Mark Motroni Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2001.
He Became Everything
Mark Motroni took a ribbing for the protective goggles he wore over his glasses when he showed up at the community courts to shoot hoops with his sons, but that did not stop kids from wanting the elder statesman on their team.

Same thing happened on the baseball diamond. When his son, Christopher, 23, was looking for a pitcher to fill in last summer in Central Park, he tapped his 57-year-old dad, a broker-trader at Carr Futures. They won; Mr. Motroni went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Whatever he did -- trading crude oil options at the Mercantile Exchange, singing and touring with a busy salsa band, Orquesta Novel, or playing ball with his three sons, all of whom followed him to Wall Street jobs -- Mr. Motroni put his heart into it.

Mr. Motroni, who arrived from Cuba when he was 12 knowing no English, felt blessed for the chance to reinvent himself in the United States. He went to Mass every morning before hitting the trading pit. His presence Sept. 11 at Carr's 92nd floor office was a fluke: he was there for a twice-a-year meeting.

"He came here with nothing and he turned himself into everything," said Christopher, who lives at home with his parents in Fort Lee, N.J. "Every day after work he'd come up to my room and ask what I learned today."

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Motroni 22yrs ago. I was the manager of the Hoboken Municipal Parking Garages where Mr. Motroni parked his vehicle daily in Garage B for a number of years. Every morning, Mr. Motroni would greet our staff after parking his vehicle. I had the impression that he was such a nice person! On that awful morning of 911, I like so many in this beautiful country of ours was sad and shocked to learn of the devastation that took place. Upon learning of the death of so many and in particular, of those I knew such as Mr. Motroni, I was deeply heartbroken for their families and friends. Subsequently, I got to meet his son Chris and his wife Dolores who ironically became my neighbors as Hoboken residents. Twenty years have gone by and the sadness remains as I watch each year the names read and the pain that these families are enduring. We pay tribute and honor ALL who lost their lives! My most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the Motroni family and to all the families and friends of 911!! God bless these families and friends and God bless AMERICA!!

Hi! Today I decided to "walk around New York", through goggle maps and I came across the memorial to the people who disincarnated on the fateful September 11th! I noticed that around them the names of people who were protagonists of this immense sadness of humanity have been recorded! I saw a rose ... I got close and next to it I see a name like mine: Marco. That's why I'm writing this message here! I was thrilled!!!! With so many names, I came across one like mine !!!!! Discover my English, but I'm being helped by the google translator! Peace for all!

I used to work as a waitress in New York City at the Boomba nightclub on 52nd and Broadway, back in the mid-1970s. Tipica Novel played that club a lot during those years that I worked there. I remember Mark well, playing and singing; and what a very nice person he was and yes, a gentleman. We shared some laughs - I did not know until I was told years after 9/11 that he was caught up in that horrific event. I am still saddened by this news. (From an old acquaintance)

I remember Mark as the lead singer of Tipica Novel as I worked part time as a waitress back in the day at a nightclub. His music and melodic voice will always live on especially in my thoughts. Today I work for a Newschannel and have covered the 911 memorial. I sit still in my office as his name comes up and pray for him and his family always…Mark, I remember you, WE remember you…Que dios este a tu lado siempre…

Mark touched everyone that was lucky enough to know him. He was a great man with a very good understanding of how to treat people. You can tell by the way he raised his children and how people remember him just how great he truly was. I think of MOT often and today I remember him for the man he was and the way he lived. He is missed by all that knew him.

intelligent, funny, responsible men who
are a joy to know. I know he is watching over them and their families.
I pray for those that love and miss him most. God bless him and Father give him comfort and peace in Your arms.

I was a commodity broker on the floor and had many dealings with Mark. He was always fair. I knew his son Mark and remember when he worked in the summers starting when he was 15. I used to attend mass every morning at St Peters and would always see Mark there. We would see each other going or coming from communion and he would give me a little wave of a finger as he had his hands together.Even on the morning of Sept 11 he was at mass and left right after communion. He was a great man and a great family man

To the Motroni Family,
Mark hired me right out of college in December 1982 to work on the floor of the NY COMEX in 4 WTC. I was so nervous going to interview for that job and he was such a relaxed guy. He immediately put me at ease and hired me. Mark was a warm, friendly man who always had time for a smile and a kind word. The world misses him but he is with God.
God bless the Motroni family- Mark will always be remembered.

Where to begin...I worked with Mark for a number of years on the NYMEX and I think of him more often than I'd have imagined. No matter the stressors of everyday trading he was never, ever less than a gentleman. Since my own parents had moved away, I saw him as a father figure. I had many conversations with him about the trials of life. He was the kind of man no matter how hectic things got, he'd take the time to compliment your new shoes. I always respected his passion for family and life. I know in my heart he brought calm and peace to those around him THAT day, as he had any other day....an angel dressed in a tuxedo.

Mark was my first boss on Wall st. working the gold pit for Dean Witter in the fairly new WTC in 1981.I remember taking our Series 3 test together, along with Sam Stovall, and we all passed the first time! I will always remember him for the complete gentleman that he was and for his sense of humor,my prayers go out to his family whenever I think of him, and it is still quite often.May he rest in peace.

To Mark's sons. I was his secretary at Dean Witter for about 3 years, during the mid 1980's. He introduced me to Charanga music, and to the way a decent man can be successful in business. I am hispanic, but grew up in the West, where I now live again, and your father remains for me the example of how each of us can make a good life, in this country, and still treat people fairly and compassionately. I would've continued to work for Mark indefinately, but the people and circumstances at that time, pushed me into finding another position.
I think of him often and have told many friends about him.
God bless all you of you.

When I was a teenager I danced to the music of Tipica Novel, where Marco was one of the lead singers. Later on in life I was recruited to join the band by Willie Ellis (piano & leader)and am presently the congero for the band. I guess that makes me an heir to the legacy that was left by Marco and the original members of Tipica Novel. I was greatly saddened to learn of his passing on 9/11. I know that he is in heaven and there is a heck of a party going on and Marco is definitely a part of those festivities, as his talent would warrant. God Bless you Marco, if God wills it we will meet again. We will try and carry on the beautiful music that you and the others created.

Though I did not know Marcos Motroni personally but saw him when he formed a part of Tipica Novel, whose music I enjoyed, one could percieve that Marcos Motroni had a pleasant presence about him. His smile seemed genuine. Through his friends wonderful words, I can now gather that he certainly seemed like someone who had pride while not being arrogant, intelligent but not overbearing and genuinely kind. May he rest in peace and may his family's sorrow be calmed by the love and wonderful memories that he has left behind.

I knew very little of Mr. Motroni we briefly met him as Marcos the singer of Orq. Novel, my mom and sister were heavy Novel fans in the late 70's, early 80's in the era of Casablanca. Marcos represents a great era lived in New York. Many musicians and salseros will miss his musical contributions, as will his broker companions. May God Bless him and his family.

I didn't know Marco, I never met him, I never saw him but on September 11, 2002 my wife and I rode our motorcycle through the streets of Phoenix, Arizona in his honor. The City of Phoenix completely closed I-10 for about 3 hours so a huge motorcycle parade could take place, there was one motorcycle for each hero lost on 9-11. I proudly wore a bracelet with Marco's name on it therefore making him our co-pilot, my wife and I are Mexican and love to dance Salsa music, I now will remember him when I go to a Salsa club. I truly hope he liked the ride on our Harley on that day.

God bless him and his family.

i had the hounour of working with mark when i began working for dean witter in new york in january 1981. my boss berta nosti had lived a portion of her life in cuba, and had also worked with mark at hutton before migrating to dwr. she introduced me to him and expressed to me he that he was very knowledgeable, trustworthy and kind. over the years i worked there, i learned for myself how accurate that descriotion of mark was. i can still envision him doing a little salsa step when leaving our department after being "summoned" upstairs..... i remember the warmth in his laughter, and, or course - the famous moustache.

to the family of mark:

as difficult as it is for me to have lost colleagues and exceptional, special people like mark - i know it is all the more difficult for you. my heart goes out to you for your loss and my prayers are with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
