Edward Schunk Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
His Turn to Wait

"He would be walking this John Wayne walk," she said. "He was the best-looking man getting off that train, because he would just glow."

On her way to work each morning, Lisa Schunk would drop off her husband, Edward W. Schunk, at the Baldwin, N.Y., train station in time for the 6:20 to Manhattan. Her car would be there each night as well, waiting as the 6:05 pulled in. Though life was hectic at Cantor Fitzgerald, where her husband worked as a broker, he stepped off the train as if his day were just beginning.

"He would be walking this John Wayne walk," she said. "He was the best-looking man getting off that train, because he would just glow."

Mrs. Schunk spent many of the hours in between preparing meals as a corporate chef. Yet she was still delighted to serve up her husband's favorite Italian dinner by candlelight when they got home. Dessert was typically chocolate pudding or cookie- dough ice cream. "He'd always get three scoops, and I'd say, `get one-and-a-half,' " she recalled — not that he listened.

They had no children, but at 54, he was often the only adult using the slide at his country club's pool, and he played Santa for his eight nieces at Christmas. No pillow was necessary, thanks to all that ice cream.

His wife says that he must be in heaven. "I know he's waiting for me until we meet again," she said.

I don't know if the family will see this but I wanted to let them know that this past Sept. 11th I climbed 37 floors here in Phoenix AZ in memory of all who lost their lives that day. Each climber pinned a name of a victim and climbed in their honor and I was given Mr.Schunk. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

While i am not sure that I am related to Edward Schunk, I am stuck by the resemblance of Edward to my brother Thomas Schunk of Altoona, PA. Two of my uncles, Henry, and Charles and my father Arthur were born and raised in NYC. MY grandmother Edith nee Pyne and grandfather Henry Valentine Schunk both were born and raised in NYC. Henry worked as a stage electrician for the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1920's and 1930's. I would appreciate knowing whether any family connection exists. My condolences on the loss of Edward.

13 years...numerous graduations, birthday celebrations, Christmas gatherings, weddings and babies. All of which you aren't here with us to celebrate. But I know you are, in spirit. I am thankful that I still to this day dream of you, and I share those dreams with those you love often. Today in my classroom it is "Uncle Eddie Day" and every single one of my students know how I had the best uncle around. Hands down. Love you.

Uncle Eddie,
All I can say is I miss you so much and not a day goes by that I don't think about you. You are always with me and know that you are watching down on me, protecting me in that way you always did; like when you knew that Sue and I were having parties at the house when Mom and Dad were away, which they still don't know! I find comfort in knowing ow much you loved us and will always remember all great times we had and will miss all the great times we have missed. I love you always.

Always thinking of you my favorite Uncle Eddie. Not just this time of year.....but it is pretty intense right now. Tomorrow I am having a little gathering of friends. I am calling it a "Joy Celebration" celebrating that we are here, connected, friends in community, loving one another and being grateful. We'll be having bubbles and red wine and lots of chocolate cake and I will be celebrating your spirit the entire time.......I really miss you so very much. It never really lessens.
Lisa -- I have NO clue if you read this page, but if you do, I'd love to re-connect as I miss you.
Love to all who had the most awesome chance to know and love Uncle Eddie.

I didn't know Mr.Schunk. I'd received his name through The National September 11 Memorial and I'm glad I did. After reading his Tribute he seemed to be fun, hard working Man that is loved by his wife Lisa and his Family. God Holds a special Place for a person that is loved by so many. My prayers go out to Edward Schunk's Family and Friends. also to the other 2,985 innocent people that died on 9/11/01..

We knew each other in all through Covert Ave. to Sewanhaka H.S. As the years passed we saw each other at our high school reunions. You had a great sense of humor and always made everyone laugh. You are so missed by everyone and the memories will last forever.

When we met on a bench in the caddy yard of the Garden City Country Club in June of 1961, little did I know it was the beginning of a great friendship of 40 years. From that day on, you always made me laugh even when you were waxing me on the golf course. I loved you like a brother and I still do.

Was feeling sad dancing in class this morning and then remembered YOU truly LIVED this life and wouldn't want me sad and missing you - you'd want me celebrating my life, this life and so I turned the volume UP, opened my heart and BOOGIED. I love you and I am sending prayers into the world for community and connection. I miss you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
