Goumatie Thackurdeen Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 23, 2001.
A Vivacious Traveler
All the Thackurdeens — Goumatie, her three brothers and two sisters and most of her 12 nieces and nephews — had settled in South Ozone Park in Queens, where they grew up. Goumatie, at 34 the youngest, moved easily between domesticity and aunthood and the cosmopolitan life of a world traveler.

Small, slim and lively, she was a vice president at Fiduciary Trust who traveled for business and vacations. On the Stockholm-to-Helsinki ferry, she met Stefan Hellman, a Finnish salesman, who accompanied her through Europe and California and visited the home she shared with her mother.

On weekends, she took two or three children to the park or zoo or home to bake cakes. To the grown ones she was a confidante and model of glamor and independence.

On holidays, she often invited everybody — 23 relatives and assorted friends — for dinners of dishes from France, Italy, America and Trinidad and Tobago, the Thackurdeens' native land.

Almost twenty years later, I find myself thinking about Goumi and working with her at the Institute for East West Studies. You made such a personal impact. I really am saddened to think that she has not been here for these last 20 years. What an amazing impact she wouldn't have had if this senseless act had never occurred. Such a shame. Rest In Peace, my friend.

Looking above the crystal clear blue skies, just like 18 years ago this morning, I know you and others are up there. RIP. Came here again to remember you, and tell you that my baby, whose baby shower you organized, has gone to college now.

Goumi,

Your young beautiful smile lives forever. Thank you for giving me a surprise baby shower at the 97th floor. Many of the names in the precious shower card had done with you the same day. RIP.

I never met Goumatie, but came across information on this beautiful young lady through the Smithsonian museum website, and had to write something. I often think about those who lost their lives that day almost 14 years ago. I am an EMT currently for over 20 years, and presently am studying to be an RN because I love helping those in need. I felt impelled to write this to Goumatie because I don't want her or anyone from that day to be forgotten, and hope to one day meet her in Heaven. God Bless

Today I was cleaning out my office and I came across 2 business cards from FTCI colleagues. One belonged to Goumatie Thackurdeen. I met Goumi in her cubicle on August 30. We spoke about web development work, but what was apparent in spades was her sheer love of life, delight in her adventures traveling and seeing the world, an infectious optimism, this young persons spirit was remarkable. God created this precious woman and imbued her with more LIFE than most of us have the capacity to embrace in 80 years. I pray Goumi's family has some peace in spite of such an unfathomable loss. And I give thanks for a family that could bring a person of this character and quality into the world, and that I had the privilege of making her acquaintance.

It has been ten years but I still remember bumping into to you at the farmers market at the WTC and making lunch plans for the following week. Unfortunately lunch wasn't to be. It was a pleasure working with you. You were definitely a go-getter. Everyone at BONY who worked with you was saddened when we heard the news. To Goumi's family we are sorry for your loss and wanted to let you know she will never be forgotten. May her soul rest in peace

I worked with Goumie at Credit Suisse First Boston. She was a fun, upbeat person who was a pleasure to be around. She also came to my 40th birthday party in Manhattan back in 1998. I'm thinking of her today, on the 10th anniversary of the attack.

Goumatie supervised me while I was Credit Suisse FIrst Boston. She was the person I had to go to whenever I had problems during the course of my work and she was always willing to listen and help. I will never forget her. I send my sincere condolences to her family and friends.

Goumie was such an amazing and dynamic person. I worked closely with her at CSFB, and she spoke of her love for her family and her ideas for her career. She was so great, always willing to lend a hand early or late. The world lost someone with huge potential that day.

I knew Goumie at Credit Suisse First Boston, and became friends with her there. It was a great pleasure working with her; she had a ready smile and was someone you wanted to be around. We remained friends after she left Credit Suisse. I will never forget her; 9/11 was a day of tremendous loss.

I had worked with, and trained Goumie when she first became a part of the Global Installation and Training Team at the Bank of New York. She was definitely a go-getter. I had always admired her drive and ambition to succeed. Goumie was a very loving, caring individual who always wanted the best for everyone. She will be sadly missed. I had the pleasure of working with Goumie at Hughes Hubbard where she was the computer systems specialist. She was a delightful and lovely human being. I called her numerous times for computer help and she always had a solution that was successful. I was so sorry to read about her in the New York Times a few months ago. May she rest in peace.

We will never forget Goumi - even though a year has passed.

My wife and I always smile when our daughters go to the playhouse in the back yard of our home. Goumi on one of her visits to our home in Greenwich, always told Victoria - "Your house is the Best in Greenwich!".

I first met Goumi at CSFB and for a time she worked for me during a very trying time. Yet she was always willing to deal with the most difficult personalities for me and carry out the most mundane of tasks, all with a smile - the smile that everybody remembers fondly.

Our condolences to her family - a great loss.

Please accept my belated condolences for the loss of "Goumie". We worked together at Credit Suisse First Boston in 1998 and 1999. She was a wonderful person with lots of energy and always a smile on her face. She was always interested in hearing about new investment strategies about which we discussed some ideas. She will be sorely missed. -- Joel Shandelman

Goumi,

You were so cute, energetic and inspired others to work just as hard as you did.

I remember how excited you were when we were planning Debra's baby shower last year at Fiduciary Trust. When you purchased a beautiful gift set of sterling silver for the baby (John Jr.), you couldn't wait to show me. You seemed to enjoy the shower just as much as Debra did. I will miss our talks about Vegetarian diets to work experiences. I didn't realize until I read about you on this site that you were from Trinidad/Tobago. Tobago is one of the vacations I enjoyed the most. It is absolutely beautiful there. Hopefully, where you are now is just as beautiful, if not more so. Roz has been busy putting a book together for your Mom of our memories of you. I hope it brings her some comfort.

I am glad that you have been found and as of today, your family will hopefully have some closure. I cannot be there physically, but will be there in heart.

We will always remember you, Goumi. God bless you and your family. I always keep them in my prayers.

Love ~ Janice

As I scrolled down the list of those we lost on this day, I came upon Goumie's picture and I immediately recognized her. I can't remember exactly where I worked with her in New York, but I could not forget knowing her; she was such a bright light who left such a great impression on every person's path that she crossed. Though I knew her briefly, I will always remember that smile she always had for everyone. May God keep her safe in his arms and bring the comfort only he can give to her loved ones left behind.

Such a beautiful smile. The world will miss her. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

My condolences to Goumi's entire family. It was a shock to see the article in the Week in Review and read about someone named Goumatie Thackurdeen. I knew a Goumi Thackurdeen when we worked together on Y2K at Credit Suisse First Boston. Whenever you felt down and out you could go and find Goumi and have a good laugh. And we had many over the course of the year. Searched for three weeks to find a photo to confirm that it was Goumi, always thinking that perhaps it was someone else. Finally found the tribute in the New York Times. It is still hard to believe.
