Elsy Osorio-Oliva Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2001.
Family Comes First
Elsy C. Osorio-Oliva was the oldest sibling in her Flushing, Queens, household, but she acted like a mother hen. She doted on her younger brother and sister -- Kate and Anthony Umanzor, 10 and 8 -- with whom she lived, along with her mother and stepfather. And she doted on her mother, Feliciana Oliva-Umanzor, who left college and a war-ravaged El Salvador in 1983 for a new living in the United States cleaning apartments.

A junior translation engineer with General Telecom on the 83rd floor of 1 World Trade Center, Ms. Osorio-Oliva, 27, spoiled her sister and brother with toys, outings and weekend breakfasts of pancakes and French toast. She paid for her mother to take courses in computer and tax preparation so she could get an enjoyable job. The daughter, who was known by her middle name, Carolina, even lent her mother some clothes for the office, and planned to buyher a car so she could be more independent.

But there was so much independence that Ms. Osorio-Oliva wanted for herself. Engaged for the last two years, her mother said, she wanted to get married and have a house big enough to move in her whole family.

"She said, 'Mami, I can't live without you or the children,' " her mother said.

As a customer of General telecom, I worked and met Elsy many times. She was my favorite at GenTel. She was very kind and helpful. From the very first time I met her, she always had a smile.

I met Elsy in John Bowne High School. She was a very nice friend. I cannot believe she is gone. I just found out three weeks ago on 4/9/06 that she had died in the attacks. I cried because I didn't know and didn't have the chance to go to her funeral or anything. I remember her sweet face. She was such a nice friend. He voice was always very soft when she spoke. Elsy is watching over her siblings and mother. Mrs Oliva I want to tell you that I am sorry for your lost and know that she is a good place next to god. May she rest in peace. I still have the year book when we graduated in 1992

To Elsy,

You have touched so many lives with your kindness. Although we did not always see each-other, I looked forward to some day calling you my sister in law - because I had never seen my brother as happy as you made him for all those years- seeing his pain and grief caused by this terrible tragedy - I knew he had lost part of who he was and that no one would ever touch his heart the way you did- I really wish we had gotten the opportunity to get to know each other better. At the end, my brother brought you around more and more and boy was I happy not only because I got to be around my brother more but also because it gave me a chance to be around the person who had made such a big difference in Jose's life- you, his angel, the one he always spoke so well about. Thank you for entering his life and my life. I miss you and rest in peace.

Daniel Montengro y familia.

We are so very sorry for your loss of Carolina. She sounds like she was an extremely hard working, determined, and giving person filled with warmth and love for her family. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
