Arthur Scullin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2001.
Schmoozer Extraordinaire
Arthur Warren Scullin schmoozed with everyone, even telemarketers. "He never hung up on them," said Mr. Scullin's widow, Cathy. "He'd ask them where they were calling from. He would ask them what the weather was like, what time it was."

His gregariousness could get on the nerves of his children, Warren, Jim and Nora, when they were younger. When everyone else was, say, cruising through the tollbooth at the Throgs Neck Bridge, they would be sitting there because their father was chatting up the toll taker.

As a senior vice president and director of taxes at Marsh Inc., Mr. Scullin, 57, traveled all over the world. Naturally, he talked to everyone he met. "He would ask people, 'Do you know anybody in New York?' " Mrs. Scullin recalled. "If they said no, he would say, 'You do now,' and he'd give them his business card."

Born in Woodside, Queens, Mr. Scullin met his wife at the Lowery Street subway station of the Flushing IRT 36 years ago, and together they migrated to Auburndale, Queens. Every week, Mr. Scullin would return to Woodside to visit his mother, Ethel, 90. "He used to say that when he retired, he was going to move back to an apartment in Woodside so he could return to his roots," Mrs. Scullin said. "I would say, 'I'll send you a postcard from Arizona.' I recently got in touch with James Scullin Warren's younger brother and had no idea this website existed. Now that I do I would like to express my sorrow to the Scullin family. Warren always took the time to stop and joke around with the neighbors. When I joined the Navy he was there to give me some pointers since he was a Seabee in the Navy himself. God bless him and his family

Took this picture at the beach Saturday on a bench I was sitting on watching the waves come in over Shinnecock Inlet, while thinking about 9/11 coming up, he seems to be an interesting guy....Remember the ones lost and the soldiers defending our freedom to hope this tradgedy never happens again.

Mrs. Scullin,

Thank you for blessing each and every one of us who were fotunate enough to have known you; to have invested so much time, patience, and knowledge to brighten our future when the evils of this world took yours away is something to be honored.

It just seemed like yesterday I was hanging out with Mr. Scullin at his house waiting for his daughter Nora to get ready to go out. There were always talks about basketball, college, and plans for the future. Never in a million years would I have ever thought such a terrible thing would happen to such a wonderful, funny, and caring person. He loved his wife, his family. his job, and just life in general. If there were more people who lived their lives like Mr. Scullin, this world would be such a better place! Mr. Scullin you will not be forgotten and the memories of you will always be in my heart.

I didnt have a chance in meeting Mr. Scullin but I do know his son- a great guy who I have the pleasure in sharing a Hampton's House with. I just found out that he lost his father in 9-11. I have also lost someone close to me on 9-11 (my mother). Im glad that we know each other and share this very special, but sad, bond. Sorry about your loss. My prayers go out to the Scullin family.

To the Scullin Family,

This is Des Bishop from St. Kevins. I never knew this rememberance site existed and I found it today. Many days in the last 3 years have I thought about the only track and Field coach I ever had. I never ran track again after St. Kevins. I always felt a connection with your family as my own Grandfather came to NY with Mrs. Scullin's father. He was a great man and even as a child I remember thinking he was such a nice person. (I hated him for making me run long distances but that must have been the Asthma.)

Anyway this is just a message from Ireland to let you know that even in the Old Country thoughts and prayers are with you on the Anniversary.

To Warren & Family,

As the second anniversary has arrived, I want to remind you that the thoughts, love, and prayers of family and friends are around you.

I remember your father warmly from

Halloween/holiday parties at your home. I know he is very proud of you all. I was happy to learn of the street named after him this summer.

God Bless,

Even though I've lived in Seattle for 35 years, I grew up in New York. When I first learned of the events of 9/11, I felt sure that I would know at least one of the victims. It was only recently that I heard about Warren (that is the name by which I knew him when I lived around the corner from him in Woodside in the 50's and 60's). I remember him as upbeat and as a good guy. It looked as if he kept that trademark smile all through his life. Belated condolences to all family members and close friends.

I went to college with Mr. Scullin's daughter Nora. I recently learned of the tragic passing of Mr. Scullin. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Mr. Scullin, I was friends with Nora and knew that she came from a very good family. Reading through these tributes I've learned that he was a great person and someone you wanted to get to know. My deepest sympathies go out to the entire Scullin family.

Dear Ms. Scullin,

I go to Lincoln High School and today my chorus group sang the Mozart Requiem in honor of all whose lives were taken away on September 11th of 2001. Each student was given a button to wear for the day with a name of a person that died. I got Arthur Warren Scullin. Please except my deepest condolences as you go through this anniversary. All day I have been watching horrific things on the TV of last years event and it seems even more horrible now than it did then. I feel so badly that you had to experience the loss of such a special person in your life. Today, while in chorus practicing for our song, my friend and I sat down right where we were at and prayed for the person on our buttons. I prayed for you and your family members and I am still praying to this moment. The button is in my room and I will keep it always close to my heart. May God watch over you and and your family. Much love to you.

Dear Cathy & family

It hardy seems a year since we have lost a truly great friend, one we knew, love & respected. Always a quick answer, generous ear, and a devil of a smile. No matter where our lives took us, there was always time for the semi-annual phone call.Just a few minutes to catch up families, work, old friends, and good times. We'll always remember the great times in Woodside & especially the last time you guys were up in Boston.

Warren, I guess you'll still have to wait until we meet again to collect on the JETS Super Bowl bet.

This world lost a very "special" person on 09/11/2001.

We loved you Warren.

Dear Cathy and Family,

Arthur sounded like he was a real special outgoing individual. He must have been a great Father, as well as a husband. He now sits with the father above. May God Bless you and your Family. I talk to Jim at Metro-North Railroad often.

My memories of Warren go back to when we were boys growing up on 65 street in Woodside. Warren was not only a fun person but he had a sweet decency about him that he never lost in the 45 plus years that I knew him.

My heart goes out to his wife Cathy and their children. I know time is supposed to heal all wounds and I hope it is working in this instance.

Dear Mrs. Scullin, Warren, Jimmy and Nora,

I've known Mr. Scullin for 23 years. My mother and Mrs Scullin have been very close friends since high school. I will never forget the fourth of July parties, the barbeques, and the huge smile that greeted me with a "hello Ms.Farrell" since the day I was born.

I think of you often Mr. Scullin, and I look forward to the barbeques in the future.

I remember the visit you made in 1996 at Marsh Offices here in Brazil, the time we spent together revising the local tax issues and the lovely diners we had. I also remember the pleasant time you spent with me last time in New York.

Art, you were a super person and friend.

God Bless you.

I always heard of him as "Uncle Warren" - he was the uncle of my best friend in the world. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting him a few times. He was always so warm, welcoming, and hysterically funny. He always told me I was welcome every year at family parties. I know I will never know him as a family memember, but I see the loss, and I feel it too...the world has lost one of the few people who keeps it smiling.

Dear Cathy and family:

Another leaf has fallen from the branches of our family tree

This leaf has been swept up in the wind past the clouds and on its way to heaven

Although we knew as time went on, it was hard to part with a leaf so dear

The roots of our family tree are strong and as the remaining leaves on the branches, we must hang on.

Love, Peggy and Leo

To Cathy, Jim, Warren and Nora,

My family and I were very sorry to hear about Warren from John Frangos. Although I didn't know him well, I always remembered him as a nice person, who was always smiling. My dad was Fanny Frangos' brother, Harry Stathos, and we knew Warren for years from Woodside. We send our condolences to all of you and wish you well. Sincerely, Kathe Stathos Clarke and Family, and Kellie Stathos.

Art and I graduated from St. Francis College in 1965, and have always been able to stay in touch. We always arranged to meet a couple of times a year; and he would fill me in on the NY college basketball scene. I will miss those meetings. God bless you.

We are very sorry for your loss of Arthur. As friendly as he sounds I wish I would have met him. The world will miss such a nice person. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
