A Man Who Took His Time

Robert J. Baierwalter thought outside of the box. In high school, he and some friends hoisted a drum set, piece by piece, up to his bedroom so his mother would not know (at least not for a few hours). Decades later, as an account underwriter for FM Global, he liked creating insurance deals his co-workers thought impossible. And when other fathers sped to work early, he stayed home until 8:45 a.m., when Veronica, 14; Richard, 11; and Raymond, 6, left for school.

"He watched their grades like a hawk," said his wife, Laura. "It's a very difficult job, I'm finding out now. He used to ask Veronica every three days, `What's your math average?' and he was always on the phone with the teachers."

She and his friends remember how Mr. Baierwalter, 44, was always late. "Now that I look back, I see he never rushed for anything," said Debbie Falls, a neighbor. "He enjoyed life. He took his time. He didn't have much time here."

Mr. Baierwalter, who lived in Albertson, N.Y., worked in Norwalk, Conn., but was at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 for a meeting at 8:30 a.m. "It was probably the first time in his life he was on time," Ms. Falls said.

As we approach the 20th Anniversary of 911, Bob and his family will always be in our hearts and prayers. I was very lucky to have know Bob as a coworker and car pool buddy for many years. I’m still in shock and saddened to know that Bob who was never on time for anything, was on time that faithful day. May he continued to rest in eternal peace and happiness. May God Bless.

A few years ago, I was surprised and saddened to learn that Bob was amongst those who died in the 9/11/2001 attacks on the WTC. I worked with him in the mid-late 1980s as his secretary in the Underwriting Dept. of Arkwright Boston, a commercial insurance company, in Greenwich, CT.

He was so full of life and just a great all around person with a wonderful sense of humor. He was very much a family man who was well liked and respected by everyone at work. Just being in his presence always affected you because he was so positive and happy all of the time -- always such a pleasure to be around.

My prayers go out to his family, as well as to all of those who lost someone on 9/11. You will be remembered -- today and always. God bless America.

It was two weeks before 9/11 that my husband Bob and I attended a wedding for my nephew. We had a great time with Bob and Laura. It wasn't his time to die. His family needed him. God bless my niece Laura and her children. We love you.

Tomorrow I'm riding in a 9/11 Memorial Bike Ride. Each Rider is representing someone from that day. Robert is the name that I am representing. I've read his story and very proud to represent someone that loved his family so much. I wish his family well wishes on this day.

I often think of Bob and how great of a person he was. The last time we played golf he was playing amazingly well and I remember how he would talk about music - how great the intro was to a Start me up was for example. While we mostly discussed work the last time called he just wanted to know how my kids were doing..at that was it. Great man. Hope Laura and the kids are doing well.

It is hard to believe that it has been 10 years since that horrible event. I can still hear Bob referring to me as "LF". Bob comes to mind more often than you might realize... he was smart but he also saw the unique or bizarre in everything. Whenever I need to look at something in a new light, I stop to think, what would Bob say?

Laura and family, I hope you are all well. Know that I think of Bob and you often. Bob, you have not been forgotten.

My thoughts and prayers are still with you.

I worked with Bob at the Arkwright Mutual in the late 80's. I roomed with him when we traveled on business trips and I will never forget his "alarm clock" of Pink Floyd music. He was a friend as well as my underwriter. I am so sorry for his sacrifice as well as my not staying in touch after I left Arkwright. May God bless Bob's family and may they never forget their father.

Dear Laura and family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I didn't know until recent years of Bobs passing. I was an Underwriting Assistant and worked with Bob at Arkwright from 1987 to 1990. Bob created a pleasurable working environment with his positive attitude and kind spirit. He was very intelligent and generously shared his wealth of knowledge with others. I will always remember Bob for the true genuine person that he was. I send my deepest sympathy to you and your family.

I worked with Bob at Arkwright from 1984 to 1993. Mostly over the phone. I was in Waltham MA and he was in Connecticut. He was always a pleasure to work with and fun to be with at social events.

Time passes but thoughts and memories of Bob continue to this day.
Bob was a friend first, then co-worker.
I remember his lust for life and love of music. I choose to honor him not only on 9/11 but especially on his birthday coming up in May.
I want his kids to know that Bob was an awesome and cool person who won many people over with his great personality and beautiful eyes.

I'm a friend of Robert's niece. As a friend, I wanted to pay my respects and let you know that even people who didn't know him, miss him; the words from his friends, family, and co-workers, describe him as a wonderful, caring person - not surprising. You're all in our thoughts. God bless-

Bob and I worked together for over 20 years. During that time, we became more than just co-workers. Bob was a good friend to everyone that knew him. He was highly respected for his sense of fair play, his honesty, and his willingness to help whenever asked.

Bob will be surely missed. His like will not be seen again.

While I worked with Bob for 15 years, he was my friend before being my co-worker. He was the smartest person I ever met and he was always willing to patiently impart his knowledge. He made me laugh more often than I can remember. He'll always be "cosmic" Bob!

Bob was my next door neighbor at FM Globals Norwalk office and as such, I got to know and love his whit, intellect and above all, his laugh. Bob was always late to arrive in the office and late to leave. Frequently I would first notice he was in when I heard him pacing his office as he gave someone of the other end of the phone a lengthy and detailed account of the insurance industry, trends and how policies and underwriting worked. Of all the years I knew him, I never saw him seated and on the phone at the same time. Walking and talking went together for Bob. We miss him in Norwalk, and always will. There is a void that can never be filled, but I will remember forever the years that we knew each other and the many discussions we had. My deepest symphonies to his family.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

As a native New Yorker & American, I am deeply affected by this horrific tragedy. Although, I didn't know Bob personally, it is apparent by his picture and other entries, that he truly loved his family and lived a happy life. I hope that in time, those close to him can cherish their special moments as the healing continues. May Bob rest in peace.
