel.
Love, Stella.

THE FAMILY OF MITCHEL WALLACE WANTS TO THANK EVERYONE WHO HAS WRITTEN IN MITCH'S GUEST BOOK. I AM NOTIFIED WHEN THERE IS A NEW ENTRY, AND IT BRINGS ME COMFORT TO KNOW THAT OTHER'S ARE THINKING OF MITCH. TIME DOES HEAL AND LIFE DOES GO ON----AND MITCH WOULD WANT THAT FOR ALL OF US----BUT TO LOSE A CHILD IS DIFFICULT. HE IS ALWAYS WITH ME. HE WAS THOUGHTFUL AND CARING---AND THAT IS WHY HE RAN TO HELP THAT MORNING ON HIS WAY TO WORK. DON'T KNOW IF MANY OF YOU KNOW-----MITCH TOOK THE TEST TO BECOME A SERGEANT A FEW MONTHS BEFORE 9/11. HE NEVER KNEW IT (I LIKE TO THINK THAT HE DOES KNNOW IT) AND HE PASSED THE TEST. ON APRIL 23, 2003 THEY HAD A CEREMONY AND WE RECEIVED A PLACK STATING THAT SENIOR COURT OFFICER MITCHEL S. WALLACE WAS PROMOTED POSTHUMOUSLY TO SERGEANT WALLACE. IT WAS A BITTER-SWEET MOMENT FOR US! IN 2006 3 STREETS IN LOWER MANHATTAN WERE NAMED FOR THE 3 COURT OFFIERS LOST ON 9/11. THERE WAS A HUGE CEREMONY AS THEY UNVEILED THE NEW SIGNS BELOW THE OLD STREET SIGNS. THE CORNER OF LAFAYETTE AND WHITE STREET IS ALSO KNOWN AS COURT OFFICER MITCHEL S. WALLACE CORNER. NO REMAINS, AS OF YET, WERE FOUND. IT IS THE ONE MORE PIECE TO THE PUZZLE THAT I WAIT FOR. 6 MONTHS AFTER 9/11 A METAL PART OF MITCH'S GUN WITH THE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER WAS FOUND. I NOW HAVE THAT. ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO A CHARRED AND SLIGHTLY BENT GOLD RING WITH THE INITIALS MW WAS FOUND. YES, IT IS MITCH'S RING. I NOW HAVE THAT. IT IS DISPLAYED IN A GLASS BOX IN MY LIVING ROOM. ONE MORE THING TO LEAVE YOU ALL WITH--------THE FAMILY HAS BEEN SENDING BALLOONS UP TO MITCH EVERY YEAR FOR HIS BIRTHDAY, MARCH 11TH AND ON 9/11. IF ANYONE WANTS TO JOIN OUR BALLOON DAYS, THANK YOU. WITH LOVE, PEACE AND THANKS, MITCH'S MOM, RITA

Hi Mitch:

I am so lucky I saw you a month before
9/11 at Brians Party I was so so
proud of you when you showed me the
medal that you received. I am not going
to call you a hero because you did
what you did that day because you were
Mitch Wallace. What do you say to a
loved one but may you and your other
law enforcement brothers and sisters
who were lost for no reason stand watch
over all of us. Til the day we meet
again just know my love for you will

Dearest Mitch-----So hard to believe tomorrow will be 8 years since that day. I miss you so much---you are always in my heart and thoughts. The bells will again ring tomorrow, the names will again be read tomorrow, and all the ceremonies will take place for the 8th year----and all the heroes will be remembered by all. You, my dearest son, will be remembered and loved by all your family and friends. When you feel the movement in the air, you will know it is all the balloons coming YOUR WAY.
