I met Gil in early July 1970. He and I were entering the US Merchant Marine Academy as the Class of 1974. Over the next four years, we all got to know him pretty well. Unfortunately, just days before graduation, Gil was informed he was a few credits short and he'd have to stay behind to complete a few more classes. So he became a member of the Class of '75 and he graduated in June of that year. Last weekend the Class of '74 held our 50th reunion at the academy. On the schedule of events was the reading of the names of classmates who have passed away over the years. Although Gil wasn't "technically" a member of our class, we always considered him to be one of us. So I asked the group to include him. The list was read, but Gil wasn't mentioned. However, when our classmate got to the end, he said "... and there's one name we must include here... GIL GRENADOS". Then, as per maritime tradition, a ship's bell was rung eight times to pay respect to deceased mariners and signifies that a sailor's “watch” is over. Now, I'm pretty sure that the Class of '75 also honors Gil in a similar way. So he's remembered by both the Class of '74 and the Class of '75. He might be the only graduate to have that honor. And that makes him special.

Dear Gil, every time I do a crossword puzzle, I think of you. I ordered a NY Times Monday book (easiest for me), you are the genius.
See you again, always help your family from Heaven. Jo Ann
Taken during our junior year at Garfield HS in East Los Angeles. Gilbert did most the posters and banners for our class activities. Because our class mascot was Snoopy from the Peanuts cartoons, Gilbert was nicknamed "Mr Snoopy" Continue

Ten years ago, I posted this picture of Gil on this Legacy page. Yesterday, I thought a nice way to honor Gil's memory, would be to ask Long Island Newsday to print or post the photo along with the story behind it. The kids in the picture have to be in their mid-50s by now. If any of them are still on Long Island and they still read Newsday (print or online), it would be great for at least one of them to say "I remember the day when that photo was taken and I also remember that guy in the bottom left". At this point, I don't know if the paper will run the photo and the story. The following text is what I sent to Newsday along with the photo...
I thought maybe Newsday might print this picture taken in November 1973 at the US Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point). Gil Granados is in the front row on the left. He worked for AON Corp in the south tower of the World Trade Center. He died there on 9/11. These kids "knew" Gil for a fleeting moment back in 1973. Maybe some of the kids in the photo are still on Long Island and might like to see this old picture...?
I knew Gil very well. We were both in 1st Company at Kings Point and we were both on the same career path. Gil is on the left in the front row. I'm in the middle. The photo from November 1973 was supposed to be just a shot of the six officers in uniform. So we had someone take a couple of photos with just the six of us. But a bunch of kids who were on a field trip to the Academy happened to show up just as we were finishing. Gil said "Let's get a picture with the kids in it."

Gil, I was at WTC 9/11 Memorial today for the first time in 20 years and literally bumped into you while looking for another friend. Left you a flower and sent you and your family some prayers. Thanks for your selfless mentoring and friendship during our days together at Reserve Group Atlantic Area. You’ll be glad to know that I hung around for 36 years and retired from active duty as a Commander. God bless you!

Still missing you. I remember when I was about 3 or 4 years old and calling you ”Brother”. I guess I was too young to know your name and I was just starting to understand the concept of siblings. We were in the front yard of the house on 95th street and you turned to me and said, “my name is Gilbert, not Brother!” Even then you knew who you were, someone special. Continue to watch over your family. Gene is with you now. Guide him. Love and miss you so.

I remember Gil as though we had just talked this morning. What a CAN DO and WILL DO attitude. I often wondered, how could such a nice guy get so much done. I learned that the secret was that Gil knew how to be a VERY competent teammate even while he was in charge. His people worked very smart and hard to make him happy because they knew that he was doing the same at his level for them. He made my job easier and made me look good. What a loss. It was an honor serving with you and having you work for me. Rest In Peace, Gil.

Gilbert, may God bless you and your family. I really never got a chance to meet you, but was introduced to you and your family. Growing up next door to my Tia Olivia was lots of fun. She took good care of me and my brothers. I remember sitting in her living room as a small child and staring up at her walls; where she had displayed the most beautiful China Dolls on shelves. The Dolls dresses where so bright and colorful. Their hair was held up with chop sticks. I was memorized by these dolls. My Tia was so proud to tell me her son Gilbert my cousin that was in New York send them to her. She brought out her photo albums and introduced me to you and your family. She loved you and your family so very much and was so proud of you. I am sorry that I never really got a chance to meet you,but thankful that my Tia introduced me to you. God Bless you and your Family.

Tender mercies and gentle prayers for you as you honor Gil's legacy. I learned of Gil from my friends Scott and Marian Liebling. They give Gil and his widow Terry their highest praise. Surely he was a man to be admired, a father to be adored, a husband to be cherished and a friend to be valued. His life of service and good citizenship endears him to all Americans, and it is an honor to remember him.

To Gilbert in Heaven:
I'm a fellow classmate from Garfield High in East Los Angeles, CA. I can't help remembering Gilbert and what a special person he was, we went to high school together, and to know that we lost him is still incomprehensible to me even after 5 years. I have followed Gilbert's memorial since I heard the terrible news, and when I read in the L.A. Times about his father's passing, it only seemed natural because it's not easy losing your child-- no matter how old they are. God took Gilbert because He has other plans for him and God knows Gilbert is special inside and out. God already knows Gilbert touched the heart of many with his good works!
So to Gilbert in Heaven, thank you for being such a genuine friend to me even though it was so very long ago.
May God bless your loving wife and daughters and may they find peace in knowing that you were loved by many people near and far.
Gilbert, rest in peace and I will see you again!
Love and friendship,

Dear Family,
There was a time when Gil would come by each day and if he or I didn't have a NY Times paper, we'd find one to get the crossword, and he would get us each a copy to work on. And, of course, he was superior at it and would fill a puzzle in no time.

I am your wife's cousin Robin. My husband John went to be with you on May 27th ....please find him and tell him who you are ( I already told him to look for you) . I knew Mr. Granados from the Coast Guard Reserve when he was Commanding Officer of my unit in the '90's. He was one of the best CO's I had in the Reserves, and was always available to the men (and women) of the unit, as well as the "regulars". I believe he was instrumental in my advancement up the ranks. In fact, one time, he invited me to his home to take an exam that I needed in order to sit for the Servicewide Exam that would determine who advanced and who didn't.
I was shocked to read one day in Newsday that he was, unfortunately, one of those in the WTC that terrible day. May G-d have mercy on his soul. We didn't know each other for very long, but I will miss him.

I got to know Gil through my job at Aon in Information Technology. I was assigned to Gil's floor, on 92, and then on 98 when his department moved. I always enjoyed chatting with Gil, who had a great sense of humor, especially when it came to problems with his laptop computer. He and I would make jokes about how Microsoft gave me such great job security, since Gil's laptop seemed to have so many problems. This joking continued when Gil got a brand new laptop, which unfortunately had a defective part. Gil would not stop kidding me about his new "improved" laptop.
I will miss Gil and our chats. The world is a sadder place without this gentle, funny soul.

Dearest Gil,
We didn't work in the same department, but if it wasn't for a fax coming or going, or getting what we printed, or just that cup of coffee when we would all meet. We would all talk for a bit and then back to work. We had many laughs. You will be missed.

We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
