Jenny Wong Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
A Reunion Too Soon
Jenny Low Wong came to live with an aunt in New York City when she was 12 years old, because her family in Venezuela thought there was more opportunity for her here. And there was, although she ended up finding success by looking back at the part of the world she came from.

Ms. Wong, at 25, had just been promoted to assistant vice president of Marsh & McLennan, in the market information group. Ms. Wong, fluent in English, Spanish and Cantonese, was in charge of analyzing the Latin American market.

Her parents were originally from China, said her sister, Mary Low Wong, and moved to Venezuela as children with their parents. One by one, their three children came to the United States. Ms. Wong and her brother, William, planned to go to San Francisco, where Mary Low Wong moved this summer, to spend Thanksgiving together. Instead, the family had an unplanned reunion after Sept. 11. Ms. Wong's parents came from Venezuela, and her maternal grandmother from Hong Kong.

Jenny and I went to school together in Caracas, Colegio Madre Matilde. We lived in the same neighborhood, Alto Prado. I remember her as a clever girl. We used to have fun! I'm sure she is in a better place right now watching over her loved ones!

Dear Jenny,

There isn't a day that passes that I don't think of you. I will always remember you as the sweet, fun-loving person who greeted everyone with a smile. Thank you for all the memories filled with laughter, tears, worries and good eating! Most of all, thank you for giving me the honor of having you as my friend.

My deepest sympathy to your family.

Jenny and I were friends who met at Stern, our college. After college we would get together every couple of months, maybe once a month in the summer, not often but each time was special. Jenny was a sweet and kind person with an innocent outlook on life. I thank God for the warmness of knowing her. She introduced me to paella and sangria at a Spanish restaurant on University Place we would go to. For all of these and many more memories, Jenny will always hold a special place within my heart. Her passing has reminded me how important it is to hold life and those we care about in close view of our hectic busy lives. Jenny as you have ascended from earth with your angelic spirit, may you now rest in peace among the other angels of heaven.

Jenny and I met at a Christmas in July charity event, painting the home of an elder woman in Harlem. We both worked for Marsh but in different departments/locations. We meshed so easily that after the charity event we met on a number of occasions just to spend time together and catch up. Jenny was a wonderful human being. It saddens me think a light so bright was extinguished so soon. I miss you Jen.

I am a quilter and made a quilt block in memory of Jenny. It will go in the Memorial Quilt Project a quilt similar to the Aids Quilt. I chose Jenny to make a block for because I work at a high school where many of our students have backgrounds similar to Jenny's. I get to know these girls so well that they come back each year, call on the phone or e-mail me with messages to keep me updated. They have enriched my life so much, I know I have made a difference in theirs because I helped them achieve their dream as well as that of their parents. I am a college and career counselor at a low income high school. I liked what I read about Jenny and felt like I knew her because of all the Chinese girls I count as friends. I decided not to make a quilt block but a miniature quilt for her block. It is called "Chinese Coins" and all of the fabrics are Asian prints. The paper lantern on the quilt with her name is symbolic of her love of life and fun, it is to light her way where ever she has gone. She sounds like she was the light of many of her friends, co-workers and family members lives so the lantern also symbolizes her life.

Her life force and love of life will live on in the quilt project as a reminder to all of us that life is precious and we should value each day. I wish I knew how to add a picture but I don't, I would add the miniature quilt picture to this site. This is the web site of the project United in Memory you can see all of the blocks that have been posted. Once the block has been posted the name of the person the quilt block is in memory of gets posted as well and you can search for the individual and view the block that way. It is quite amazing how many are now on the web. Jenny's will soon be there it is now finished and ready to mail. My heart goes out to Jenny's family and friends. Be good to yourselves.

I went to college with Jenny. Jenny was such a sweet, quiet, thoughtful person. She was so much fun and so concientious about her classes at college. She was willing to do anything for anyone, anytime. We all miss her.

My deepest sorrow. Jenny was a good friend. I will miss the good times we spent at school, after work, and our short lunch get-togethers. Jenny was fun and full of life and will forever be missed.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
