Maurice Kelly Obituary

Finding Happiness
Maurice Patrick Kelly, a carpenter who was patching a ceiling for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 103rd floor of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, had a tattoo of the Grim Reaper on his arm, a symbol of a harrowing life that only now, after 41 years, seemed to be improving.

Mr. Kelly raised himself in a family of alcoholics, said his younger sister, Claire Dawson. A grandmother in Pelham, N.Y., put the children through parochial school and looked after them whenever their mother, divorced when the children were small, disappeared - out of money or on the prowl with a new boyfriend.

On one visit to their grandmother, when Maurice was 16 and Claire was 12, a chilling telegram arrived: "Due to unforeseen circumstances I will not be able to pick up the children." A year later, Mr. Kelly's mother reappeared, with a man in tow, himself a drinker and gambler. She wanted to take the children to Maryland, but Maurice refused. Instead, he lived on his own, an 11th-grade dropout, trying to care for his father, who died of complications of alcoholism. Years later, when his mother was dying, Mr. Kelly refused to say goodbye.

Mr. Kelly's own marriage ended in divorce, with a 17-year-old daughter remaining with her mother, and two sons, 7 and 10, living with Mr. Kelly on City Island. But by then, he had apprenticed as a carpenter, loved his trade, worked shifts that allowed him time with his boys and had fallen in love again, with 33-year-old Melissa Sponheimer.

"He had a very sad life," said Mr. Kelly's aunt, Dorothy Gould, "and was finally finding happiness."

We only met a few times when I was a child but I still remember you and your two sons coming to visit my father in Pennsylvania.

You and my dad were best friends growing up. I´ll never forget that.

I´ll never forget when my dad was in the hospital and you came to visit and when he passed you told me everything would be alright and you´d be there if I needed anything. You were a great friend and I know that he´s happy to have you in his company once again.

My grandmother Anne passed away around this time last year and when I came to this page I saw the message she left you in 2003 and felt compelled to write something.

I guess I just want you to know you´ll never be forgotten and I wish your loved ones the best and if they are struggling around this time I want them to know like you told me all those years ago, everything will be alright!

Rest In Peace Maurice! God bless.

Maurice,
It is now eight years since you have been gone. Such a long time, yet it only feels like yesterday we were saying our good byes in my driveway after your Labor Day visit. So much has happend since then. So many times I wanted to call you to get your opinion, or just talk to my big brother. Now, I can only imagine what you would be saying. I do my best not to think about 9/11, it just hurts too much. I try and remember all of the good things. How much you loved your children, and what a great dad and brother you were. You were one of the strongest people I have ever known. A lot happend when we were growing up, and I am sure I would not have gotten through it without you. I will miss you forever.

Maurice, although you are no longer with us I've come to know you through Melissa. Over the years I've known her she has shown me pictures, told me stories and cried while talking about the plans you two had made together. She truly loved you very very much. Not only were you finally finding happiness but so also was she. She is just now finding her way again... The tragedy of September 11, 2001 will be with all of us forever but those closest to the victims suffer most... Sleep now in the arms of God; you deserve a rest....

My darling Maurice. What can I say that I miss you so very much and will every day for the rest of my life. September 11 tore us apart and I pray for the day that we will be together again in heaven forevermore.

I LOVE YOU WITH ALL MY HEART AND SOUL AND ALWAYS WILL MY BELOVED SOULMATE.

May you rest in peace Maurice Patrick Kelly.

His employer was my customer for office supplies. In January 2002 I was sent a memo asking to donate money or items to be raffled off at a golf outing from his employer to raise money for his children's college education's. I donated a cordless phone/answering machine combo.

I often think of Mr. Kelly when I am reminded of 9-11. Like today. I say a little prayer for you Maurice and your family. May you rest in peace for ever.

In honor of the victims of the horror of September 11, 2001 a quilt was being made with each person getting their own square cross stitched for them. I got the square of Maurice Kelly. I was able to find his name in the list of people and had to look to see. It seems like he was finally getting everything he deserved, happiness.

It's been 2 years now and I still can't believe it. Maurice was a great man. He was my best friend's father and treated me like a son when I was with them. He was a great dad. He was so much fun to be around and I have a lot of memories of fun times we all had together. I miss him and pray for him and his family.

My condolences to Maurice's family. Having grown up in Pelham and having had the pleasure and honor to know Maurice I can say to his family that he lived above all the diversities that he encountered in life. I could always tell that he believed that he would somehow find his place in this world and would never give up trying to find happiness and love. He found both through his family and friends. You will never be forgotten Maurice. May your legacy live on in the hearts of your family - your courage, strength, and belief that we can overcome all will never be forgotten by those who knew you.

Trees were distributed in church this AM in memorial of some who died in the attack 9/11. Maurice Kelly was my pick, and we planted it in his honor. Mr Kelly represents the determination that we as Americans have to overcome adversity and dificult times. It is a honor for me and my family to be able to remember him in this way. May God bless the USA. We will prevail!

In the year 1999 I met Maurice and ran into him very often at Little League gameshere in the Bronx.

Our sons were the same age.Heloved his little boys so much.He was so

patient with them .Last Memorial Day his son was over my house for a

barberque.Maurice was so mellow so

laid back.I videotaped almost every

Little League game last year.I refuse to watch any of it because I know Maurice is in some the video.

As a result of this nightmare I've

spent more time with my son and

realize all the money in the world

is not enough to compensate such

a great loss.

Mere words will never be able to describe the loss we all feel for those that lost their lives that fateful day. The legacy they leave is one that brought the hearts of ALL Americans together; UNITED in love for their country and their fellow Americans. God Bless Maurice, his family and all those that will live on forever in our hearts.

What a survivor and determined young man Maurice was. We thank him for what he did for others in his struggles to survive and take care of others at such a young age. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Maurice. May his determination to survive and help others, his life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Maurice.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
