John Sbarbaro Obituary

A Knack for Getting a Laugh

n birthdays, John Sbarbaro sent sympathy cards, said Kathy Pinto, his sister. When he went to Florida for the Mets' spring training, he and his friends played the kazoo and led cheers and danced. Every year the local newspaper ran a photo of them with the same caption: "The Crazy Guys From Brooklyn."

At costume parties, she said, he dressed up as a flasher, as Tinker Bell, as a patient in a skimpy hospital gown with an oversized thermometer attached to a strategic area.

"He was the cool brother," said Ms. Pinto. "Everybody would say: `Ooo, Johnny's your brother? Wow!' All these girls had crushes on him."

Mr. Sbarbaro, 45, was a bond trader for Cantor Fitzgerald for nearly 10 years. Before that, he owned Libations, a bar in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, where he had lived all his life. He loved golf and the Jets, the Mets and the Knicks and getting a rise and a laugh out of people.

Well buddy it has now been 21 years since you left us. Hard to believe.
My mom passed away in April this year at the age of 94. If you see “Mrs. D” as you used to call her, now you can tell her the truththat we never really studied on those Sundays when she made us her famous Italian dinners. I’m pretty sure she knew anyway

I gave her eulogy at St. Bernadette church and said, “There will come a time when the memory brings a smile to your face before a tear to your eyes.”
That’s how it is when I think of you pal-I smile as I recall all the good times we shared hanging out and with our friends.
RIP my brother and keep watching over us.

John,
tomorrow is 20 long years pal but the memory seems like yesterday. I speak periodically with some of the crew-mainly Marco and sometimes Butta. Regrettably Louie Restivo passed. I guess we are getting to that point in life. I turned 65 last month pal but at least I still have some hair:).
Not much more I can say here that I have not said before.
You were a brother I never had. You are thought about often pal and missed big time.
RIP.

Hey JS,

19 years today. I can't believe it. Those memories will never fade. Luckily that horror can never diminish all the great times we shared together in Bay Ridge and at Baruch. Life down here is absolutely crazy and you would not believe what the sports world is like with this pandemic. Baseball season 60 games with cardboard cutouts of fans. NFL just started with stadiums at 20% capacity. Hey that means no waiting on the beer lines!

I always think about you and smile. Miss you man. Peace my brother.

Well John tomorrow is 17 years since you are gone. Unreal. It also hit me that 2018 is 40 years since we graduated Baruch. I jogged my memory and here are some of the names that came to mind from the old crew and our infamous Sicilian Backgammon Society. These are in particular order and if I forgot you, not intentional-it's been a long time: Frankie Butta, Marco, Donna, Susan, Abby, Louie Restivo, JB, Maureen, Smoking Joe, Prof. Tansey, and of course you and I.

Miss you man......RIP

Hey Pal was thinking about you again.Know that all of your friends miss you. I still laugh at all the antics we pulled off together at Baruch! NFL started last night-Hope your Jets have a good season.
Your friend always,

I played football next to Johnny for two years before going to college. His athletic ability which was considerable was only outdone by his personality and character. If there was one guy on the team I would have like to have seen again, it would have been Johnny, without question. He will always be in my prayers.

Remembering Johnny (as I always knew him)on this 2 year anniversary. Played Rockne Jr. football with Johnny with my brother Bill. Bill played next to John on the line (John was an end) I still look at the team picture of all of us when we were about 18. Knew John from Breezy Point after football and Libations. Many a funny story could be shared. The Atwell brothers will miss this great guy!

My thoughts and prayers are with John's family. I graduated from OLA with John and hung out with him for a short time. He was always so kind. As years go by you lose touch with people and kind of forget them but thanks to my mother, Gertrude Lyons, who worked for Drs. Ferretti & Ferrari, I was always updated about John when he had a dentist appointment. My mother would call me and tell me that John was in and tell me how good looking he was and what a great dresser he was. I'm sure she's checking out is clothes in heaven too. To his family, just know that my prayers are with you.

God Bless You

I saw John's portrait today in the NY Times. It's so sad that a guy like John is no longer here with us. Although it had been many years that I had seen John I do remember what a truly nice, genuine guy he was. This was confirmed when I finally met up with him again when I worked for Cantor Fitzgerald from 1997-2001. I was encouraged to write this because my son Billy has just started Xaverian High School in Brooklyn. I was in the Class of '74 with John. I hope my son will be able to make friends like John. He will become a better man for it.

To John's family:I don't know you but you have my heartfelt sympathy. I am so sorry for your loss. God bless you all.

In times such as these, we look not at our differences, but at what we have in common.

We look not at our problems but feel for the sorrow of others.

We look not at our loved ones as given, but as precious gifts to enjoy each day.

We cry not just for ourselves, but for all those who share in our grief.

We look not only at our anger but also to draw love and strengh from so many.

And in our weakest moment we promise not to give up on loving,

rather we resolve to love again.

May God bless you Johnny and may we be comforted by the fact that sometimes God takes from us the very best.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
