In Memory!

Dear Igor, 15 years passed, but memories of you aren't fading...
You were teaching a class of kids from all Baku an art of programming, back in 1989-1993 (I was lucky to be one them). Your incredible charisma made every single kid love you, and your talent of deep understanding and explaining things helped many of us to love programming and CS for entire lifetime.
When 9/11 happened, I've written you an email to ask if you and your family are OK, but got no answer. Since you've changed your name, it took me few years to find out you've been there, and it made me crying openly... The good die young, know it for real now
Rest in Peace, Igor, and wishing all the best to your family

I worked with Daniel as a Software Developer at the Bank of New York for several years starting in 1996. We were part of a small, close team and produced a very well received "Disbursement Workstation" for Bank clients. It was a Windows application and Daniel was the chief architect.
I will always remember Daniel as a motivated, friendly, professional with a warm heart.
A few things stand out in my memory of him. First, he was devoted to his daughter. He kept a prominent picture of her on his desk. It is visible in the photo that I am providing. Second, I lent him a CD Recording of an album by the Cape Verdes Island singer, Cesaria Evora. The title of the album was, "Cesária". He loved that album so much that he played it over and over again. He kept that CD many months before returning it. Finally, he helped to foster my lifelong interest in the Russian language.
Daniel left the Bank to move on to better things. We all regarded him as one of the best, destined for much success.
We are all left poorer from his absence, but richer by his example.

My name is Irina Kasparova. Igor and I studed together at school #48 in Baky. He was really intellegent and good, he got only exellent marks. He had never distingaushed himself among others classmats, he was friendly and humorous. I think, that his parents in that time have already proud their son, Igor was a good example for his little sister-Laura...
I heared and whatched on TV about event on 11 September 2001 year. But, i found out, that Igor was in this place few days ago...And i was so sad...I'm really sorry, that his life was torn off so early and he hadn't time for so much more...
Im sincere express one's sympathy for his parents, sister, family, which lost favorite son, brother,, husband and father.
Memory about him always will be in our hearts. And also, in memory of other people, who hate terrorism, which injustice deprive the richest of person-his life....
Rest in peace, dear...

Septemper 11, 2001. I was alone at home in India.Sudenly - shoking news.I could not do anything but watching again and again and again and listening to the korrespondents. What happend there - was terrible, but I didn't know at that time that you - my friend, my classmate are dying there at that time. I came to know about it only today, almost 5 years after it happend! We studied togeder in shcool no.48 (Baku) in 9th and 10 class. You were so joyful, so kind and talented! I just wont be able to forget you! I didn't cry on 11 september 2001, but now - my tears are falling down and I cant stop them. Your parents lost their only son, your sister (Laura) - her only brother. I am so sorry. My heartly condolenses to them and your wife.

For us, my wife and me, you were our neighbor, friend, lovely gentle person with a big bright smile. It's always been a good time for me talking to you either while riding a train back home together or at the playground where our kids enjoyed playing games. Always felt so much respect to you. And then at these black terrible September days we so desperately hoped you were alive, it's just a mistake, injustice, it couldn't have happened. I was crying in anguish and pain.
And still our hearts are in pain, we can't ever forget you, because it was so much to share and joy with you. You were a great wonderfull man. We are proud of you and always remember you!

For the United In Memory quilt project, I chose to create a quilt block in your honor. In creating your block, I found it a very emotional experience, even though I had never met you or your family. I pray for you and your family.

I studied in Azerbaijan State University, in Baku, with Igor Ilkanayev, somewhat back in 1985. Was it you or your brother? You look so like him...
I look at the picture, a wonderful young man, a beautiful daughter...
I do not know - did I know you personally or not, but you will be always remembered, by me, by Rauf Bektashi from Australia (who told me about you), by many other people in Azerbaijan, in Russia, in other countries, who knew you, who read about you, and who looked at your picture.
Rest in peace, and may God bless you family.

You came to my office on Albemarle Road with your family years ago, and from the beginning I thought – such wonderful people! Then I met you many times on the train, and we shared jokes and stories. I saw your beautiful daughter couple of times – you were bringing her to the kindergarten. Once or twice I met your parents on Ocean Parkway and talked to them – they were so proud of you!
I knew that you worked on some high floor, but hoped you were late that day… Couple of months ago V. Ulanov (you worked with him for couple of years) told me... I didn’t want to know, you were still alive for me...
I’m sitting in my office at WFC just across the street, looking at your picture on my screen, and crying for you…You were so smart, so nice, so gentle, so full of love to your family, so alive…
I’m trying to tell about you as many people as I can.
I will never forget you smile, I will never forget you!

Daniel, you were the first person I filled a form for your relatives to know where you were, on 9-12-02... They had troubles reading it in English, so I translated it into Russian for them. With this, a translator service desk was started which ended up helping thousands more. Although I never met you in person (I saw your picture today for the first time), I share your family's feelings, almost one year after you went to be with God.

America Cries
We see your sorrow-
and our hearts cry....
We can not erase your pain
but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-
-the American people-
are beside you.
We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I just wanted to say that you will be remembered by a stanger who never met you. I tried as hard as I could to help your wife during her time of need & I just couldn't rest until I found your picture on my computer. I cried for you & your family that day. I pray for your family now.
