Denis Lavelle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 11, 2001.
A Mother's Devoted Son
Denis Lavelle idolized Rush Limbaugh and had cleared rooms at many a family gathering arguing his hard-line conservatism, but the last thing his relatives expected him to do was run for public office. But there was Mr. Lavelle over the summer, 42 and an absolute newcomer to retail politics, going door to door around Yonkers, where he was born and raised, collecting signatures for a run for the City Council on the Right to Life line.

"He had no chance," said his brother-in- law, Alex Dziadek. "But the party picked him because they knew he wouldn't take it lightly."

Mr. Lavelle, an accountant at Marsh & McLennan, had a ready smile, but he took his responsibilities seriously, and his greatest one was caring for his 75-year-old mother, who, widowed when he was 16, had become severely arthritic.

Mr. Lavelle, who never married, lived with his mother all his life, escorted her to Mass every Sunday and to the Italian restaurants on Central Avenue just about every weekend.

"He was so devoted to her," said Mr. Lavelle's sister Marie Paprocki. "He was a dedicated son."

As I cross-stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vain. We will always remember. God Bless.

Two members of St. Denis School's class of '78 alumni, both lose one of their brothers on the same tragic day. Paul Lavelle '78, lost his brother Denis, and Sean Lyons '78, lost his brother Michael '83.

Dear Denis,

I was shocked to see that I had already visited this page already, in 2002, as is evidenced by my entry. I came back here, due to fate, no doubt, as I had only within the last few days, stumbled upon this website, Legacy.com, due to fate. I was inexplicably compelled to make a tribute to my fellow St. Denis School alumnus of the class of '83, Michael J. Lyons, NYFD, who also died that day. So after that effort was only moments ago satisfied, I thought I would invest the same effort on your behalf. But I was already here years ago!!! Is this not irrefutable proof, that you you will never be forgotten.

I perused this page, which I should have read a little more closely a few years back, and just learned some new things about you, that I could've learned way back then. I had no clue, that you had run for office! You would have had my vote for sure!!!!!!!!!!

I was never, "in the know" about your "Missing" status, just like that of Michael J. Lyons, NYFD after the collapses, let alone that you guys were absolutely consumed at ground zero, on that fateful day, that your internments were conducted, long before we, your friends, learned you were even "missing".

> Denis, I had delivered food to you and your Mom, for over a decade from the Pizza Barn. I had worked for your family's business tandemly at Caam Auto Parts, as well. I mean, St Denis School's Class of '78, contained my sister Pamela, your brother Paul, Michael J. Lyons's (My buddy, NYFD, RIP 9-11-01 along with you)brother Sean, as well as your first cousin Carolanne, Darryl Ciucci (Darryn's older brother), Robbie Klein, etc, etc......

We are all, and even almost four years later, still reeling from the inadequacies of the opportunities that had been afforded us to mourn your demise as well the more critical opportunity to offer your surviving family members, our most heart felt condolences, in the first person and in the flesh, as circumstances had entirely dashed.
I have a really nice photo of you, that your sister Patricia gave me, and I will post it, as soon as I can find it and scan it.

I miss you, and I shall never let anyone ever forget!!!!

P.S I am attaching Mike's photo, and I ask that your guest's, sign on to Mike's page as well. Moreover, if this chain gains a few more links along the way, I will be sure to add my most refined posting to their page.

I shall never forget.

Dear family of Denis, As the date 9/11 comes in a few days, I wanted to tell you Denis has not been forgotten. I made a quilt block for him for the UIM quilt. I didn't have much information about Denis, but made a block in his memory. I hope as time goes by you have some peace and closure. It was a horrible event and one that will never be forgotten. I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Marjorie Priest

Dear Denis,

It wasn't until you were taken from us that I had realized that your name was spelled with one "N" instead of two. Ironically, our parish of St. Denis in Yonkers spelled it the same. You were only 16 when your family lost Francis Sr, I too was a teen when we lost John Peter Sr. I delivered pizza to you and your Mom on prospect Terrace for 13+ years and always marveled at how much you resembled your your dear brother Paul. I know Paul so intimately, because I was afforded a brief tenure at CA_AM Auto Parts in Yonkers, moreover I was afforded a delivery job for Pizza Barn in Yonkers.

I only found out about your murder after all was said and done. I also found out about a fellow Class of '83 St Denis buddy, too, well after the fact.

It's strange, my sister Pam, your brother Paul, and my bud's brother Sean Lyons were all in the same graduating class; '78.

I know that you are now in heaven and I pray that you will guide us, your surviving friends and family. ultimately to the splendor you rightfully have attained.

Pray for us as we pray for you. I miss you.

Love Kevin P. Murray

To the LaVelle family

Our prayers are with you each day.

We think of Denis and hope that the pain and grief you feel today will someday lighten. Denis has a special place in heaven and I'm sure the image of the many angels that carried him and the many heros there that day is still etched in your mind. There is beauty and peace in heaven, and from that place Denis is watching down on all of you.

Love to you all

Laurie, Peter and the boys.

We are very sorry for your loss of Denis. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
