Jasper Baxter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2001.
A Needy-People Person
Jasper Baxter was a needy-people person. He once made it his Saturday-morning routine to deliver meals from a food bank to hungry homes in Philadelphia, where he lived with his wife, Lillian. When he heard of a mortgage lender who was charging an old woman monthly payments that exceeded her Social Security income, he took his outrage all the way to the Pennsylvania legislature, where there was enough interest in the matter to make the company back down, said a brother, Dennis Baxter.

Jasper Baxter, 45, ran twice for state representative and lost both times. But he had a job that still allowed him to lend a helping hand. He was a consultant at Lee Hecht Harrison, a career services company at which he helped people who had lost jobs find work or start their own businesses.

On Sept. 11, he was conducting a two-day seminar on the 93rd floor of 2 World Trade Center.

"He was really good at getting people excited and motivated to get out there and find employment," said Elva Bankins, senior vice president and general manager of the company's Philadelphia office, where she said condolence cards and calls have poured in from grateful clients.

The youngest of seven children, Mr. Baxter grew up as the baby who everybody felt should be told what to do, his brother said. That meant he learned fairly early in life how to stand his ground, his brother said. "We all offered him advice," he said. "He learned how to defend his position."

I remember working with Jasper in Boston. He was such a genuinely nice person. He always seemed to be happy when I saw him. I provided support for his team. The people that worked with him really enjoyed working with him. I was so sad when I heard about what happened. Even after all this time I still think about him and reflect on what a good person he was. He touched the hearts of many people. Even more people than people realize.

I miss him terribly. I have never told my 9/11 story in a setting like this; I tried to reach out to the family but have never been able to reach anyone. Jasper was there that day because I could not go. I was asked to conduct that seminar just a few days prior, and I opted out - to work on another seminar. And Jasper took my place that fateful day. I will never forget his sacrifice or his smile and his humor. I got to spend time with him the summer before in D.C. He was a brother to me, and I know he is missed by his family and friends. I never forget to pause and thank him on this special day.

I knew Jasper somewhat well; I have repeatedly tried to reach out to Lillian but cannot find her. Would love for Jasper's brother or family member to reach out to me; I want to share a story about their loved one. Miss you Jasper.

Jasper and I worked together many years ago at Greater Atlantic in West Phily. He was a wonderful and very caring guy who always had the best interests of our clients in his heart and deeds. I think of him often and send my prayers to his wife and family. He is not forgotten.

Jasper was not only a classmate at Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science(now Philadelphia University), but a good friend and nearby neighbor. Though careers, time, and distance were reasons for our lack of contact, I fond memories of Jasper being naturally inquisitive, always ready to laugh, and never appearing annoyed or angry. With a charismatic, yet determined spirit, Jasper's passion was to make a difference in his community.

In remembrance of a good friend, I extend thoughts of comfort and compassion to his wife, Lillian, and family for a life well lived with meaning and purpose.

During the month of Sept. 2000, as I scrolled through the victims names, I was breathless when I saw yours. Today I googled you, and saw your wonderful tributes. It seems that you were that same passionate person as I rembered at Soth Phila HS. You got your wings much earlier than we would have liked.

I did not know Jasper Baxter. But to honor the 20th anniversary, 3000 flags were displayed in front of the Art Museum in St. Louis, MO. When the floags were taken down, they were for sale and I bought the flag with Jasper's name on it. The flag will be flown proudly in Highland, IL at my address. The profit sfrom the sale of the flags was given to a charity to help injured Marines.

I met Jasper fresh out of the high school, while, working at Neighborhood Health Plan in Boston. Until this day, he was the best boss I've ever had. I never got the chance to really thank him for giving me valuable advice and really believing me. I was working at NBC in Boston, when I heard the news of his passing. He always encouraged me and told me I had gift and working with people will be my blessing. I'm proud to say, I currently work in community development and love my job. I wish I would've gotten the chance to give his wife my condolences. I wish I could tell her what he meant to me and how he shaped me in the person I've become. To a great boss and friend, Jasper, you're girl is still making you proud....

I remember Jasper as a quite and thoughtful person. Jasper and I worked together at Greater Atlantic in Philadelphia. Though our acquaintanceship outside of the office did not exist I know he was the same person no matter where he was. I can never forget his distinct laugh or his way of adding humor to tough moments to make a collaborative point. He was one who worked to unite people and to preserve their dignity.

He is often thought of as well as missed.

I was just now looking at a website that listed all of the names of the 9/11 victims. I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled... until the page finally came to an end. While scrolling, in the middle of the page, my eyes caught a name... "Baxter, Jasper," it said. Who is this person? What is his story? I wish I knew the story behind every name. So I did a search, and I'm now learning about you, Jasper. After I post this message, I will continue to read and learn about you. God bless you.. You are in our thoughts and prayers as yet another 9/11 anniversary approaches.

In memory of Jasper Baxter, I won 2nd place in my age group in the run.

I ran in memory of Jasper Baxter in the World Trade Center Run to Remember 5k on September 5, 2010.
I never met him. The race organizers wanted to have a runner for every person lost to the 9/11 attacks, and his name was printed on my race number. Reading his memorial here made me cry. He sounds like such a good man. I am so sorry for your loss.

I'll never forget my old friend Jasper from the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science back in the mid 70s...we had many fun times, good conversations, and tons of laughs. I'll never forget the times we spent studying in the dorms for finals, playing basketball in old Althouse Hall, or dating various beautiful women during our college days. But most of all, I'll never forget his friendship and his companionship.

Finally, I'll never forget the last time I saw Jasper...on the Broad Street subway going to a Philadelphia Eagles' night game several years ago. By then, I had moved south to the D.C. area, and we had lost contact over the years. As we rode, we talked about old times and friends over the loud sounds of excited fans and the train's engines. As we walked from the Pattison Avenue subway station to the Vet, we exchanged telephone numbers, and I promised to call. Unfortunately I didn't...and I'll always regret not keeping that promise.

Goodbye, old friend. May God bless and keep you safe in Heaven forever.

The appearance of Mr. Baxter's name in the beautiful poem written by Billy Collins prompted me to write. I want those who are no longer able to give him a hug to know that he - and they - are embraced in human love, for all time, by the family of man.

We are very sorry for your loss of Jasper. We thank him for all the help he gave others. Such acts of kindness are a warm reflection of his heart. May his warm heart, hard work, life and love live on in those who love him and in those who have been touched by his life. May warm memories of times together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

To Jasper, an old school friend, May God Be With You.

To Jasper's family, my deepest sympathy. Though it may have been many years since we went our seperate ways in life, I still remember Jasper through the days of walking to school together and joking about the things we would do in life. He accomplished in a short time what most people could not do in a lifetime....make people care.
