Charles Murphy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2001.
'Absurdly Generous'
After growing up in Ridgewood, N.J., with four older sisters, Charlie Murphy somehow emerged as transcendently normal. "We wanted to move to the suburbs," said Lyna Huie, his fiancée, who worked with him at Cantor Fitzgerald. "He wanted a big porch. A deck in the back with a pool and a fireplace were necessities."

He was "relentlessly funny," said one sister, Nancy. He ruled the family's holiday Trivial Pursuit games. "He'd insult you and you'd be laughing so hard you didn't care," she said.

At 36, he was finally making some money, which he spent on presents.

"He was absurdly generous," Nancy said. "He'd come at Christmas with the car loaded with gifts. He'd bring bags and bags of steaks and salmon to family parties. He'd do all the cooking and all the cleaning and if you tried to thank him, he'd insult you and make you laugh."

I have come to realize that separation is just that, a displacement but not an end at all.
It is my hope that we allow your memories to color and shape the continuation of your legacy.
With deepest respect to you and all of your family and friends. I feel honored to have had “the last dance”. Love you Murph!!!

I recently visited New York and went to the Ground Zero memorial. When walking up to the beautiful footprints I stopped in front of Charles's name. My heart felt your grief. My last name is Murphy and I live in Michigan. I felt a kinship. My prayers are with you all. You can see the humor and love in his eyes. Murphy's have that funny, loving gene. It flows through the heart and is extended to all. Charles is remembered. Sincerely, Mary Murphy

Dear Murphys,
I still think of your family and what a fun group you were. I went to school with Liza and remember fondly her adorable kid brother Charlie. He was like a little leprechuan. He had a sweet spirit. Its been years since I have seen old friends from Ridgewood but when 9/11 happened and we learned of those we lost, I grieved for your family like so many who knew the Murphy Clan. After so many years, I hope you can now laugh remembering Charlie's jokes and pranks and the joy he gave. I hope this finds you well. God bless.

May this infamous day, etched in our memories, sensitize us to work for a world of justice and PEACE. May evil find no place in this world and hatred be banned forever. Let America and freedom stand strong, as the fallen are remembered for a Blessing. With prayers of love to you and your family.

I knew you only as Murph... The funniest guy in the room, your laughter was contagious... and you and your friends loved each other like brothers (fer, keno, cos, stills, holmsey, dells).... I was just an outsider but you made me feel welcomed. I will always remember!!

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Even as the sun sets here on earth, a new star rises in heaven. I'll wait for the dance....

To the entire Murphy Family~

During the Fall of 2001, I received an e-mail requesting stitching help for the Memorial Flag Project. And I immediately jump at the chance to participate. So, I after sending in all my information and got Charlie’s name back to stitch. And let me just say, that it was an HONOR and PRIVILEGE to have his square. I honestly believe that everyone who lost their life on that horrible day needs to be remembered and cherished by ALL.

May God bless you and keep you always in his hands!!!

To All The Murphy's,

Very sad to learn the loss of Charlie. I was friends with Mary and always wondered how he could live in a house with all those girls! May he rest in peace and prayers for healing for the Family.

I remember being in social studies class with Charlie Murphy. He made the class fun because he was always goofing on the teacher Mr. Bencivenga and calling him "Mr.B" I remember Murph had a great sense of humor and was always laughing. I give my deepest sympathy to the Murphy family. I keep you all in my prayers. I'm in the Navy reserves and voluntarily got deployed to serve in Charlie's honor. I told all of my shipmates about him. I will continue to serve in his honor and the others who were lost. God Bless you Murph for the time I knew you.

For the Murphy family and friends:

I went to Somerville with "Chuck" and "Murph" as we knew him. We were in the 3rd grade together, he sat right behind me. "...Morrison, Murphy...", how could I forget? Believe me, he could get into a lot of trouble in the back of the classroom. After 8th grade at Benjamin Franklin, we moved to Canada.

I wanted to share my last memory of Chuck. After 9/11 was over, Claudia O'Rourke filled me in on what happened. I pulled out my photo of our 3rd grade picture for my husband and daughter to see. My husband asked me about my last memory of Chuck.

I remember the toboggan hill behind Somerville. It was getting dark one winter evening, we were getting ready to trudge home. I remember Chuck pulling a toboggan to the top of the hill in the gathering dark, his clothes soaked through. As I left for home, I remember hearing his whoops of glee in the dusk.

I know he grew up, his picture looks exactly the same, but I will always remember that soaking wet kid tobogganing in the winter evening.

I would like to send our condolences to the Murphy family.

Hey Murph!! We miss you, been thinking of you alot. Remembering your infamous line of "hold that thought," and me believing you at Club Goffle that one day, I was in the middle of what I thought was a great story, you interupting me and telling me to "hold that thought" so about 30 minutes later when I couldn't find you ANYWHERE someone told me you got in your car and went home. Typical!!! Well we all had such great, hysterical times and they as well as you will always be remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Also, I was talking to Joan yesterday, I know you remember my sister and she told me whenever she or Taylor, her oldest daughter look at the clock for some reason in the past few weeks it would always be at 9:11, so she told Taylor to say hello to you because she knows your with us.

P.S. Bobby wants to know where the Don Mattingly baseball is you have from the Yankee game, (you remember, the one you caught after you stole his seat!!)

Love You and say hello to my Dad please.

To the family of Charlie Murphy: After reading the Tribute to Charlie in the 9/30/2001 NY Times, I admire his qualities and grieve for the loss suffered by all who knew and loved him. I chose Charlie's name for the United In Memory 9/11 Memorial Quilt. He sounds like a wonderful person, and I'm happy to contribute to the quilt! While not directly affected by the 9/11 tragedy, my husband is currently serving 1-2 years in the Navy Reserve. Being separated from him for so long has been and will continue to be difficult but I'm proud of his service to our Country and I support our military 100%. I hope I can capture a tiny bit of Charlie's wonderful qualities in my quilt block! God Bless you all.

Hi Charlie,

I never met you, but your sister

Liza and I work together at

Oxford University Press. When I saw her in NYC in December,

she shared some wonderful

stories with me about you - so

I feel that she gave memories

of you to call my own.

I wish I had known you, for you

were so loved by others that

I'm sure I would have treasured

you in my life!

I'm sure that your new life is

filled with peace, love and joy.

Please save a place there for

all who loved you so.

With love from

Murph,

I just wanted to let you know that everyone down here on planet earth misses you. We had our 20th HS reunion over Thanksgiving and everyone shared many stories of the good times we had with you. You were always fun to be around, but I'm sure you know that. Travers, Elsis and Mele really miss you alot. I brought along a copy of our Little League team picture from the Davis Pharmacy team and everyone enjoyed seeing it. I gave it to your Mom on the Sunday after. She really loves and misses you. It was nice to see all the wonderful pictures of you at your Mom's house that were up at your memorial. I forgot about our 4th grade photo. We were so young. You were so young when you left us. We'll always remember Somerville, BF, and Ridgewood High. Soccer was fun, even if while sitting on the bench. You always kept it lively. I hadn't had a chance to see you since running into you at the 4th of July fireworks in 1995. I was looking for my Grandmother along Maple Ave and ran into you. We had a nice talk and that was the last time we saw each other. Well, my Grandmother passed away in 1998 and she was a wonderful lady and a great cook. Hopefully you have run into her in Heaven and she has had a chance to cook you a great meal. You are very missed but will never be forgotten. Peace be granted upon you and your family.

We are deeply sorry for your loss of Charlie. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I didn't know Charlie well, probably would not recognize him if I bumped into him on an elevator, but all of us that were lucky enough to have known him in a small way knew how he could make us laugh. Thanks for all the great laughs "Murph", so many years ago.

I ran cross country in high school and we were lucky to share a locker room with the soccer team of which Charlie was the team practical jokester. Sorry to see you go pal.
