Courtney Walcott Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 15, 2001.
Uncovering a Busy Life
First: Courtney, 37, was the most organized man in the solar system. In his Hackensack, N.J., apartment, the bills were in sequence and organized by category; his shirts were separated into short-sleeve, long-sleeve and dress; the khakis sorted by shade, the shoes by season, the sneakers by sport and the sock drawers by type and color.

Second: Courtney Walcott had good reason to keep his life uncluttered. He was too busy to waste time hunting for socks that matched.

Delano Walcott knew about the regular visits his brother made to their parents in Queens and their grandmother in Hempstead. He also knew about the peewee football camp he helped coach at his alma mater, Hofstra, every summer, where he supervised one godson; and the basketball team he coached in Hackensack, where he watched over another.

But as he sat at the memorial service at the Allen A.M.E. Church in Jamaica, Queens, Mr. Walcott learned that every Monday and Friday after work, his brother would drive to the church to be a mentor to teenage boys, counseling them, getting them jobs at Shea Stadium. Then he would drive home to New Jersey. At least 30 boys told the Walcotts how Courtney Walcott, who was divorced and longed for children of his own, had graced their lives. The family had had no idea.

Every 9/11 your name comes to mind. I had a friend go live and found your name on the plaque. I said a quick prayer and thanked her for finding you. I barely know you but your story still resonates in my mind. I know your cousin through college, Marlo. And I try to keep in touch. Thank you for reminding me to acknowledge you and your colleagues every 9/11 and I will continue to do so.

I played football with Courtney and his brother for the Northern Blvd Trojans. He was a great teammate, a quiet leader and was always smiling. One of the nicest guys I ever met. I still have a vivid memory of one of his touchdown runs.
I learned of his misfortune at a Jamaica HS reunion. I always think of him when I reflect on that day

Fourteen years ago, I was a student at Temple University during the first anniversary of 9-11. In memory of the victims, I selected a name to hold on to and honor throughout the day and at the end of the day, we would read our selected names and then place the name in a memorial box. I selected Courtney's name. All day, I held on to this small piece of paper and thought about the life that Courtney had. I imagined that he was loved by many and missed so dearly. I imagined that he had friends and family with whom he shared an abundance of loving and memorable experiences. When it came time for me to meet at the campus memorial site, I printed off a copy of Courtney's name and placed it on my bulletin board above my desk. I wanted to honor Courtney's life beyond that day. So Courtney's name remained there for the entire school year and it remains in my heart to this day. He will never be forgotten. Thank you for sharing his legacy.

I never knew Courtney. Although I am a journalist, for the first few weeks after 9/11 I couldn't read or watch the news. Finally one day, in an apartment a few blocks from the still-smoldering site, I sat down and opened The New York TImes to read that day's "Portraits of Grief." Randomly, I focused first on Courtney's portrait. I read that he was a neat freak who traveled to Queens twice a week to mentor teenagers. At a memorial service, more than 30 boys told the family that Courtney had influenced them. I sobbed and sobbed. Every year since, on the anniversary, I have reread that all-too-brief portrait. My sincere condolences to Courtney's family and friends.

Courtney - this southern girl visited the big city of New York in August. It was overwhelming to say the least! Nothing like Winston-Salem, NC! When I visited the 9/11 Memorial I found your name on the wall and touched it and the memories of our work days and friendship felt alive again. The tribute inside the memorial for you by your family made the tears flow again. I still think of you often and always will.

I think of Courtney and am thankful for the impact he had on our lives albeit for such a short time. CW,

I took my 15 and 12 yr old girls to the memorial about 2 months ago. They were pretty unaffected by the rain falling that day, as they were taken in by the awe surrounding them ... I told them a story about a friend of mine, who was lost that day; a truly incredible person. I will never forget you CW. I pray for you and your family, especially today. God Bless.

Courtney, you were not only my boss at Dreyfus you were my friend. We spent many days talking about different topics. You were like a brother. I remember those times after work that we worked out at Bally's. I also remember when you moved to NC and we lost touch for a minute then I found out that we were working for the same company again (Wachovia). Except you were in NC and I was in Atlanta. We spoke for a while on the phone and like most dudes we catch up when we can. I never thought in a million years that you moved back to NY. Then I found out what happened and it hit me hard. You were always a good person and I will never forget you my brother! Tony M
