Fred Scheffold Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
After the Shift Ended
Over dinner, Fred Scheffold, chief of the 12th Battalion in Harlem, liked to laugh about fighting fires. Like the time he fell off a fire escape or the time he rescued the skinny man and left the fat one for his partner. "He never told us the bad stuff," said Kim Scheffold, a daughter. "He loved going into fires and rescuing people and he loved his men."

At home in Piermont, in Rockland County, Chief Scheffold skied, golfed, ran marathons and read everything. He also sculpted logs with a chainsaw, painted furniture in crazy- quilt colors and taught his three daughters to reach high and not give up.

His shift had just ended when the station alarm rang Tuesday morning but he jumped into the truck with the others. At 1 World Trade Center, he pushed through crowds to the staircase, intending to climb to the top. The building rumbled. "Doesn't sound good," he said to a friend. But he kept on pushing forward.

Freddie is always in my thoughts and prayers, especially today on the anniversary of 9/11. I have been playing senior softball for 13 years now, and when I go to the out field, I always talk to Freddie . Somehow, it makes me feel better to think that he is with me.

Uncle Harold passed this July, I spent hours looking thru old photos. I found so many of you and Uncle Claude and the whole family. I know there were trying times over the years but its evident there was much love, happiness and good times as a family. Dad and I spent a lot of time talking about the old neighborhood and I listend to stories about you, Dad was laughing so hard, seemed liked you were always smiling and living life to the fullest. Please continue to watch over all of us. God bless you and your family.

I was last with Freddie at my brother Ray's funeral in N.Y.C. After the services, Freddie, my daughter Allison and I walked with Freddie to the fire house where he had parked his car. It was such a beautiful day and Freddie was upbeat and just so much fun to be around. This was a month before he gave his life to save others. I am always thinking of him . I 've always thought that he is the nicest person I've ever met.

Another year has passed and here we are; and there you are. Still smiling down on us and letting us know you're there. What tragically happened shows us that life is too precious too waste...to the person who always gave so much to others....I still miss you like it was yesterday. And wish I'd been strong enough to be able to talk to you more often...rest well.

Dear Mr. Scheffold:

This year I will get to see your firehouse and hear wonderful stories about you. Your family misses you every day, and they are an amazing legacy and tribute to you. You were a great dad.

I will never forget! The courage and sacrifice it takes to do what Firefighters and Police Officers do everyday makes them all heroes in my eyes. I was deployed outside our country when 9/11 happened and it broke my heart not to be there to defend her. Please know that I will continue to honor all those lives that were affected both living and deceased, September 11,2001.

Gone but not forgotten. I had the pleasure of growing up with Mr. Scheffold's daughters in our little village, enjoying fun times with them as part of the Blue Phantoms marching band. Although I didn't know him well, I always admired his daughters' beauty, class and kindness. Those traits are not something one is born with. They are traits formed by fine parents and loving family. I know he was a fine man by the job he held and family he raised and I thank him for not how he died but how he lived. Peace and God Bless America.

I can't believe it, two years gone by.Not so long ago, i could look out my window and see Fred, working on one of his new projects! I had been Fred's neighbor for over 9 years. I am 15 now, years have gone by, but he is still in my mind. I can never forget the person who first taught me how to climb a tree. It was on his front yard tree, i was so scard, but i knew if i would fall he would be there for me; he was always there. I was the neighbor who had the two dogs that could not stop barking. When i would let one loose he would always run to Fred. Fred loved my dog Buttons. Buttons would run to Fred, like as if he was a big strip of bacon. His tail would wag a the speed of light and no force in the world could pry Buttons away from Fred. A month before 9/11, my dog Buttons died at the age of 10, i could never forget the day i came back from camp, i looked a Fred and he said to me, "He's in puppy heaven now".Fred loved that dog.Fred taught me many things, how to climb a tree, how not to paint a chair. When ever i had homework problems it was always, "I'll be at Freds mom".Every Halloween he would put up this great pumpkin, painted onto a piece of wood, and when Christmas would roll around he would turn it around and it would be Santa Claus! Fred had the greatest imagination. He could turn the simplest piece of wood into a grand hotel for the birds!

On one of my birthdays Fred gave me a present i'll never forget, a sun catcher set. Till this day, i have that set, one cather in particular was painted just for him. I never had the time to give it to him now my time is up, so every summer when the sun is high, you can see that sun cather in my window facing Fred's Home.

I will always miss you Fred

Many years ago, I shared a passion for running. I received nylon running shorts with the FDNY logo that Fred used to wear from his wife Joan. Although I never wore them and now, the elastic is tired and stretched in the waistband.. I keep these shorts folded in my sock drawer on top to remind me how precious and fragile that life is. Having this momento of someone who was lost in a senseless day of tragedy reminds me that I should treasure every moment and take every opportunity to enjoy the company of my friends and loved ones.

I treasure this blue pair of shorts. It is a terrible shame that Fred hasn't been around his family and friends for the past year and a half. He would be impressed at how brave Joan has been and how adorable his new grand-daughter looks.

I received a white wooden cross with Fred's name on it at a candle light vigil for all the victims of the 9/11 tragedy. I looked for one with a firefighter's name on it as I, too, am a firefighter. I never had the chance to meet Fred, but I know he was a great guy. I will be thinking and praying for him and his family. I am also carrying his name inside my fire helmet, so that from this day forward I will carry on the traditions of the fire service and the job we do in his honor.

God Bless Fred and his family.

I just received my 911-bracelet with BC Fred C. Scheffold's name on it. I will wear it in honor of him and his bravey on that horrible day here in NY. I am very honored and so very proud to wear Fred Scheffold's name on my wrist. Firefighters are true heros. Thank you, JoAnn

To the Scheffold family,

My name is Lea Ann Parsley and I am an Olympic athlete with the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation. I was recently honored to attend the home opener game for the NY Yankees and was given a 9.11 bracelet to wear down on the field in a pregame ceremony. I feel so fortunate to have been given Fred's name on my bracelet.

We were also presented these bracelets during the opening ceremonies and I received the name of Robert Regan from Ladder 118.

I can't tell you how grateful the athletes have been to be given such an opportunity to show our respect and appreciation to the men and women of the FDNY.

It has been my honor to wear Fred and Robert's names in tribute to the ultimate sacrifice they made.

May God bless you and keep you.

I knew Fred in a very small way. But his humor and his kindness and his love for what he did and his interest in life always came shining through. I'm so sorry for his family's loss. My condolences to them.......and my thanks to Fred for being a hero who died, just doing what he did.

I volunteered to embroider a name on an American Flag Quilt which is being made here in New York City in memory of the New York firefighters and was just given Fred'name. I'm so delighted that there was a photo and tribute in the NY Times Portraits of Grief so I could get to know something about "my firefighter." My love and condolences to Fred's family. They should also know that there will be a quilt square for Fred in another large cooperative project.

We thank Fred for dedicating his life to help others. The world needs more people with such a caring heart as he must have had. Thank you for sharing his story with the world. Some of it made me laugh a little so Fred is still touching people's lives in a gentle way. We are extremely sorry for your loss of Fred. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

Dear Joan, Kim, Karen, Claudette and other family members:

It was an honor to have known such a loving an kind-hearted person like your beloved Fred. Although we didn't spend a lot of time with him, the time we did showed what an open-minded and humourous guy that he was.

We will always cherish the laughs that we shared with Fred at Bishops in Tappan at the end of December 1996.

The memories that Fred leaves behind are precious and we pray that God will comfort your hearts from this tremendous loss. He was a true hero who cared about other people first and he made the ultimate sacrifice.. he surrendered his life to protect and save his fellow man.

With much love...
