Hector Tirado Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2001.
Firefighter and Model
Of his three jobs, Hector Tirado Jr. liked firefighting work the best. A former emergency medical technician, he was lured to the New York Fire Department less than two years ago by the excitement and the opportunity to help people, said his uncle, Robert Tirado.

The divorced father of five children, Mr. Tirado, 30, also worked as a waiter and, occasionally, as a model. His latest shoot was posing in casual clothes for a Latino firefighters calendar that was due out sometime this year.

His uncle said, "I'd walk on the street with him in the summer and the girls would give him their number."

Mr. Tirado, who lived in the Bronx and was a member of Engine 23 in Manhattan, did not shy away from the attention, but was blasé about it, his uncle said.

His main focus was to support his children ‹ a 7-year-old daughter and four boys, ages 11, 10, 6 and 5 ‹ who lived in Ohio with their mother. Mr. Tirado visited them every month, and they spent summers with him in the city.

"As long as it's legitimate and I make money for my children," he told his uncle about the modeling, "I don't care."

Sending our heartfelt condolences to your family. Words will never remove the pain of loss but they do show that others still do care after all of this time. May God continue to give the strength needed (Ps.94:19) to cope with such a very sad loss. Hector will always be greatly missed. May the time finally come when these kinds of violence will no longer exist.

Another year has gone by and there's not a day that passes that your name is not spoken by me. My K9 partner Ttirado is still upholding your name and you would be proud of him. As of May this year we have transferred from Honolulu to Indianapolis. With us on the mainland, there is going to be much more travel opportunities for special events. I definately would like to bring him to your firehouse if we ever have a detail to NYC but my open invitation is always available for any friend or family member of yours if they would ever like to meet him. We are stationed out is the Indianapolis International Airport. He has the most up beat loving personality much of what I have read about you. Thank you once again for your sacrifice sir! As time goes by, I still have you in my thoughts and prayers. I always knew that you were special to all of us; but to me, most of all because of your sincerity, your wisdom, and your unconditional love for me as your uncle. Even when I chastised you at times for something you may said or done, you always came back to me with a gift or just to tell me you loved me. How can I ever forget that? 9/11 is just an anniversary: you are with me 365 days a year. Your uncle, Roberto Tirado...."whatever, whatever"....

Explosive Detection K-9 Ttirado working at the Honolulu International Airport.

Keith Smith

June 18, 2013

Aloha

My name is Keith Smith and I am an explosive detection canine handler. For those unfamiliar with the TSA K9 program, dogs that have been bred within the agency follow a naming system where each puppy is named after a hero of the 9/11 tragedy.

On November 23, 2009 the “T” litter was born and an amazing male black labrador retriever was bestowed with the name Ttirado (The double T is part of the naming system). This dog was named in honor of Hector Tirado Jr.

Ttirado moved from the puppy program into formal training and in March of 2012 I was assigned and paired with Ttirado. Ttirado is now a fully graduated K9 working at the Honolulu International Airport as a Passenger Screening Canine. Ttirado's job is to detect explosives amongst the people and luggage transitioning through the airport. Ttirado works to keep the traveling public safe and prevent another tragedy like 9/11.

Ttirado has an excellent nose for detecting explosives and excels at his training. At home, he has a wonderful personality. He is a very energetic guy with a charismatic loving personality in the office. Every handler loves giving him attention and he loves giving it right back.

I am not only honored to be working with such a great partner but I am also honored to uphold the name he bestows. I have researched what I could about Hector Tirado Jr. on the internet and he apparently was a great charismatic guy, a loving father, and a real hero for our country.

Hector, I wanted to let you know of his namesake and that every time I speak or see my partners name, I am reminded of the ultimate sacrifice you made for this country.

If anybody from the Tirado family or Engine 23 would like to contact me, I would gladly like to share more information about my partner. I can be reached at [email protected].

My name is Caleb Gross, I'm in the academy in Austin, Texas. On September 11, 2012 I carried dogtags with your name and engine on them while me and the other cadets in the academy with me did the 110 stairs in your memory. We owe you for so much, thank you. We'll never forget.

I didn't know you. I wish I could have, I have had the opportunity to meet one of your sons. I saw his tattoo in memory of you and I asked him what had happened. I could see the love in his eyes when he spoke about you, but I could also see the pain and the hurt of losing you. He said how great of a man you were and a fighter. I wish I would have had the opportunity to meet you, because if your son is anything like you, then you were one amazing man.

Tirado Family,
I am a member of the Charlotte Fire Department in North Carolina. On Sunday September 11, 2011 our fire department hosted a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. Our 343 FDNY brothers were honored and remembered by climbers carrying their picture up 110 stories. It was my honor to climb along with Hector, it was b/c of him and 342 other firefighters that I do what I do today. We didn't climb on Sunday to show our strength or for glory, we climbed for all those who like Hector made the ultimate sacrifice trying to save as many people as possible. I would like you to know that even though I didn't know Hector, through these messages I've been able to see the kind of man he was and how loved he was. It was an honor for me to carry his picture, I hope that I have made him, your family and his crew from Engine 23 proud.

Respectfully,
FF Anthony Perez

It's so unreal to think of what you endured in those moments. Just know you were a blessing to those you helped and a great dad to your child and awesome brother to you siblings. My beloved nephew Hector. Yesterday, 9/11, they were reading the names on the anniversary. I was at work and a co-worker came to my office and said she saw when they said your name and showed your picture on TV. She said she prayed for you and that you resembled me! I had to close my door and grieve for you quietly for awhile. My love for you is eternal.

I miss you Hector, more than words can say..I still have all the gifts you gave me throughout your brief life, your letters from Panama, your pictures, even some messages on my answering machine. I know many people loved you, and myself as your uncle on your dad's side, my memory of you is always present. It's been 6 years since I last saw you: you came to my apartment a week before 9/11 and I found you sleeping on my sofa. I kissed your forehead before I left for work not knowing I'd never see you alive again. Rest in peace forever. Remember when I sang to you "Toujours Avec Moi" and you had tears in your eyes. I will never forget that day. I will always love you.

Hector, I never met you but now your boys have become a part of my boys lives. Denzel and Davon play football almost daily in my yard. Your young children live by us now and remind us daily how precious life is and never take things for granted. Your picture with candles was displayed on the porch of your children's house on the 2nd anniversary of 9/11. A reminder of the sacifice you made that horrible day. Seeing your picture, I see your eyes and smile in Davon. Denzel scored a touchdown last Saturday to help his and my son's football team make it to the youth football playoffs. Your boys show such pride when they talk of you. You would be proud.

I am deeply sorry for the lost of relative that I never had the chance to got to know him better as a cousin. But I wish to give my condelensces to a person who put his life on the line of duty, in which we call "selfless-service". I too, was called when the nation was in trouble, so I know how it feels like when you leave your family, the most precious thing in life, and I know that his departure was never in vain, I just hope that he can be an example, not only for me, but also, for the rest of the whole family, I know its not easy... it never is, believe me, but with GOD, Everything is Possible. This entry is not for Hector, because he has fought the good fight, but for his family, for their fight goes on... May GOD bless you always and that in times of trouble... you may turn to him, for he is the only GOD that knows your pain and can help you heal the scars you really have, Have FAITH, and courage to keep living.

YOU WERE SOMEONE WHO CROSSED MY PATH AND LEFT A LASTING IMPRESSION. EVEN THOUGH WE WERE STRANGERS THE BRIEF ENCOUNTER I HAD WITH YOU WILL ALWAYS LEAVE A FOOTPRINT IN MY MEMORY. ON WEDNESDAY, WHICH MARKED THE YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THAT HORRIBLE DAY - THERE WAS A MEMORIAL AT ONCE WAS THE TRADE CENTER. I WAS THERE FOR MY LOVED ONE AND FELT LUCKY TO BE THERE HONORING ALL OF THOSE WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES TO SAVE OTHERS. IN A SPACE WHERE THERE WERE HUNDREDS - YOU NEVER EXPECT TO SEE ANYONE YOU KNOW - BUT AS MY FAMILY MADE THEIR WAY TO WHAT WAS CALLED "THE CIRCLE OF LIFE" I STOOD RIGHT BESIDE YOUR UNCLE. WHO WOULD OF THOUGHT THAT OF ALL FAMILIES I WOULD STAND BESIDE IT WOULD BE YOURS. I HAD A FEELING IT WAS HIM AND THEN MY FEELINGS WERE PROVEN CORRECT WHEN HE TURNED AND I SAW HIM HOLDING YOUR PHOTO. I WANTED TO APPROACH HIM AND GIVE HIM WHAT I HAD IN MY HAND - SOMETHING I HAD TO HONOR ALL OF THE FIREMEN WHO SACRIFICED SO MUCH THAT DAY - BUT I DID NOT WANT TO INTRUDE. I STILL REMEMBER THAT DAY I MET YOU AND I ALWAYS FIND MYSELF REMEMBERING YOU AND YOUR FAMILY IN MY PRAYERS. YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN ......

Hector,

There isn't a day that goes by that we ur friends at 941 Jerome can't help but think about you. There are times that we cry and then we burst out laughing because we will remember a funny gesture or joke that you made. You always said that you wanted to die a "HERO", and indeed you are one. At least at 941 Jerome, ur our HERO. May you be with God and his wonderful angels.

"YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN"

I was at the family viewing room at Liberty Street with my daughter and I've seen the photo of Hector. We've lost our beloved Andrew Bailey from the North Tower. My deepest condolences to the Tirado Family. "Nuestra corazon estan partida pero nuesto amores son Angeles del cielo".

I want to thank everyone who has left such beautiful messages for my loving nephew,on behalf of our family. I was very close to Hector Luis and miss him more than words can say.Hector was an advocate for peace on earth, however, there continues the strife in the middle east, our country in danger, and worst, the sad split between our own family. Nonetheless, His truth goes marching on. A hero among many heroes on 9/11/01, my nephew will remain in my heart forever..
