Brock Safronoff Obituary

A Passion for the Lions

Tara Neelakantappa introduced Brock J. Safronoff to classical music; his compact disc collection quickly surpassed hers. She turned him on to reading on the loftier side of Stephen King, and he packed Kafka in their honeymoon suitcase.

"I would introduce him to something and before I knew it he was telling me everything about it," said the woman who on Aug. 4 became Mrs. Safronoff.

There was one passion that consumed Mr. Safronoff, 26, long before his freshman year at Amherst College, when he and his future wife were physics lab partners. It was his devotion to the Detroit Lions, which stemmed from his upbringing in Traverse City, Mich., and which required the strength to withstand continual heartbreak, said Michael A. Cohen, a friend and fellow fan.

Their friendship was based on a shared fantasy that the Lions would one day make it to the Super Bowl. When they met to watch games at an Upper East Side bar, they rarely discussed work.

Mr. Cohen, in fact, had forgotten Mr. Safronoff worked as a computer programmer at Marsh & McLennan. "I had to look up on his wedding announcement where it was that he worked," Mr. Cohen said. "I remember now that he told me he had this great view."

I lived down the street from you. You took a lonely kid new to the school home with you after school one day. Although we didn't become close friends I never forgot your kindness!
My daughter is 7 now and asked me about 9/11. I told her about you and your kind act to her Dad at a tuff time in his life! Showed her your year book photo.... I will never forget you!

Brock was one of the most stand-up guys I've ever known. I am proud he was my high school baseball teammate and friend. He touched many lives, and I wish his family well. I will never forget him or what happened on 9/11. May we continue to fight against the tyranny that haunts innocence and freedom.

Brock was a wonderful person and a great friend to many. We were friends all through high school and I still miss his smile and laughter. My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and family, he will always have a special place in our hearts.

I want to see to it that the Traverse City Trojan baseball program never forgets about you Brock. I remember you pumping your fist after getting out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam against Bay City Western in the 1992 district championship game. I remember vividly catching your Greg Maddux-esque 70 pitch, 57 strike complete game against Sault. Ste Marie in '93. More importantly, I remember what a great representative you were of your school and your community. You won't be forgotten.

I was going through some boxes the other day and found a picture of Brock and I walking back from the bullpen together at Midland High I think. I was, in my usually seriuos way, wearing my catchers mit on my head and having a good laugh. Brock was kind of looking at me as if to say "I think this guy's a little crazy..." Fun moment!

I always enjoyed playing ball with Brock and remember some great games that he pitched. People sometimes underestimated him on the mound, but he was a great pitcher and turned more than a few heads over the years that he played. More than anything though Brock was just a great human being.

I think of you often Brock. Please know that you are well remembered.

We have had the 911 Memory Quilt here in Zachary this weekend. I did

the block for Brock. I chose his name because I have a grandson named

Brock and when I checked his bio I

saw he was married on my sons birth-

day. I was so happy to finally see

the quilt in person. I had viewed

it on the internet but its so much

more beautiful in person. I helped

Corey Gamel and his other volunteers

to put the quilt up and stayed all

three days to help and to help take

it down today. I took time each day

to view a few more of the 3 thousand or so blocks. It is really a beautiful tribute. Corey has done an

excellent job of keeping the memory

alive of all who lost their lives

that day.

Brock grew up on Deepwater Point with my children. He came from a lovely, loving family. Although the years are now passing since his death, I want his wife and family to know that he is NOT forgotten.

Brock was a fellow student at TCHS. We were never close friends- never hung out or played baseball together. Just two kids that went to the same school and worked for the same grocery store chain. But I always remember his smile. There was something warm and genuine there, as he walked down the halls in his letter jacket. He had a real sincerity. Anyone who knew Brock knows what I am talking about. I always liked Brock, and considered him a friend. I can see it so clearly, like it was yesterday.

I heard the news two months after 911 and still find it hard to believe that he's gone. How does a kid just like me from Traverse City Michigan end up a casualty in the WTC? How could any of us have imagined, as we watchd those towers fall, that we were losing such a friend?

Dear Tara,

The first person Mark ever mentioned spending time with at his new job at Marsh was Brock. Every day Mark would come home and mention something that Brock did or said. I am sure they would have been great friends. I hope in their place that we will be freinds forever.

Love,

Jenny

It’s hard to forget his indecisive walk, an air of cautiousness and uncertainty about him, his wonderful smile, and his unique sense of humor… So bright and multi-talented, intelligent and hardworking, responsible and conscientious, kindhearted and genuine, so devoted to his girlfriend – such an amazing person. So unbelievably young and full of great plans for the future…
What a tragic loss!

I only knew Brock briefly; we worked at the World Financial Center together before he went over to Cantor. He always struck me as a good-natured and generous person, though. His death is a great loss.

Thank you for sharing Brock's smile and story with the world. He had a very warm looking smile that must have matched his heart. We are very sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
