Atsushi Shiratori Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
New York Adrenaline
Atsushi Shiratori was not a New Yorker by birth. But he was a New Yorker to the bone.

A trader of dollar/yen options at Cantor Fitzgerald and one of the firm's partners, Mr. Shiratori, 36, was addicted to the city. Sure, he was passionate about his job, and so obsessed with the stock market that he once spent a two-week vacation in a day- trading salon, buying and selling stocks.

But it was New York that really started his engines. Peter Douglas, a friend who sat with Mr. Shiratori on the trading desk a few years ago, said: "He loved, loved, loved New York. Everything about it. The pulse of it, the intensity, the energy. He loved looking sharp, having the style. Going out to dinner with friends, nights on the town. Sucking it in, 24 hours a day."

Magali Somers lived with Mr. Shiratori for the last three years. He recently helped her open a furniture restoration shop. "He had a huge social life and he would always live for the present," she said. "He would always enjoy the moment, and that's what impressed me about him the most."

Dear Atsushi,

I was very moved by the "A Dream for Kabul" documentary about your father Haruhiro Shiratori and his valiant efforts to turn such a horrific tragedy into something positive.
Thoughts and prayers to you, your Dad, you Mom, your family and friends.

Dear Atsushi's family and friends:
I met Atsushi in 1988 at UCSC, during the summer term. I was just 18 years old and it was one of my first times away from Michigan. I was shy in many ways; and when I tried to fit in, it was often a struggle. Atsushi was so gracious to me. We lived in the same dorm, called 'Porter'. He went out of his way to introduced himself to me, was very accepting of my introverted nature, invited me to take part in activities, including joining groups of people in his dorm room, made me feel at ease when I was very anxious, and even found me to be funny in my own way. A wonderfully generous, liberal, warm-hearted person. I searched his name a few years ago, curious about what he is doing, and saw the tribute pages to him, and became so saddened. And I'm so sad for his friends and family too. I remember when I asked what he was studying, and he, true to his unique style, said 'Econ!' very quickly and with a big smile and tons of enthusiasm. And I then remember his mention of how he would like to move to New York City.

Atsushi, I just heard your name read at the memorial this morning. Although it has been 20 years, I recognized your name immediately. I have only good memories of you and our brief friendship in Santa Cruz. I'm so very saddened to learn your life was cut short in this way. I only remember you as funny, charming and sincere. Always with that mischievious twinkle in your eyes. May you rest in eternal peace knowing that you left fond memories with those who were blessed to have known you. My heart breaks for your family and loved ones. Peace and love be with you. Patti

Yesterday I just completed the 18-21 August 2011 10th anniversary motorcycle ride with Americas 9-11 foundation. This is the only ride that stops in all 3 crash sites: Shanksville, Pa, Washington D.C's Pentagon, and Ground Zero NYC. This year each rider was matched to someone lost that tragic day. I was given the priviledge to ride for Atsushi. What a great ride and moving experience.

My dear friend, I only found out about your destiny a few months ago and I am still in shock. I was often thinking of you and wondering, how you were doing. You left this world too early! I will keep you in very dear and fun memory, Santa Cruz where our friendship started, then N.Y. and Washington DC, London and Milano...wonderful memories. Thank you so much.
I would very much appreciate, if friends or family of yours could contact me. I would love to find out, how your life was, after we have seen us the last time in 95.
My thoughts are with you and your family and all your friends. Love, Ursula Hardmeier Lawrence, from Switzerland, living in the Caribbean

Atshushi,

It's the DAY of the year when all the pain comes back to us. You left us so soon! They just called your name for the memorial on television and it's so emotional.

I wanted to tell you that i went to Japan with Manu and Pierre (his brother) in June and i saw your mom and your uncle, and they are so warm and charming as ever. I loved Japan very much (pictures of my trip are enclosed).

Your friends all over the world (US, France, Japan, Italy, Germany, Belgium, England etc,,.) will say a pray for you and your family.

I miss you very muuch!

Atush,

It's your old friend and volley ball team mate.
Last time i saw you was september 10, 2001. We finished a game and we took a cab from Lincoln center to go home. I am probably the last person who saw you. I remember that during the game, you knee hurt. I should had broke you knee so you would have not gone to work the next day...
I am also thinking about you tonight in particular. While i was switching chanel, i end up watching a movie that i did not want to see. UNITED 93. Memories are coming back to my mind and i am upset.
I am also going to Japan in June, i will try my best to go and see your mom. Your uncle is sending present to Adrien every year.

We miss you very very much,,,

Dear Atsushi,

I will treasure our times in Santa Cruz forever. Your love of life was so very special. It truly seems like just yesterday when we would hang out with Kevin and Josh and anyone else who wanted to play. I look at my photos with great fondness. Thank you for all of the smiles that you still bring to me. Much love and peace to you.

I can't believe you're no longer with us. I will remember the summers we spent in Santa Cruz with Josh, Ethan, Margaret and Meredith fondly. You were always the life of the party--even though I never believed you were the Japanese Clint Eastwood, as you always claimed. You touched many lives and lived life to the fullest. I will miss you my friend.

We are so very sorry for your loss of Atsushi. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
