Manuel DelValle Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 12, 2001.
Carpe Diem, to Music
Manny DelValle Jr. was an organized man — he had to be to find time for his extensive family and all of his interests. "Manny was a don't- leave-for-tomorrow- what-you-can-do-today guy," said his mother, Gricel Zayas-Moyer, of Brookline, Mass.

At home in the Bronx, Mr. DelValle took advanced classes in salsa dancing. He loved Latin music but listened to everything. "Rap," said his brother Pete Moyer. "And R&B," added his sister Grace Nolly. "Old school," said his father, Manuel Del Valle, to be specific.

Mr. DelValle, who graduated from the University of Maryland, was also an accomplished moguls skier and roller skater, a traveler, a lover of war movies and, his family says, a lady's man. He also got Engine Company No. 5, where he was assigned, to participate in the Puerto Rican Day Parade. He was the one in the family who always sent a card and gift to siblings, half-siblings and cousins.

He helped his stepfather get organized, too. "All of a sudden, my husband was remembering all this stuff, and he told me `Manny organized my Palm Pilot,' " Mrs. Zayas-Moyer said.

Dear Manny, I've had your memory bracelet since you bravely and unselfishly left us for your eternal home with Jesus where all of the heroes of 9/11 have gone. I tried to contact your family for many years unsuccessfully, so I just prayed. We'll, finally I did and you have a wonderful family. I just saw your picture and what a handsome guy! Now I know who to look for when I get to Heaven. Thank you for your sacrifice. My prayers will continue on for you and your family. I WILL NEVER FORGET

I was 15 years old, walking on the Orchard Beach boardwalk by myself when you sprayed me with a water gun to get my attention. I looked at you, saw those hazel eyes and sneaky smile and I knew I was in trouble! You asked why I was walking alone and I asked why you were wetting girls with a watergun "like an 8 year old boy!" Your father laughed and we spent the rest of the day sitting on my blanket laughing and getting to know eachother. You were hilarious and definitely knew how to charm the girls. We were fascinated to discover that we were born exactly 1 month apart. You were in love with your new little step-brother. I looked forward to summer cause I knew you'd come down from Massachusetts to visit your dad. I looked forward to our very long telephone calls, letters and cards. You were the only cool guy I knew of who sent greeting cards and small gifts by mail. I have every card, every photo....the letter you wrote when I went away to college, your High School senior photo. I hate that we grew up and lost contact, it breaks my heart that you're gone. It's taken me 22 years to leave a message. I'm a Captain in the FDNY, I've been here 20 years now, I joined after 9/11 and nearly collapsed the 1st time I discovered that you were a Firefighter and that you were gone. I heard your name read out loud at my 1st 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and as I stood there in my Class A uniform I couldn't believe I had found you and lost you all in one day. I had no idea you were in NY or that you were in the FDNY. Its no wonder that we both pursued the same career, we had so much in common and we definitely would've gotten a kick out discovering it. Old school jams remind me of you especially when I listen to Disco, cause you made so much fun of me. I miss you, I always have and I always will. I hate that your gone, it hurts. R.I.P.

My heart is absolutely full. I spent a great portion of my day reading your legacy page. I just can't believe it. How could you not be 48, running the streets, causing more of us to fall in love you. I've been loosing my marbles thinking about it. Everybody says the same thing, 'he's oh so saccharine and worthwhile". All of us girls just wanted a piece of you. Anyway, I'm gonna get grip on myself and let you rest. Can't wait to meet up so we can do shots. You won't believe what kind of liquor is on the market now. See you later.

January 1, 2017

Hello Manuel,

Where do I begin? Today is particularly hard for some weird reason, but then I think it is because it's a new year and you are not around to enjoy it or promote it. Your primas (Marisol and Eileen) can not stop taking about you. You can clearly see how much they love you and how proud they are of you. They, well, we wanted to see you flourish in every way possible on earth. Your passing is too hard to get over. Wishing you weren't there would have eaten you alive because you love helping everyone but dealing with the fact that you were there makes everyone sad. I mean, Manny...this is hard. Everybody loves you and you made everyone feel free and comfortable and we are desperate to be around you again. I've been wanting to go to Puerto Rico since high school but how can I now. Looking up the Copamarina Beach and Spa Resort makes me wanna cry and guess what, I do. I...Happy New Year, Manny.

November 30, 2016

Today was a little rough. I got bad news about a class I have to take. The instructor's neck is made of brick and evidently so is a her heart. Well, the situation brought me back to you or at least how you would handle things and I would have loved to hear you give me some advice. I'd pretty much know what you'll say but it's just the principle of the matter. You rarely took disappointments and I guess that's one of the many things that set you apart from the rest. RIP.

Cousin Manny, I was fortunate enough to have met you once and spend a great long weekend skiing here in the CO mountains with you, Nolly, Petey and other cousins. I will never forget how incredibly handsome, generous and loving you were. 15 years already, doesn't seem possible. Such an amazing hero, taken too soon. Love you

September 11, 2016

You were so handsome. I really think everyone got a kick out of all things you did. Spreading yourself thin, always attempting to please everyone. You really took your title of graciousness and beauty quite seriously. Even though you were a handful. I think it's safe to say we all have been trying to figure out the magic words that were supposed to bring you back. "Abacadabra, Kaboom, Kazaam, Hocus Pocus". But you're still not here. Well, I'm out of words. #15 Septembers Later or is #15 Septembers Before, I don't know, I just really miss you.

15-yrs ago in Union Square Park, I took a photo of a small piece of paper taped to the pavement with two pictures of a firefighter with the kindest smile and a simple plea. Flowers had been placed around it. Although, the entire area had been covered with tributes and flyers, for some reason this particular one stood out to me. It wasn't until recently that I learned of Firefighter Manuel Del Valle. I didn't know you personally, but a beautiful soul who will be remembered.

I was watching the news yesterday and the rumor was there were a few men that decided to honor all 343 firefighters who were sacrificed [that day] for the 4th of July, today. You are apparently very lovely underneath and on top of it all. I'm very proud in the fact that you were never and will never be forgotten. :D

I remember that day so clearly .your lil brother Peter Moyer were dating at the time ...Well Peter and I were watching tv early that morning and it was all over the new what had happened...I can remember the look on his face and the words that came out of his mouth so faintly "My Brother is a New York Firemen !!!" Then he kinda shuck his head and said if he is there his runs the truck he should be ok,but knowing him he will go in...Well Peter said sorry we gonna have to break our plans I should real go home ...I remember walking him outside and watching him walk away to his car...I felt as if my heart were in my chest..I knew that if his brother was anything like Peter he would be helping with more than his regular duty....Well I don't thing it was more than 2-3 hrs later when I received the call from Peter...He's gone he said..His Ladder was on of the first to enter the building and the building collapsed ..OMG all I can say is a HUGE piece of my heart had died at that moment..I never had the chance to meet Manny ,but I was told so many wonderful story about him...He was one of America biggest Heros...I remember the President being on TV giving a speech saying ...u will always remember where you were and what you were doing on 911..Well that day Pete was with me ready to have a fun day & Learned a few hrs later that his hero was gone.....I will never ever forget that day ..Although we are not together that day gave us a special bond and we are very dear friends till this day...I want to ask that anyone reading this always remember Manny & to keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers... xo

I recently participated in the "Stair climb" to honor those fallen firefighters of 9/11. It was in Reno, NV at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. We all got to pick an ID badge for a fallen firefighter and I chose "Manny". I still keep that badge in my desk drawer so I see it every day. I will never forget and will climb again next year when the group returns in his honor.

Manolito,

10 years have passed since we lost you forever. No good-bye hugs, no good-bye kisses, no warning. So sudden, so unexpected, so tragic, so painful.

10 years since we saw your face, saw you smile, heard your jokes, heard you tell your stories, listened to your advice.

I miss you. Words can't describe our pain - even to this day. And, then having your Engine 5 brother, Ray Ragucci, die from a 9/11 related illness right before the 10th anniversary was heartwrenching. Another family suffers from this terrible terrible day. His death just made this anniversary so much more difficult for us as well as, I'm sure, the Engine 5 guys. They are so kind and generous with us. Ray was always so good as well. We lost you, but gained a group of men and now a woman as family.

May you be talking up a storm with Ray up there. We love you.

Love you - more than I ever told you,
your cousin,
Eileen

We attended a 9/11 memorial service in our hometown in Ohio. All were invited to take a handmade rose that were all constructed together to form an American flag. Please know that our family is praying for your family and although it's been 10 years...we will never forget.

Hi Manny,
I can't believe it's been nine years since the last time I saw your handsome smiling face. We miss you more and more as time passes by.
I had the privilege of reading your name this year at the 9/11 memorial ceremony. I was so worried that I would not be able to maintain my composure and start crying. I prayed for strength to get through it and I talked to you a lot before hand. I was a wreck the day before but surprisingly enough I felt very serene and peaceful that morning. I know that I had a very special angel standing right beside me on that stage when I was reading the names. Thanks for coming through again.
You are forever in my heart.

I will always remember Manny, not because we were classmates in Olinville Jr. High in the Bronx, but because I grew such a crush on him. I remember his face to this day 25+ years later. I remember meeting Manny only once at his Dad's apartment in the Bronx after I took Robert home from a gym workout. I remember MANNY SR. introducing me and getting into one of his hilarious stories. I always remembered how much Robert & his Dad spoke highly of him. I did not know him well personally, but after 9/11 I finally came to realize what Robert & his Dad were talking about, and for the record, their words did not do him justice. Rest in peace Manny, you are a hero & an inspiration to us all.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.
