I visited the memorial. I came from Missouri. As I was looking at the names hers called to me. After finding her here I am in awe. We are kindered spirits. My heart aches for her family but even in death she has made a friend.

20 years gone and she played a tragic role in one of the biggest catastrophes and tragedies in American history , Betty’s name remains on our lips and in our hearts . We think what could’ve been if we were able to have kept her here in New Orleans. But the fates had a different destiny in mind for her . To describe Betty Farmer was to say , she led a life well lived and her passing was as large as her life . She was destined to become a part of American history books and the American psyche .
Betty , Please watch over your musician brothers and sisters ! Dealing with this pandemic , they are not working much .
They need a guardian angel
Now more than ever .

With respect, I was Betty's #1 groupie in all of Denver! It started at Bryant Street West and continued through the Denver Art Museum, the Anchor and Plow restaurant, a few hotel gigs, and of course, The Bay Wolf! I wore a button with I heart Bryant Street West to an event long after BSW closed and was warmly embraced by Betty. She saved me a seat at the Bay Wolf and let me put sets together (even though this non-musician was clueless!). I was living in Mexico when 9-11 occurred and did not learn of her passing until recently returning to Colorado. Condolences to her daughter. Heaven be swinging now! I love Betty Farmer!

I worked with your dad in New Orleans for many years. You didn't know me, but he spoke of his beautiful, talented daughter with much love. Another year and I miss you and your beautiful voice, bawdy laughter, great heart more each year. For those interested, last night I found a CD of Betty's songs recorded in San Francisco from "CDBaby.com". Subject: .....how are your days?
I had such a lovely Sunday... I cannot tell you. Took the train to
Tarrytown and sat outside at the local yatch club, sucking in Hudson River
air and water. Got sunburned, drank too much beer and wine -- ate a too
greasy fish dinner, laughed myself silly and staggered back to NY by 11:00.
It was great! Young friends of mine are preparing to open their own "baby"
shop on main street there -- and I was privy to some of their industry in
preparation. Very exciting. I thought of you and how much you might have
enjoyed hanging out like that... and it was an absolutely GORGEOUS day!
You should, you know -- just throw everything in the air now and then, and
get the hell out of The City. Before the snows flies, I'm gonna do it
again. Come go with me... we can just sit and sip and talk BIG dreams."

I never got to meet Ms. Farmer, but worked with her father at the power company in New Orleans many years ago.
He used to tell me how talented she was and he was proud of her. I'm saddened that I did not get to hear her sing.
On that horrible day 10 years ago, I was living in Natchez, MS. and figured there was no way I could possibly know anyone who perished in the World Trade Center. About six months later, I received a copy of an article from a friend who also worked with Ms Farmer's father. The article was about her passing. I'm still in shock.
May God Bless her family and friends.

Betty was a pistol. She had a huge heart and mouth to match. I sat next to her for 2 years and she always cracked me up. There were times when the head of the sales department her boss at Showtime would tell her to do something she did not want to do she always would curse him out in the nicest way. I remember the firecracker that she was the stories that she told and the advice that she gave, When I remember her it makes me smile.
Miss you Betty

I knew that Betty perished in the 9-11 tragedy but I did not know about her on-line tribute until today.
I worked with Betty at Showtime Network. We didn't work in the same department but sat near each other. She was a lovely person, a great raconteur, in fact, and I always made a point of stopping by her desk just to say 'hello' or hear one of her stories, which she told with such great humor.
Each year on 9-11, I wait to hear her name called during the ceremonies and tears still come to my eyes. She spoke so very often and lovingly of her daughter and their closeness and so I want to send my deepest condolences to her and let her know that her mother was loved by so many and missed by even more.
Sleep with the angels, Betty.

So many of us knew Betty as this outspoken, bawdy, irreverant and funny woman. I was fortunate to be the recipient of one of her many kind moments that aren't so often remembered. I was alone throughout a pregnancy when we both lived in New Orleans and both worked at the Bistro. Betty went out of her way to help me in any way she could and she was the person she wanted to be called when it was time to go to the hospital. So in the middle of the night (when else) on Oct. 1, 1969, Betty was awakened from sleep and she took me to the hospital and stayed with me until after my son was born. She bestowed upon me her unique humor and the power of her unconditional friendship that night. I shall never forget her. God bless you, Betty.

Betty was my neighbor when I lived in Denver. I had moved from Boston to Denver for a job. Betty and I became friends. I heard her perform many times. I worked with Betty at Showtime Networks (I was based in the Dallas office). She made my visits to the New York office so much fun. We'd slip away during the work day across the side street to a little bar and have coffee and just chat and laugh about things (and people we worked with). She was such a funny, delightful person. I often think of the great stories she used to tell me. I sure miss her, especially on this day--- the 5th anniversary. Rest in Peace Betty!

When we were Seventeen . . . I knew Betty at All Saints' Episcopal High School in Vicksburg, MS. We were boarding school "roomies" in our junior year of high school in that small Southern town -- so full of history, and memories of the past. Today 9/11/2006, especially, I am remembering the beautiful, talented, bright, exotic, theatrical, dramatic, smart, young girl I knew, and was absolutely fascinated by. We whispered and shared our girlish secrets and dreams at night, as we enjoyed "tempting the Fates" by smoking (a really Big NO-NO)!
I have never forgotten Betty -- we both left All Saints' at the end of that one year. And our paths never crossed again -- although we were often in the same places at different times. How I wish I could have known that Betty was just an hour or so away from my home in New Jersey in 2001 -- I would have certainly tried to make contact with her! THE MOST unforgettable character I ever met!

What an exciting woman and what an exciting essence of smoldering , hot, sexy jazz with a twinkle in the wink of an eye laughing at an inside joke ! I met her as she played a gig at a Casino in Baton Rouge. My husband Lloyd Cambre accompanied her on drums, as he had done several times in the past. She was a legend in the New Orleans music scene and I knew of her. Still, I was not prepared to meet this ageless woman in her early sixties, in the most provocative, fit snug to an hour glass figure , bright red sequined, low cut dress. With her bright red , short, very chic, cropped hair, she'd already made a very charismatic impression on her audience even before she began crooning out those honey dripped notes of some love gone wrong song.
Of course, the room was mesmerized and at the break, I made a new friend. Her kindness and patience to visit and explain what she does to a hearing impaired woman trying to understand music was even more beautiful then her physical beauty, talent and even was ....more beautiful then that incredible red sequined dress few women in the world could wear so well. Yes, she was eccentric ( everybody in New Orleans is, in a way), glamorous, talented and very independent. She did what she wanted, the way that she wanted, loved who she wanted and LIVED exactly the way she wanted. She had talent and a very, very big heart with a strong weakness for the underdog. She certainly understood lean, hard times. She'd had more then her share. The world doesn't understand and always accept an independent women.
Thank you Betty for so much heart in your music. I'm sure you are wearing a red dress and entertaining the angels now. The only thing they can do is flap their wings and say , ' Laissez les bon temps roulez !'

Betty was a good friend and fine jazz singer and I am glad I had the opportunity to get to know her in the 1980's. I first met her at her nightclub in Denver and she was flamboyant, talented and gutsy. She and I both left Denver in the late 1980's to pursue our musical careers. She worked in San Francisco with a dear friend of mine, Flip Nunez (passed away a few years ago). My condolences to her daughter. Kevin Smith and I speak of her often when at Shakespeare's in Denver. I would love to have a copy of her musical recording because someone here asked me for one and I had no idea of where to acquire anything she had recorded.

From one free spirit to another, I wish I would have had the pleasure to have heard you sing. From the comments on this entry board, it appears that you "touch" many lives and gave the pleasure of your talent to many. May your soul rest in peace. If there is a life beyond, may you touch as many lives as you did this and may you find sultry, rich happiness.

When Betty was doing her thing at the Bistro, I dropped in occasionly, but I really didn't get aquainted with her until she took a secretarial job at the Lamplighter Club in New Orleans.
Later she moved to Houston and sang at the Raffles Club. I saw her frequently there as I made several trips a month to Houston. While in Houston she married Ike, a bass player and she asked me to "give her away".
After she moved to Vegas, my then girlfriend Mary and I saw her a few times. In Oct. '79 Mary and I spent 16 hours in Vegas and got married at 11 P.M. At about 2 or 3 A.M. we woke her up with a call to tell her we had gotten married. She suggested lunch - we told her we told her we had to check out at 10. At 9 we recieved the largest floral arrangement I have ever seen. It was some 4 to 5 feet tall and had the most beautiful assortment of flowers, white feathers, white satin doves, etc.
She had called a florist friend and ordered him to make very, very outstanding arrangement and have it to our hotel by 8:30.
Mary and I have often marveled at what an unusual person she was - with all her talents and personality.
Like many, we were shocked and saddened by her death. We feel fortunate that we could share a close friendship for the years we did.

Nearly a year has passed but not a day goes by that I don't think of Betty. When she left Showtime in December 2000, I told her this place would never be the same without her and she would be sorely missed. It isn't and she is. I learned in the days and weeks following her death that she touched the lives of a great many people, not just in New York, but in Denver, New Orleans and anywhere else her travels took her. I am blessed to be one of those people.

Betty greatly increased my look on life - I knew her for about a year in San Francisco, where I was employed as a bartender and Betty was one of my regular customers. I'm lucky enough to have a CD of Betty performing a show at the Mason Street Wine Bar in SF - it would be a pleasure for me to give one of these to anyone here in the guest book as a remembrance of Betty. Those of us that work at the Doubletree Hotel in New Orleans were shocked and saddened to read of Betty's death. Betty was Executive Secretary for @ one year in the mid 90's, and she was quite a memorable lady with lots of spunk!
Reading now about her musical talents, I do wish I'd had the opportunity to hear her perform. It was obvious that Betty liked to move around alot, and that she probably wasn't staying here long either!
My deepest condolences to her friends and family.....especially to her daughter, of whom she constantly spoke during our conversations in the "smoke room".
Most Sincerely,

What a beautiful woman with a dazzling smile and sparkling eyes. Such a smile and shining eyes must be from a reflection of a warm and caring heart. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Betty. May Betty's musical passion, her life and love live on in those who love her. May you always feel the warmth of her heart radiate love into your hearts. May the sorrow you feel be lightened by the precious memories of warm moments shared with Betty. Our hearts cry with you.
America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I worked with Betty at Showtime. She was the executive assistant to a somewhat harsh executive vice president. She made me laugh at the fact that she did not suffer fools well. She gave the executive a lot of grief over a period of time. She was totally irreverent to those in authority around her - but in a funny way. I will always remember her wit and outlook on life.

Betty was a great inspiration to me as a singer and as a human being. She taught me so much about performing and phrasing a song and was totally committed to every single word of every lyric she sang. Her New Orleans drawl and down to earth attitude about everything made her very easy to love and to trust. And she definitely was a character! I miss her very much.

I knew "Ms. Farmer", as we used to call her, back in the late eighties when we both lived in Denver. I played piano at a little gay club called "Garbo's" where she regularly appeared. We all knew we were in the presence of a huge talent. What distinguished her singing was not just her uncanny sense of time but the attachment to the lyric of whatever song she was performing. I remember especially her rendition of "Ballad of the Sad Young Men". Rarely a dry eye in the house when she finished that one.
I remember once her shaking a finger at me and telling me in that inimitable New Orleans accent, "I'm a damned good secretary! You had better believe it. You don't think I've supported myself all these years just singing! A girl has got to survive in this world!"
Who would have guessed that that very skill would lead to her untimely death? What a crime it is that somebody with as much talent as she had would be typing instead of doing what she could do as well as any singer I ever heard.
I felt as if I had been kicked in the stomach when I heard the news that she was in that building on Sept. 11.
I'm only grateful that I was priviledged enough to see her perform all those nights back in Denver and to get to know the one and only "Ms. Farmer" just a little bit.
Wherever she is, I wish her all the love and peace she so richly deserves.
