Marcia Hoffman Obituary

Listen Well, Offer Sweets

Some Twizzlers? Girl Scout cookies? A fistful of jelly beans? Marcia Hoffman, an assistant vice president at eSpeed, a division of Cantor Fitzgerald, kept a bowl on her desk, her sweet invitation to chew over personal and professional problems.

Sure, you could take the former child-welfare worker and probation officer out of public service, but you could not take the gifted listener out of the woman who in her 30's switched to a career in computers. Mrs. Hoffman, 52, retained her compassionate smile and easy approachability, which is why workers called her even at home in Brooklyn.

She was a doer as well as a listener, a gym rat and a reader, recounted her husband, Jim. They traveled widely, later with their daughter, Lara, but also inhaled the curiosities and cultural delights of New York City. Mrs. Hoffman eagerly attended concerts by Andrés Segovia and U2.

Still, she always made time to fuss over someone. Worried about the families of colleagues who were being laid off, she had not been sleeping well. So on Sept. 11, she just went to work early. "Wherever she is," her husband said, "I know she is worrying about the other Cantor families now."

I knew Marcia from the NYSC at Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. I and another regular waited with Marcia to get into Loi's Step class every Saturday morning (see Loi's entry below). She would give me advice on certain gym topics. Miss that. The voice of reason. She also took the Thursday night spin at Cobble with me as well. Always the nicest person. One of the best parts of going to Cobble Hill.

I donated blood today and was given a blue spruce tree to plant in memory of Marcia Hoffman. "He who plants a tree, plants a hope..." Lucy Larcon. I will always think Marcia as I watch this tree grow.

Marcia took my Saturday morning classes at New York Sports Club in Cobble Hill Brooklyn for many years. She was the most wonderful and special person. I remember her always waiting on the packed line to class reading her paper...always with the greatest smile and hello for me every Saturday morning. She LOVED the gym..and I absolutely loved having her in class. Such a pleasure to see how much she enjoyed her workouts. 10 years later, and I will never forget you Marcia. You are still missed!!!

I'm in the US Air Force Reserve on temporary assignment at Lackland AFB, TX. This morning at 0530, I participated in an organized rememberance run, where myself and about 1500 other servicemen/women wore the names of 9-11 victims for a 3 mile run, followed by a ceremony. I was given the name of Marcia Hoffman.
I enlisted in the military in 2002, out of sense of duty after 9-11. I was honored to participate and wear her name, 7 years after 9-11 started my military career. I'm still in the military, and my sole motivation, along with my comrades, is to help ensure this dosen't happen again.
I'm sure Marcia was a special person, and you have my condolences, God Bless.

Dear Marcia,

It's been seven difficult years since we lost you. Whenever I walk or drive by your apartment and see your beloved Mexican pottery, books and plants, I still get a pain in my heart. I was truly blessed to have you as my closest, dearest friend and confidante for 25 years. You were really more sister than friend. Not a day goes by when I do not think of you. All of our lives are so diminished by the lack of you, especially Jim, Lara, and Lewis.

Love forever,

Gail

Dear Jim and Lara Hoffman,

For almost a year I have been praying daily for Marcia Hoffman's family not ever knowing if she was married or had any children. (It may seem silly, but I know that God knows who her family members are).I chose her name on a Mercy Band to wear and labor in prayer for her family. The problem is that I do not have a computer and when I could get to one I could never find any information on her, which was very frustrating. I was so elated to find this website tonight and a picture even!!

A "Mercy B.A.N.D.", which stands for "Bearing Another's Name Daily", is a bracelet worn as a tribute to those who perished on 9/11 and a reminder to pray for their families and loved ones. Now that I know your names, I will be able to pray for you specifically.

I have no words that are sufficient enough to express the sadness that I feel for your loss, only reassurance that God, our Creator, can sustain you through this time.

Psalm 57 says, "Have mercy on me, oh God, have mercy on me, for in You my soul takes refuge.

I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.

I cry out to God Most High, to God, Who fulfills His purpose in me, rebuking those who hotly pursue me; God sends His love and faithfulness."

I will pray that He will be your refuge and comfort.

If you would like for me to search for a bracelet with Marcia's name on it, please contact me through the "borrowed" email address I have listed, I will be happy to look for one for both of you.

Thank you for having done this memorial, it was an answer to my prayers. God bless you.

Hello. I'm a Junior at Madison High School in San Antonio, Tx. On September 11, 2002, in honor of those who lost their lives, angels were handed out to every student with victim's names on them. I happened to get Marcia's name. I was hoping to get the families address and send the angel to them, but I didn't know how to get a hold of it. I just thought I'd write and tell the family that from the moment I got Marcia's name, I prayed for you. I will continue to pray for you daily. God bless!

In Him,

I am Marcia's daughter Lara. I would like to thank all those who wrote, for their kind words. These words have meant a great deal to me and my family. I read these words for the first time on 9/11/02, they have helped me through a long and trying day. Per Barbara Frye's request, my mother's birthday is April 1st, I would like to thank her on behalf of my family for honoring my mother's memory.

Our local grocery store has the "In Memory" program; I just picked up a card with Marcia's name on it. The card suggested I spend some time or make a donation on 9.11.02 in her memory. I checked the internet and was excited to find out Marcia enjoyed helping people and was also a reader.

As a teacher, I had recently received information about applying for a reading grant. Because of the "In Memory" program, I planned to spend some time this Wednesday, in creating the application and dedicate the time and subsequent event(s) to her.

Note:

The grant program is sponsored by Starbuck's and the Univ of Washington athletic dept. A local pediatrician has committed time to the "reading event(s) and I plan to ask many local professionals and citizens to commit some time to this reading mentoring program for local school children and their parents.

May peace be with you,

sincerely, Barbara Frye

PS I would love to know Marcia's actual birthday. Thank you.

Marcia,

What a pleasure it was to have been able to work with you. To all who new her they can attest to her personality as being friendly, humorous, generous and genuine. I count myself lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and work with her, short as it was. And THANK YOU, for being so patient with me when I had so much to learn.

To Marcia's Family my condolences for your tragic loss. My heart hurts knowing I can't see her smile.

I can hardly type this... Marcia deserved so much more then this. I worked very close to her for many years and its the little things that make me cry the most... 11 months is meaningless. The thoughts of me coming by to have a chocolate twisler and chat and if she didnt have any she was sure to go and buy some and visit me in my office... she always kept them for me.

Marcia you are a shining Angel and always will be.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
