Martin Niederer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 17, 2001.
Selfless and Self-Disciplined
Martin Niederer, a gifted athlete, was an all- star point guard while growing up in western New Jersey. He was a point guard in life, too, bringing a passionate yet disciplined and selfless kind of style to everything he did.

After playing basketball at the University of Vermont, Mr. Niederer, 23, began working last year as a securities trader at Cantor Fitzgerald. He loved his job, always showed up at 7 a.m. on the dot, and always worked long hours, said his mother, Marilyn.

He was still dating his college girlfriend. He called a tiny apartment in Hoboken home. And he loved to play host to friends and family. In June, his parents, who now live in Richmond, Va., visited, and Mr. Niederer had scouted out the martini bars in Lower Manhattan. His father loves martinis. Martin found the perfect place in SoHo.

No matter how busy he was, he conducted his life with precision and aplomb. The day after the attacks, Mr. Niederer's parents visited his apartment in Hoboken. They found the bed made, the pillows fluffed.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 10, 2001.

Martin Niederer, 23, basketball all-star On the basketball court, Martin Stewart Niederer, 23, was a standout.

He led his team at North Hunterdon Regional High School to many victories before he graduated in 1995. Then it was on to the University of Vermont, where he played more outstanding basketball.

But a field trip to Wall Street in his sophomore year would give Mr. Niederer a new focus, said his father, Charles. "He decided he wanted to move from basketball to the business world," Niederer said of his son, who was killed Sept. 11 in the World Trade Center.

After graduating from college in 1999, Mr. Niederer fulfilled his dream by landing a job on Wall Street at National Discount Brokers.

About a year ago, Mr. Niederer, described by his family as "very outgoing with a tremendous charisma," was recruited by Cantor Fitzgerald.

A securities trader from Hoboken, Mr. Niederer arrived in his office in Tower One early Sept. 11. He sent out an e-mail to a friend around 7:45 a.m. "That was the last anyone heard from him," said Charles Niederer.

Mr. Niederer was born in Teaneck and raised in Maplewood, where he developed a passion for basketball. The family moved to Wisconsin when Mr. Niederer was about 10 years old, then returned to New Jersey four years later, relocating to Clinton Township.

"Martin Niederer drove the length of the court and dropped in a lay-up with three seconds left to bring North Hunterdon a 49-48 boys' basketball victory over Phillipsburg in the final of the Easton Tournament last night in Easton, Pa.," according to a Star-Ledger sports story written Dec. 12, 1994. He was named to the newspaper's All-West Jersey Boys Basketball team in 1995.

Besides basketball, Mr. Niederer liked golfing.

He maintained close ties to his family, having had dinner with his parents and brother in Hasbrouck Heights on Saturday. This weekend, Mr. Niederer was scheduled to be on vacation with his family in Hilton Head, N.C.

He is survived by his parents, Charles W. and Marilyn Niederer of Richmond, Va., and a brother, Brian Charles Niederer of Atlanta.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in the Annandale section of Clinton Township. Another Mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 823 Park Ave., Richmond, Va.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund, 101 Park Ave., 45th Floor, N.Y., 10178. Attention: Philip Ginsberg or call 1-800-446-0500.

,TWENTY-ONE YEARS MARTY, AND WE DON'T FORGET. I graduated highschool with Martin... North Hunterdon, Class of 1995. and we were teammates on our Varsity Basketball team in 1995. He was an allstar ''All West Jersey '' pointguard. Best basketball player I ever played with. Biggest smile, & the NICEST person. Im so glad I got to see you one more time in Hoboken that Summer day before the Yankees game. It was good to sit and talk with you. You were as kind as ever. Loosing Martin on 9-11 was a big loss. It has been eighteen years today and yet it feels as if only a moment has passed. I loved going at you on the court, truth be told guard wise you were the only competition I came across. You played hard but clean much the same way you lived your life. Time passes and I know you would take great satisfaction in knowing how much you are still missed and loved. Rest easy, my friend.

Marty - its been 18 years since Freshman Year UVM Fall of 95. Can't forget your no-look passes during night run clowning around on the courts outside Harris Millis or your hustle in the Patrick. You loved the game and were electric - laughing, smiling, with a rascal's twinkle in your eyes. So stoked when you stopped by Smith & Wollensky's with your family for dinner that night 12 years ago, a few weeks before you left us. I brought that bottle of wine over and we had a good laugh catching up. This is how I will always remember you Marty - having a ball with family and friends, laughing, full of love and life itself. God bless you and your family. Keep an eye out on us all from up above. You are dearly missed.

Every year I can't help but think of you and your family on September 11th. I'm so sorry for what happened to you. After 9/11 I decided to become a history teacher because I needed to do something. I have my students make individual tributes to the victims of 9/11 every year and always make sure someone makes a tribute to you. Even though I only knew you for a few years in Middleton I know you were full of promise and you were taken too soon. I look forward to visiting the Memorial in November and paying proper respect to you and everyone else who was lost that day. I hope you have found peace. I'll always remember you...

I don't even know where to start...
For months I have thought about writing again but wondered if it was worth it. I think that maybe you hear me when I pray so why bother typing it out... But what if I'm wrong?.. Who knows.
I don't know if it was harder this year because it was 10 years. The paper had called to interview me the day after Bin Laden was killed & asked if I would feel justice this year & on the anniversary of your death & as I had anticipated & stated to them the answer was 'No'. I actually didn't even think about him as I had figured. It was only about you in my mind. Thousands of people died & to me 9/11 is all about Martin.
Day after day without fail after 10 years you are still on my mind. That night I drove back into the city & saw the skyline from NJ. There was so much fog/clouds that it cut off the beams of light just about as high as the towers used to stand. It looked so perfect & familiar that it reminded me of all the times we used to drive to the park in Jersey City to look out at the city in awe & amazement & talk about 'the city' & being there one day. Now here I live without you only blocks from where you took your last breath & I still can't believe you are gone.
Paul, Rich & I went down to the memorial for your birthday. I thought it would be much more upsetting & that I would be a mess crying, as I feel like I am often crying about you anyway but I was surprised that I felt an overwhelming sense of peace there & it felt nice to finally have a more proper place to go & pay our respects to you.
Over 10 years... How did it go by so quickly & how do your parents do it. I feel so overwhelmed some days by the fact that you are not here living, breathing, enjoying your life & honestly I don't know how your parents do it. I have three children of my own that I live for & I can't even fathom them not outliving me. You were always such a strong, faithful person which we can attribute to your parents so I can imagine that is the only way they too can get through each day.
My children are getting older & are getting more aware about you. As you know we named our son after my husband & you & now my oldest daughter is often telling the twins about you... 'mommy's friend that she misses' & how you are 'in heaven.'
I don't ever want anyone to forget about you... even people that never had the privilege of meeting you.
Rest I peace. Until we meet again. Orlando Magic.

In St. Louis, MO, beginning on the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attack and lasting for one week, a beautiful hillside in Forest Park was adorned with 3 x 5 ft. American flags, one for each life lost on that day – close to 3,000 flags. Each flagpole was marked with a bracelet, which had the name, age, place of work, hometown, and a small photo identifying each person. Walking among the flags was an incredibly moving experience. After the display, and as part of a fundraiser to benefit injured marines, the flags were sold. This morning I purchased one of the flags. I randomly selected the first flag I came upon. My flag honored Martin Niederer. The flag is flying right now in my front yard, and I will continue to display it in his honor and memory.

---- During the Summer of 2001 ... I went to a Yankees game with my friend JR. It was a day game. After the game we were in Hoboken w- some friends on our way home. Me, JR and some friends were at a bar having a drink. I was hungry and went to get a few slices of pie. On my way back to the bar... I was walking down the street... and looked down the street suprised as I saw a unexpected familiar smiling face. We were about 50 feet away from each other... but we instantly connected eyes & both started smiling and laughing in amazment. It had been a year or two since I had seen that smiling face but as we met we laughed like it was just yesterday. It was Martin. He was just getting off of work and coming home from the World Trade Center. I told him I was with JR and some friends and he joined me as we walked back to meet JR. We talked, laughed, and caught up with each others life. & We Talked about the good old North Hunterdon days and about the future. That was the last time I saw Martin. But on that day he left a possitive life- long impression on me that will last forever. Martin was smiling and laughing big ... just like he always did. He was one of the happiest men I knew. He will be missed and never forgotten. Your memory lasts forever now Martin. And so does that great big smile. RIP ... Martin Niederer. September 11th, 2001. ----

I can't imagine how you are feeling this weekend, the tenth anniversary of Martin's death.I , myself have been so sad this week. I remember so vividly he & Justin breakdancing on the sidewalk. He was better than Justin. He loved Lionel Ritchie's song "All Night Long" & he would do a mean breakdance to it whenever it came on To this day, I cry every time I hear that song. It was great seeing you both at Justin's wedding. I wish that we could have spent more time together. I want you to know that I loved Martin very much ! Each year another 100 students learn about the tragedy of 9/11 in 7th grade terms and learn about my memories of you and our family. We make flag pins in your honor as we did after September 11, 2001. Mr. Mitschele and I will always remember you and your smile. There were so many funny, touching moments that happened with you. You are always in our prayers.

Marty- As September rolls around again I think about you and your family. You are thought of and remembered every single day, but between 9/11 and your birthday September is just "Martin". The world isn't the same without you. You were loved more than you could ever know and are missed by us all.

Hi Marty It is getting to that time of year again as our hearts begin to ache that you were taken from us. Not one day goes by thay any of us forget you--you were the best and we know everyday you watch over all of us. We miss you and love you.

Hi Marty
It hasn't gotten any easier you are still forever in our thoughts and hearts. I know everyday you look down over the Hanley's. We always know you are there and we miss you. Keep watching over us as we all need you. P.S. The lamb chops just are the same without you.
Love Ya

Marty was my neighbor for many years in Annandale, NJ. We both moved to Hook Mountain in the summer of 1991. I was in 8th grade and Marty in 9th. Neither of us knew anyone yet so we spent plenty of time just playing in our neighbor hood. A year later it was my turn as a frosh at North. I'll never forget the first week as a freshman, walking down the hall knowing no one, with my head down and out came a loud Hiiiiiii Jennnn. It was Marty. I put on a big smile (to asnwer his big smile) and immediately realized freshman year may not be so bad after all. Through highschool we traveled in very different circles, but that never stopped us from staying friends. I actually kept the book for marty's basketball team for a few years as well and was able to watch him out play everyone ; ). Although we didn't have long talks, or share special moments, its amazing how someone can still affect your life. I think about Marty and his family all the time....and I mean all the time. Mostly I think about all he could've accomplished in his life and how lucky we are to have each day. Life is so unfair. I frequently find it unfathomable that Marty was taken on 9/11. I remember when I heard the news. I prayed it could not be true. But as each day passed, and the rumor was not put to rest, I knew it was true.

I never met Tara, but I will never forget the words she spoke at Marty's memorial. "I don't love you because I need you, I need you because I love you."

Rest in peace Marty, till we meet again.
