James Waring Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 16, 2001.
The Joys of Fatherhood

When James Waring's first child, Jessica, was born 14 years ago his sister Mary Jane Edgar wondered what kind of a dad he would be.

Her brother, after all, once bought 30 bottles of Charlie perfume to give to all his girlfriends and never outgrew his love of the Animals, the Rolling Stones, the Kinks and all the other bands he played on his white Fender Stratocaster in high school bands. Might he find fatherhood a bit dull?

Not a chance. Mr. Waring, the 49-year-old director of security for Cantor Fitzgerald, did everything his way, growing up in New York rooting for the White Sox and the Packers. But he found his greatest joy in being with his four daughters. His wife, Maria, worked at night, so he was home at 5:15 every afternoon taking the girls to dance lessons or playing softball with them. He took them to the beach every summer and had just taught the youngest, 5-year-old Jamie, how to swim.

Mr. Waring took his daughters to 13 Yankees games last summer and had one more coming up, Sept. 12, against the White Sox, where he planned to show up as usual in his White Sox jacket and cap, calling out a cheery, "How you doing, babe?" to everyone he met. He had the tickets with him at work Sept. 11.

I read about your Daddy. The way you described him I felt like I knew him. What a Dad! All of his girls are so beautiful and I'm sure he is so proud of you all. The pictures made me laugh (The Cheesehead One). The Pack is Back! I love it. This was a joyful experience reading about all of you. God Bless.

Jimmy...as I watch the 9/11 12th Anniversary ceremony on TV it still feels like the first year. Hearing your name read and seeing your picture resurfaces all the feelings as if it was the first year. Jessica read names today and memorialized you and did a wonderful job. I know you are proud of her and all your girls! They keep your memory alive each and every day. We all relive the memories we cherish back in the years. You are missed and will always be in our hearts until we all have a big party up there one day! Continue resting peacefully and looking after all of us here.... Love & Hugs, your sis-in-law Laura P.S. You better come through and visit us tonight lol....

It's amazing how much one man can impact the lives of his children, even though we were only on this earth together for a short time.

I've been thinking about you more than ever as we continue to move forward and follow in your footsteps. I feel blessed that we were able to see Tom Petty for the second time in May and the Stones in June... we felt you there with us and still hear your voice singing above the music as if you're a member of the band, that will remain permanent and is comforting. It was an absolutely amazing experience, and now we completely understand why you were so crazy about your music. Thanks for showing us your love for Rock'n'Roll.

Love always,

Just so everyone knows that crew of scallywags that you hung out with growing up on City Island have never forgotten you.
Your name came up at the American Legion during the Giants/49'ers game on 1/22/12.
They remembered you as good natured, easy going and a terrific husband and father.
Grown men crying in their beer, what a site. Wish you were there.

I am extremely moved by this Legacy. James must have been a wonderful man in every way to everybody. I pray that I mean as much to my children and grand-children. James was obviously greatly loved by friends and family to have left behind such memories. I wish I had known him.
I came across this Web Address by accident as I am researching my family history and my g.g.grandfather was James Waring born about 1790. I have been so impressed by everything I have read! I send all my very best wishes to the family of James.

WARING FAMILY,

MY NAME IS RICHARD LAROSA. WE ARE RELATED. MY GRANDMOTHER ISABEL RICCARDI IS YOUR HUSBAND/DAD'S AUNT. SHE LIVES IN ASTORIA AND TELLS ME ALL ABOUT HIM, AS DOES MY MOTHER CAROL AND MY 2 AUNTS BARBARA AND PAT. I THINK OF YOUR HUSBAND/FATHER OFTEN, AND WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN HIM, BECAUSE FROM ALL I'VE READ ABOUT HIM, HE WAS A WONDERFUL MAN. I ALSO LOST A GOOD FRIEND IN THE TRADE CENTER. HE WAS A FIREMAN, AND I HAD NO IDEA I'D LOST A RELATIVE TOO UNTIL WEEKS LATER. MY HEART GOES OUT TO ALL OF YOU, AND I WISH I WOULD HAVE MET JAMES LONG AGO. MAYBE SOME DAY I CAN MEET ALL OF YOU. IN THE MEANTIME, KNOW THIS: YOU WILL DEFINTELY SEE HIM AGAIN ONE DAY, AND WHEN YOU DO, THE TIME THAT YOU WAITED WILL SEEM LIKE A BLINK OF AN EYE IN TIME AS WE KNOW IT NOW, AND YOU WILL HAVE HIM WITH YOU ALL AGAIN FOR AN ETERNITY. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

Jim,

I can't believe I went through two Thanksgivings, Anniversarys and Christmas' without you. I did the best I could for our girls but it will never be the same again without you. My best friend, my buddy will never wish me a Merry Christmas or shop with me on Christmas Eve, or sing with me on New Years Eve again. I miss everything about you and the fun you were. I will love you and miss you forever. You were the best husband and father anyone could ask for. I know you are watching over me and the girls.

To the family of James A. Waring,

I'm writing because of a very moving coincidence which happened on Sept 11th, 2002.

I'm a librarian with "The President's Own" US Marine Band, which was in NY playing at the site of the World Trade Center for families of 9-11 victims during a visit by the President. Among my duties that day was running after music which had blown away in the wind. During these times I also found 4 or 5 pictures which had blown off of the Circle of Remembrances a little way from the band (which I gave to a guard to return to where they belonged). After cleaning the mud off one picture, I found myself looking at a man who was born on the same day I was - August 2nd, 1952. This unexpected situation, on the date & occasion which it took place, was somewhat emotional for me, and I just wanted to express my sorrow at your loss, and the feeling that we're all closer than we know.

Sincerely, Kathy

Daddy- A year passed and I miss you more every day. We went down to Ground Zero, and we put a picture with flowers there. It was a sad day.

Maria,

Here we go again - everytime I think of you and all those beautiful girls, I start crying. Your family seems so loving, and I hurt so much for all of you. Jessica, are you the oldest? I'm so sorry for this tragedy. Are you all going to church still? I hope so - I'm sure Dad is watching all of you from heaven. Jamie, RiRi, all of you - please know that tens of thousands of Americans are praying for you daily. We love you, we feel helpless, but we know God is still in control and our prayers will help. Much love from Texas.

September 11, 2002

Today my school had a prayer service for the victims of 9/11. As part of that service every student received a bracelet with the name of a victim to wear for the day. Through out the day I formed images in my head of the man James A. Waring could be, but tonight when I read his biography, I realized the real him was far better then the one in my head. I know I cannot claim to know him, but he will now always be remembered by me as a loving father and husband. For what its worth, him and his families shall remain in my prayers. May God give us all strength.

My Dad was the best Dad in the world. He did anything for me. I had so many fun memories from the day I was born to September 11, 2001. When I was about 1-6 years old I was my Dad’s little girl. Then Jamie came and she was his little girl. I remember when I was 2 years old my dad always had done peek-a-boo with me. Then I called him my Boo. In the house he’d put on music and I’d dance with him. My Dad and Mom sang karaoke together. My Dad took me to the park a lot when I was little. He taught me how to go across the monkey bars. We went to church every Sunday. I miss the way we gave each other hugs and kisses when we gave the sign of peace in church. Last year, I was on a softball team for this church, American Martyrs. My Dad and I would practice all the time. He bought me to every game too. The day before September 11th, My Dad, Jamie and I played catch all night. Then we bought ice cream.

This year, in June I did a dance solo in tap. While I was dancing I saw my Dad smiling the whole time. He told me he was proud of me.

This summer, I had the best time ever. We went to Wildwood with my cousins. We went to the Amusement and Water Parks. I went on a lot of rides with my Dad. I remember going on a big blue water slide. You had to lie down on the slide and cross your arms. I went on the tube next to my Dad. He wouldn’t go down because he was sitting up. Then he lied down. I heard him screaming in his funny way while he was going down. I got down before him. When he came down he made the biggest splash ever. We also went on Shotgun Falls. On that ride you would go straight down into the pool. My Dad went down so fast that I couldn’t hear him screaming. Then he made another BIG splash into the pool. I also went swimming in the ocean with him every day we went to the beach. We swam in pools together too. We also went to Montauk. We went fishing on the Marlin V (5) boat. We had so much fun.

My Dad took us to a lot of Yankee games too. He took us to the games even though he was the biggest Chicago White Sox fan there could ever be. He would bring all his White Sox gear to embarrass us. We went to about 13 games with him. We only lost 2 of the games we went to.

Every night I gave my Dad a kiss goodnight. Maybe more than one kiss; but the night before, I didn’t get to give him a kiss or a hug. He was asleep and I didn’t want to wake him up. I am really upset about this. I really wish I could go back to September 11th and make sure he stayed home. I would have told him to tell his friends and other workers there to stay home that day too.

Daddy- I miss you and love you so much! Every body misses and loves you. I will always remember you. You are my HERO. I have a big space in my heart and it’s for you. I won’t see you for a long time, but I will see you again some day. Rest in Peace Daddy!

Love Always,

Your little Ri Ri Girl, Maria.

I got no sleep last night,
I’m too busy thinking of you.
I was trying to figure out how I could fix things,
But I can’t.
Life is hard without you,
Sometimes I don’t know what to do.
I always remember what happened that day,
It hurts bad.
I love you Daddy. You will always be in my heart.

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

JIMMY,

LIFE WITHOUT YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME FOR ANY OF US. WE ALL MISS YOU DEARLY AND YOU ARE AND ALWAYS WILL BE IN OUR THOUGHTS, PRAYERS AND HEARTS. THE MEMORIES WE HAVE OF US ALL WILL SOMEHOW KEEP US GOING, ALTHOUGH VERY DIFFICULT. THE FAMILY VACATIONS, HOLIDAYS (WHICH WILL NEVER BE THE SAME I MIGHT ADD) BUT WE KNOW YOU'LL BE THERE WITH US IN SPIRIT, YOU KNOW YOUR NUTTY SIS-IN-LAW BELIEVES THAT. REST ASSURED THAT WE ALL WILL BE THERE FOR MARIA AND THE GIRLS ALWAYS. NOT A DAY GOES BY JIMMY WHERE I THINK OF YOU AND REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD TIMES TOGETHER. I AM SO THANKFUL THAT WE WENT ON THOSE SUMMER VACATIONS THIS PAST SUMMER...NEVER KNOWING THE FATE THAT LIED AHEAD..THOSE MEMORIES WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN..LIKE ANGELA SAID, YOU WERE THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED TO MY SISTER, YOU GUYS HAD SUCH A GREAT RELATIONSHIP AND I WAS PROUD TO HAVE YOU AS A BROTHER-IN-LAW. YOU WERE THE BEST DAD TO THOSE 4 BEAUTIFUL GIRLS. YOU'VE DONE MORE THAN MOST DADS WOULD IN A LIFE TIME WITH THEM, AND I'M GRATEFUL THAT THEY WILL HAVE THOSE MEMORIES OF YOU TO CARRY ON. WE WILL ALL KEEP THOSE MEMORIES ALIVE FOREVER. JIMMY I WILL MISS YOUR FAMOUS GREETING, "HEY BABE..WHAT'S UP" BUT WILL ALWAYS HEAR IT IN MY HEART.

WE LOVE YOU AND WILL MISS YOU FOREVER..UNTIL WE ALL MEET AGAIN...

REST PEACEFULLY JIMMY...

LOVE, YOUR SIS-IN-LAW, LAURA

Happy Anniversary to my Big Brother. I never thought I could miss anyone so much Jim. I'm so glad we had so many good times together... I'll always have my memories and I hope to share so many of them with the girls. The kids are always talking about you and I think thats good. Mom is on the ropes but is still hanging tough. I hope you know that Bob & I will always be there for Maria and the girls. Love you little sister, MJ

I was a childhood friend of Jimmy Waring and have many fond memories of out times together. Jimmy was always an enthusiastic athlete despite a severe case of childhoold asthma. After playing sports all day, Jimmy's Dad, Dick Waring, brought us to professional wrestling matches where we watched stars like Bruno Sammartino and Haystacks Calhoun do their thing. I also remember many of the debates Jimmy and I had about Baseball. Jimmy was a Chicago White Sox fan who idolized their then center fielder Jim Landis. I was a devout Yankee fan who of course felt that Mickey Mantle was the better player.

Although we both went to Mount Saint Michael Academy together, we drifted apart as we got older. I last saw him at a Grammar School reunion for St. Mary Star of the Sea probably some time in the late 1980's.

I will always remember the fun times we had together and what a great kid he was. I write this with a very heavy heart and offer my sincere condolences to his wife, kids and remaining family members.

I saw your story about your husband and father on TV tonight. I am so sorry you lost such a wonderful husband and father. Cherish those beautiful memories and may God bless you all.
