More than ever, the world needs to remember the horror of this atrocity and the heroism which you gave , as a volunteer, to save others lives .

Anniversaries are often times for recollection and thanksgiving which can provide , for those of us who have survived another year, a sense of gratitude and peace.
Nothing will ever erase the memory of the atrocity which took away Glen’s life but this last year has exhibited global trials of survival the like of which the world has never witnessed before or on such a scale.
However, 9/11 will for ever remain the single most horrific day of human horror which took away this wonderful man .
May his memory remain in our hearts for ever.

I recorded a year ago, as visitors to New York, a coincidence of seeing Glen's name on the Fire House mural and then, moments later, the same name on the parapets of the Ground Zero Memorial, will always cause my wife and I to remember a stranger whom we never knew but who sacrificed his life heroically in the midst of an atrocity of unbelievable evil. So another year has passed and our memories of New York are inseparable from the atrocity of 9/11 to which we attach our thoughts of Glen, his family and friends.

8th October 2105
My wife and I arrived in New York from Worcester in England, to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary and have always been drawn to the devastating events of 9/11.
It was inevitable that our first day's activity would be to visit Ground Zero and where, after seeing St. Paul's Church, we found ourselves admiring and paying our respects to the firefighters dedicated on e beautiful bronze mural at the Fire House.
I have no idea why, but my gaze fixed on the name of Glen Winuk and caused me to focus my thoughts on who he was and how did he die.
We then moved across to the South Tower memorial and as I approached the beautiful monument with its names engraved in the parapet, I could not believe that the first and only name I saw was - Glen Winuk.
The chances of that coincidence must be many millions and so I have been draw even closer to coming to discover his life and the sacrifice he made on that fateful day the events of which , I witnessed live on the television in England.
So, if we may, we offer our deepest condolences to the Winuk family for Glen will now ,forever , remain in our hearts as the symbol of that terrifying and devastating act of atrocity.
Man's inhumanity to man was never more so sickenly true.

Another sad day as we remember Glenn; a man of greatness, strength and fortitude.
As stated by Hillel Hazakon, 'whosoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whosoever that saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world.'
Almost 3000 worlds were destroyed on that September 11th thirteen years ago. Glenn, on that day, as he had done so many times in his very short life, was busy saving countless worlds.
May Glenn's memory continued to be blessed.

Dear Glenn and family, I am moved everytime I read about Glenn's bravery. You are truly an American hero. I am a nurse and native New Yorker and understand the obligation he felt to help people in need.I knew Glenn from Oneonta in 1979 when he was my then boyfriend David Basch's suite-mate. I eventually married Dave but sadly he is gone from this world too. I just know that somewhere in heaven Dave and Glenn are having a beer together and listening to the Grateful Dead! R.I.P. 12 years gone but always to be remembered. May his memory be blessed.
This summer I was on Governors Island where there was this yearly art exhibit called Figment. Someone had made a sculptor of the twin towers with all the names, in alphabetical order, of all those who were taken from us way too soon. As I looked through the names, there, towards the end, was Glenn's name. There is phrase often said in Hebrew, when extolling honor to more than one person and certainly to many, 'Acheron, Acheron chaviv,' the last, the last is the most cherished. Glenn certainly was and will always be in our hearts.
As Bill Clinton said when Israeli PrimeMinister Yitzchak Rabin was assassinated, 'Shalom Chaver.'
Goodbye my friend.
We will always miss you.

Glenn:
So, 12 years have passed since 'that gorgeous Tuesday", the 11th of September, 2001. Fascinating how life is fluid, yet, minds and emotions remain static at same time. Brittany is a 'freshwoman' in Buffalo now-called me Tuesday night w a surprise: she wrote her first college English essay on-"9-11-01", and the 'meaning' that historical day had on her life, as she was in 1st grade at Cantiague when you walked into those flames of hell w your brothers from '10/10 house'. she said, 'dad-i get it now! i now know why you and your generation feel the way you do'! she mentioned you, terry farrell and so many others!
justin in 11th grade at halk hollow hills east, as they moved from jfd to the melville fd district! :) hey-they actually 'know' the 2-5-0 trucks by identifier!!! he called me again-'dad, we saw video today. your friends were in in, and so were their families and mike milner'!!! yes, jay, brian farrell and mike, making sure the next generation grasps the messages of 9-11-01, and, accepts the torch of responsibility in never forgetting!!
suffice to say-jay, farrell foundation, milner et al have travelled near and far-neither you nor any of the brothers lost are, nor ever shall be forgotten!
i will say again my friend: 'we all xcould have used your presence alongside each of us these past 12 years! especially me! :)
be well...

I was relaying a story of Glenn to a colleague today, when I had the thought to look online. I'm glad to see this site, and write to share a story I hope Glenn's family and friends will enjoy. I worked with Glenn at HGPH and, at one Maritime Law Assn dinner, he told the story of - as I recall - a date where something happened with a door in his place (it was jammed or locked). So he whipped out rescue equipment and took the door down or apart, with vigor. He thought his response quite typical, but said he didn't see the gal again. He had the whole table laughing. Good guy.

September 12, 2012
Hey Glenn:
Went to your park yesterday morning, 5am. eerie, being a "rea" Tuesday, September 11th, with a magnificent morning awaiting the rising world.
The day was exactly as if it was 11 years ago: sky blue, crisp NY weather. what caught me off guard? In silence of a Jericho dawn, a Gulf Stream roared overhead from Republic Airport: paradoxical as we reflect each year, and, in my momeent of talking, a "plane" over flew us! Yes, life moves on, and, we live each day anew. However, not a day passes when we fail to ponder, perhaps briefly, to think of that Tuesday 11 years ago!
I met one of your law students 2 weeks ago that you mentored. Pure, 1005 coincidence, as her bf is good friends Terry Farrell and family, especially with the Scholarship Foundation! We cried, we laughed!
Yesterday, my son called me moment he got home from school: they are in Dix Hills now, and, a "guy named JAY WINUK" had a video for my children's generation! Justin could not wait to tell me about Jay, and, YOU!
Oceans, skies and memories remain eternal! blessed is the one who only left in Passing memories of grandeur, decency, kindness, and, that empty place in each of our hearts and souls that you once occupied!
You did very, very well for each of us when we had you physically with us! Now, we each harbor your spirit within our own souls: perpetually!
You did "real well" here my dear friend!

Glenn's greatest legacy: DUE TO his death, and the Herculean efforts of his family: my children are walking today in JERICHO, his beloved hometown FOR COMMUNITY GOODWILL! And, beyond knowing he was my friend and confidante, they now KNOW HIM & HIS SACRIFICES along w the other's who refused to leave, and, stayed to help, heal, and die along with fellow brothers in uniforms, or, in most cases, die alongside a stranger, also known as a fellow human being! This was an act of love & bravery, that NONE of us can even fathom! THAT is what my children are doing today, Glenn! Making their own world a better place on "this DAY". Yup, they will have 'aching feet' like you did! And, yup, they will get blisters like you did! BUT: I told them to walk and not complain! Time will heal "these" wounds! Time has merely deminished a tad the pain we feel when thinking about you on a daily basis! OK: for a smile for all: I DID tell them YOU DID complain way toooo much about those little blisters on your feet!!!!!! So...as YOU watch them: laugh. I hope they make you proud. You last saw them in my office on August 26, 2001! They were 4 and 6 years old, and remember my FD friend "with the glasses"! (Sorry, YOU know kids). Smile again: their "Dr. Daddy, an ex-Captain in JFD: has NOT given them permission to complain" to me about their aching feet.....at least NOT TODAY! You served mankind very, very well my dear friend!
And, as I say always: G-d only knows how desperately I could have used your wisdom, legal counsel and calming reassurances that even "bad times will work out OK"!

Glenn was my friend and classmate.
He was always ready to help and give of himself.
When I was being honored in a journal for something truly inconsequential, he called me, congratulated me as if it was something of significance when it ws not and grcaciously said he wished he could be there and instead sent a donation and ad.
It is more than fitting and imperative that he be remembered as a great Hero, a righteous representative of the Jewish people and a protector of Americans and those in need.
May his heroism always be remebered.

April 29, 2011
Why a message today? April 29, 2011? To my best awareness, not a "milestone date". However, to those of us who lost friends and colleagues, who amongst us actually needs a "special date" to recall "that day"? And, who among us, who knew Glenn, need any prompting to pause, reflect, smile, and alternately, shed a tear? Not I!
Annually, I make my lonely and sad pilgrimmage to Gelnn's gorgeous monument, in the park a hop from his childhood home, and a tad further from the beloved Jericho Fire Department: the old house, as well as the
"new big one" as many who never knew Glenn refer to the new building. What a shame that this new, young generation of fire fighters, emergency medical personnel, fellow attorneys, as well as the public at large will never have had the blessing of having Glenn enter their lives: be it for a glancing moment of need in an emergency, during a meeting where his impeccable respect for all opinions silenced those who lacked the attribute of not only "listening" to oppositional opinions, but actually "hearing" said contrarian views, or, as a sarcastic quip shared amongst "pals" sitting around the infamous JFD "Table of Knowledge", laughing, solving global crises amongst us, and, to our emotional devastation all these years later, later, precious, precious moments of friendhsip, taken for granted way too easily. How unfortunate that the "new guys", wherever that title finds one of them, can only try to imagine the gift that Glenn was to us.
Decency, integrity, fair, respect, moral, professional, brave-yet in the non boastful style so refreshing in the world of FD, caring, are a mere beginning of the descriptive terms one can use to describe Glenn. And, yet, they are only mere words! Nothing can fully articulate the feelings we live with regarding Glenn, nothing can accurately convey the sense of bond, brotherhood, love and admiration! those feelings are deep within each of our own hearts, minds and souls, in a place within us that only we can "visit", daily, annually or spiritually.
Glenn: not a human being who knew you, in any of the diverse capacities you earned, learned or obtained will ever be without a tear, and, without a smile recalling you and your incredible impact left for all. "Death is apart of life, so fear not death. We all fear being forgotten in death"! Those words are my own..........and so are these: Glenn Winuk will never be forgotten, because there will never, ever be another Glenn Winuk! And, yes, a commentary, remembrance shared on an April day nearly 10 years later!
REST WELL MY FRIEND!

I read on msn news reports that Glenn is finally being honored by having what he did on 911 2001 being recognized for his "in the line of duty" sacrifice in New York. That Glenn is unique is unquestionable. That he represents the many volunteer fire fighters in America at their best is without doubt the truth of his life and the text of his death. He is honorable in all manners and is deserving of inclusion in the firefighter 343 list to make it 344. The Award for the Heoros Medal of Valor for 911 should be without doubt something that is forthcoming from President Bush. He was and continues to be an outstanding example of Americas Front Line Heros.

I never had the honor of meeting Glenn but I work with his cousin Howard Stein. From the way Howard speaks of his cousin Glenn, he was a wonderful, loving, kind, caring person with a beautiful soul. Even though I didn't have the chance to meet him in person, through Howard I feel like I have. Glenn touched many lives & saved many lives not just on that horrible day of September 11, 2001 but every day before. Those lives Glenn touched are now brighter, more full of life & so much better just by knowing him & by hearing about him. I know what his family went through, my cousin Lisa who worked in the building behind the towers was missing for 9 hours & luckily survived. Sadly to say thousands didn't. I carry Glenn in my heart, his family & friends are always in my thoughts & prayers. May the memories you all share always put a smile on your face & make you laugh cause that's what Glenn would have wanted- love & laughter not tears. May the holiday ordainment I made & sent to his family give you a sense of Glenn being there in sprit feeling his love around you. Thank you Glenn for making the world a better place & continuing to watch over us from above. Glenn, a fallen hero who is missed by all & will never be forgotten. G-d Bless You Glenn! G-d Bless your family & friends! And G-d bless America!

I knew Glenn for many years.
Beginning at Jericho HS, SUNY at Oneonta, around the streets of Manhattan, and with my children at the Jericho Fire Department annual open house.
After introducing my children to Glenn and his warm smile, they would only ride in Glenn's fire truck with him.
It is not easy trying to explain the events of Sept. 11th to children, but it is very easy to explain what a real hero Glenn is.
This past spring when my children went to little league games at the Glenn Winuck Memorial Park in Jericho and walked by the monument in honor of Glenn, they would always look at me and smile.
I know for sure that Glenn is smiling from above at all of us.

Tomorrow would be Glenn’s 42nd Birthday. But as any one who knew him will tell you, to Glenn there was no other choice but the one he made on his last day, September 11th, 2001. It was the amazing strength of Glenn’s character that took him into that blazing tower and voluntarily put the safety of others above his own.
Glenn and I first met when we were just 18 and I have been honored to call him my friend every day since. I am so grateful for the part of our journeys that Glenn and I shared, so blessed to have had Glenn in my life.
Tomorrow I will miss calling my friend on his birthday, but I will celebrate the generous life he led, the many lives he touched and the wonderful person he was. May 5th will always be a very special day to celebrate the compassionate, heroic forty years we had Glenn with us.
Remembering you on your birthday, Glenn,
With love always,

I knew Glen as a martial arts student in Hicksville New York, many years ago. Glen was always very helpful and kind. He was extremely patient with other students, and very willing to help teach others what he knew. Although I was challenged by ADD, Glen was always very happy to help me, especially when others were unwilling to do the same.I will always remember and appreciate his kindness.
my sincere condolences.

It's hard to imagine that it's already been a year. I didn't know what to write or to say to his family on the many occasions that they joined our firm meetings after 9/11. So, I wanted to take this opportunity to say that Glenn was kind, funny, warm and of course a hard worker. He was usually the first one into the office and the last one to leave. But, I will always remember him as a hero.
My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time. Glenn we will never forget you.

I never met Glenn, but went to Jr. and Sr. High School with his brother Jay.
Now that I have read the other entries I have a sense of what a special person he was. I am sorry that I never knew him. I am happy that so many people were privledged to know him.
In times of sorrow, may his family be comforted by the love that has been expressed for Glenn.

I do not know of any better example of a hero than Glenn. It was not the actions he took on September 11, 2001 that made him a hero, but rather his personal character and integrity which led to heroic acts. I doubt that anyone who knew Glenn was surprised to learn that he ran into harms way in an effort to help others.
I was blessed to have known Glenn. He will be missed.

My husband and I both practiced law at Holland & Knight in Jacksonville, Florida. Glenn was one of the first people from the New York office that we met and we instantly felt a bond of friendship.
What I remember most about Glenn was that he made me laugh. I could not think of Glenn without having a smile on my face. We enjoyed his gentle company and witty disposition whenever in New York or when he was in Jacksonville. During a visit to Jacksonville, Glenn went for his first sail ever on a sunny but very windy afternoon on the St. Johns River. When the boat began to sharply heal over, Glenn stopped talking and looked at Bob and said, simply, "we okay?". Bob said "yep" and Glenn just went right on talking where he left off. He knew Bob and just TRUSTED. We got a tiny glimpse of what Glenn's firefighter brothers would have already known and loved about Glenn - that Glenn knew how to trust unconditionally because he knew how to BE trusted unconditionally to do his job.
On September 11, 2001, Glenn did exactly what in our hearts we knew he would do -- he went with those he trusted.
We think about you, Glenn, whenever the sun is sparkling on the water and a strong wind is in our sails. We rejoice in your life and will miss you.

Ernest Hemingway once said....."Courage is grace under pressure."
Glenn demonstrated what courage and bravery is all about. I feel honored to have known Glenn and worked along side Glenn in the Jericho Volunteer Fire Department.
We make a living by what we get and we make a life by what we give. Glenn gave his life while saving others. Glenn is a true American Hero! I will never forget Glenn.

It is hard to express in words the great sense of respect that I hold for Glenn Winuk.
Having met Glenn in the late 1980s when I joined the JFD, I can recall only positive memories of Glenn over the last decade and a half. As a new 'probationary firefighter' Glenn taught me not only a great deal about the fireground, but even more about life. As I matured, it was these latter 'gifts' that I learned to cherish the most.
As it has been said many times, Glenn was truly one of the most sincere, intelligent, giving and good-hearted people this world had to offer. He left a lasting positive impression on everyone he met. This is perhaps best exemplified by the trip that Glenn made to Chicago for my wedding in the Summer of 1998: Of the hundreds of new people that my friends and family met that day, I received more comments about 'that nice man, Glenn from the fire department' than anyone else. Glenn's gentle yet powerful presence was one that even people meeting him for the first time would remember. Glenn had a simple way of enriching peoples' lives.
The loss of Glenn is not only a deep loss for those of us that knew him, but for society as a whole. There are many among us that could learn a lot about the virtues of life from Glenn. I know I did, and I feel that I am a better person for having known him.
Rest in peace, Brother. You will be forever in our prayers.
You will never be forgotten.

It was 1993 and I was on the way to my first fire as a member of the Jericho Fire Department. The crew jumped off the truck and started towards the house where fire was rolling out of the front door entrance. At the front steps, just before putting our breathing masks on, Glenn put his hand on my shoulder, looked me in the eyes and said “stay low and follow me”. Simple words, yet ever so comforting. Glenn had a way with making you feel that way.
What made Glenn so special was that he was real people. He was intelligent, modest, unselfish, caring, and especially genuine. Glenn was a friend and an inspiration to all.
I thought many times after learning of his passing that if ever there was an angel among us, it was Glenn, as he lived his life in a way that touched us all in a very positive and everlasting way.
You will always be missed and never forgotten!

We each met Glen separately in Law School and we both felt the same way about him. We knew he was special. We both became friends with him and our friendship lasted through the years. When we got married and moved to Glen's old hometown of Jericho, he looked out for us. We once had to call the Jericho Fire Dept due to a minor electrical wire problem. The next day we got a call from Glen (who worked in the city)wanting to know if we were ok. On open house day at the Fire Dept he took our kids for a ride on the fire truck. They still remember it and now we tell them they were privileged to ride with a true hero.
Another time we had an alarming situation and we immediately called Glen. He researched it and took care of it by the next day.
Like most everyone who knew him, we had no doubts that Glen would be right there on September 11th.
Glen will be deeply missed and will always be remembered as an example to the rest of us of what we all should be. We are honored to have been his friends.

I knew Glenn for many years through our years at Jericho High School, our local synagogue, and at the Jericho Fire Department.
It seems appropriate to post this in his memory on the start of the Jewish New Year. A time for renewed faith in God, and in people around the world. During this the holiest time for the Jewish people, may God take him into his arms, cherish and nurture him, and continue to keep his memory with all of us, the rest of our days.
God bless Glenn, and God bless every other brother firefighter and police officer that offered and gave the supreme sacrifice.

Glenn-
Today I noticed that Johnny's Fish Grill in the World Financial Center has re-openned. It is where you and I had our first business lunch. I will think of you each time I pass there. I miss you and think of you often, you were a fine lawyer but more important, and more rare, you were a fine human being. When I saw the second plane hit from across the river in Hoboken, I knew that you'd be racing over there to help. I knew that you'd do everyting and give your all to help the people at the Trade Center. The world is a better place because you were here. You leave us all with a sterling example of how to live life in the service of others.

It has been almost a year since the attacks, and the impact of the loss of Glenn has not subsided at all.
Glenn was as good a "person" as was possible. I was fortunate enough to learn an enormous amount from Glenn in many areas. From his passion for Fire Fighting (as a fellow Jericho Volunteer his insights were always on target) to his professional and ethical approach to his career, Glenn was on "top of it all".
But Fire Fighting and Practicing Law were such a small part of what Glenn was and will always be in my mind, Glenn was a compassionate human being, someone I am very honored to have known and spent time with. He is, and always will be missed.

I knew Glenn as both a good friend and a brother firefighter. Glenn was always ready to take the time to help someone in their time of need. It never mattered if they were a new probie firefighter, a casual friend or a complete stranger. Glenn always stood ready to help. It was this trait that cost him his life. Glenn will always be rembered as a true hero, and one of the best firefighters I have ever had the privelage to know. May he rest in peace with God. We will never forget him.

I am a nyc firefighter and would like to give my condolences to the Winuk family.I would like to let them know that Glenn was given the honors of a fallen firefighter. NYC Firefighters and Police Officers lined up on the ramp and saluted as Glenn was brought out of the place where he gave his life trying to save others. God bless him and his family... From a brother firefighter.

I worked for Holland & Knight for only 4 months over 4 years ago now, but despite that short time, Glenn made a deep impression on me as one of the most remarkable people I have ever met - intelligent, kind, considerate, funny, selfless, humble, and brave. I shared a cubicle with his secretary and often assisted her and worked with Glenn. He remains at the top of my list as one of my favorite attorneys to have worked for in my career. On that horrible September morning, Glenn was the first person to come to my mind. I just knew that if he was anywhere near New York that day, he would be running towards the Towers to help rescue people while alsmot everyone else would be running the other way.
For days and weeks after 9/11, I searched the internet, newspapers and magazines for any information on Glenn. After I discovered that he had lost his life attempting to save others on 9/11, I was heartbroken that America had lost not only a great lawyer, but a great man. In the time that has past since 9/11, I have been disappointed to see that Glenn, to the best of my knowledge, has not been honored as a fallen firefighter. He did not rush to those buidlings as a civilian; he went as a trained and skilled firefighter. I recently saw that CNN was looking for nominations for unsung heroes of 9/11. I nominated Glenn and he was selected to be highlighted on air sometime between 9/7 and 9/11/02. I have typed below what CNN asked me to read on air about Glenn.
"I nominate Glenn J. Winuk, a lawyer and a life-long firefighter. After making sure his law firm, just a block from the World Trade Center, was safely evacuated, he headed over to the World Trade Center to lend his assistance as a firefighter, just as he did during the terrorist attack in 1993. He was last seen heading to the World Trade Center and lost his life doing what he loved, helping people. He could have left the area, but he laid his life on the line one last time. He was a firefighter to his cored, and should be honored as a fallen 9/11 firefighter."
Thank you Glenn, you are a true hero.
God bless his family and friends in their loss of a great man.

I knew Glenn from Student Government at the SUNY Oneonta. I did not know him well, but I knew of his strong belief in civic service. Since I learned of his tragic death, I think often of his heroism. He was not a fireman or a policeman, he was a lawyer, but he could not stand by or run from the flame, believing he could help save lives. Among the tragedy of the attack, it is the patriotic courage of Glenn Winuk and others of September 11th that should never be forgotten.
