Janice Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2001.
No Ordinary Aunt
Janice Brown's weekends were a hullabaloo of children, her own and her sisters'. Monday through Friday, she was an accountant at Marsh & McLennan. But when Saturday rolled around, she was off to the zoo, the skating rink or the movies with her 11-year-old son, Justin Johnson; three nephews, ages 6, 3 and 1; and a 4-year-old niece.

But Ms. Brown, 34, was not a run-of-the- mill aunt. One nephew, 3-year-old Kyle, had lived with Ms. Brown, a single mother, since he was an infant. Kyle's mother, Dawn, 23, was unable to care for her children, so two live in Flatbush with their grandmother, Juanita Lewis, and the third, Kyle, lives nearby with Ms. Brown.

Janice Brown's sister Tameshia, 24, said that Ms. Brown had stepped into the breach, initially agreeing to take Kyle for a year, after Dawn had already given custody of her oldest to her mother. But, according to Tameshia, Dawn was still a a street person so Ms. Brown took the boy permanently. Ms. Brown spelled her mother, who was also taking care of a third grandchild, every weekend. Last summer, along with Tameshia, she took the whole brood to Disney World, paying for the trip and giving her mother a few days of peace and quiet.

Janice you were the smartest person I knew having graduated from Syracuse University!
Thank you for being someone I could look up to for the rest of my life. You set the bar high. Mommy was so proud to call you her daughter, our hearts broke forever when we lost you so tragically. I know mommy was so happy to see you again when she left our earthly side.

Thank you for being loving, kind, patient and strong!
Thank you for bringing Justin and I to The World Trade Centers every year for every event your job had and showing us the statute of Liberty from your office window.
Thank you for the trip to Walt Disney World, you made our dreams come true! Even though you were busy you made time to show love for the people you cared about!
I'll never forget the baby shower you threw for Dawn, you were so happy to become an auntie. Thank you for being a shining light that could never be dimmed. You taught me more than you'll ever know and I will forever tell the many stories/ memories I've shared with you. Thank you for loving and accepting me like I was your own child. FOREVER in my HEART & SOUL.

Remembering Janice on the 20th anniversary of 9/11....

December 6, 2019

Janice's name came to me as her middle name contains 'Lois' which is my only daughter's name. I am visiting the 9/11 memorial for the first time in December'20 and I want to be able to pay my respects to the victims but also to choose one person who I know something about so I can visit their name on the memorial and remember them for the life they led and what their family and friends lost that day. I will be visiting Janice's memorial and will think about what an amazing, kind, loving and family centred person she was x

Janice Brown - I saw your picture and your name in our local newspaper and it stopped me in my tracks. I have come across many Janice Brown's in my life and thought we ought to start a Janice Brown group since there were so many of us. I think of you every year at this time and now that I have read you loved children and even take in those who are not your biological children, I will think of you every day. I work with kids in foster care and I am awed by family members that step forward and take these children when their bio parents cannot. I hope your children were taken in by your family, as I am sure they were. One day, I hope we can meet - God Bless you and my heart goes out to your family and your children.

JANICE,
YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER. I WILL ENSURE THAT! A MOMENT WILL NOT PASS THAT I WILL NOT REMIND MY THREE CHILDREN OF THE SACRIFICE YOU MADE AND LIFE THAT YOU GAVE WHEN TERROR PLAGUED OUR CITY. YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER. I WILL ENSURE THAT! YOUR MEMORY MUST LIVE ON! YOUR BODY PERRISHED THAT DREADFUL DAY IN SEPTEMBER, BUT YOUR SPIRIT WILL LIVE ON IN OUR FAMILY. DECADES WILL PASS, BUT AS I LIVE AND BREATH, YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER. I WILL ENSURE THAT! MAY GOD CRADLE YOU IN HIS ARMS AS WE CRADLE YOU IN OUR HEARTS.
YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER. I WILL ENURE THAT!

AS THE SMOKE ROSE AS I GLARED OFF MY NEIGHBOR’S TERRACE,
I SAW THE BIRDS.
THEY WERE FLYING IN AND OUT OF THE SMOKE.
I SAW THE BIRDS
I KNOW YOUR SPIRIT WAS IN ONE OF THEM.
FLYING HIGH.
TRYING TO ASSURE OUR WEARY SOULS THAT EVERYTHING WAS ALRIGHT.
I KNOW YOU PEEK IN MOM’S WINDOW MAKING SURE SHE’S OK.
I KNOW YOU WAKE YOUR SON WITH YOUR VOICE EVERY MORNING.
I SAW THE BIRDS, AND IT TOLD ME YOU WERE OK.
I CAN’T REMEMBER YOU EVER HAVING A FROWN.
JUST A WARM, CARING MOTHER, DAUGHTER AND FRIEND.
WHEN I SEE ANY BIRDS,
I SMILE A BIG SMILE JUST LIKE YOUR SMILE.
AND THAT IS MY EVERLASTING MEMORY.

To family and friends of Janice J. Brown may I offer my continued sincere condolences for this loss. I know from experience the heartbreak of death so I know you need encourazgement and comfort. Something that comforts me is knowing that no matter what, there is a GOD who cares and he has promised to comfort all those who mourn by wiping out all tears from our eyes and one day death and sorrow will be no more. (Revelation 21:3-5) Please try to remember that there are people who care and we are praying to the Most High GOD and asking him to bless and comfort you now and in the days to come.

Respectfully yours,

Dear Janice..I just got done reading all the nice things about you. Like a few of the other, the same name was what drew me to your guest book. To read about a cruise you took with some christian friends is a joy. What a gift you gave yourself & your family to accept that Jesus died for you. I hope His joy is the strength of those you had to leave behind.

Janice,

I'm a stranger to you and your family, but not a stranger to losing a loved one. Your life is a mirror of mine. Like you, I'm raising my siblings children and regularly give them social and recreational activities. You remind me to love endlessly, explore and set no boundaries, give unselfishly and to cherish time. God Bless Your Soul and I pray that he comforts and protects your loved ones.

GODSPEED,

Janice,

I think of you daily, of how you blessed so many with your giving spirit. When Jackie introduced both Ethyien and I to the Loughlin crew, we became instant friends. I remember all the weekend trips we took together. And when you introduced me to the hat lady. She would get the cuttest things for Justin and Wesley. I think about the time we went to Lord and Taylor's via the subway during a snow storm. The mascarade party that your investment team had.The cruise with the CLC crew! I still have the video of us all praising the Lord and taking over the ship!! Thank you friend, for even on your departure from this earth you have managed to connect me with one of your friends that you worked with. Our children are pals and we saw one another at your homegoing ceremony. When our boys get together, Louisa and I talk of you often. I know that you are watching from above. You can see how much everyone misses you here. But we will meet again my friend.

We used to take the crowded south campus bus to our Skytop Apt talking about how our day had gone.We laughed and joked about how cold it was in Syracuse...coudn't wait till May for the snow to be gone! I speak for many of your friends who may not know about your passing, we will always miss that gapped tooth smile of yours:-) You will forever be in our thoughts and hearts

Both I and my husband remember Janice well from our college days at Syracuse University. Janice (J-Nice)was a very sweet young woman and alot of fun to hang out with. I did then as I do now consider her my sister. Deepest sympathies to the Brown family, may God bless you in your time of loss and sorrow, especially the little ones.

Dear Brown Family,

Although I did not know your loved one, Janice Brown, I read about her in the NY Times tributes and she sounds like a wonderful human being. I hope she is at peace.

I feel a kinship since we have the same last name, Brown, although I am a white woman from Mississippi. I have grown children and my heart goes out to her mother, sisters and the children she left behind, her own and the little one she had taken into her home. God bless you all.

May God continue to Bless and keep Janice's family. I only knew her for a short time, but it was memorable. We lived on the same block in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn. It was back in 1992. We were both going through some things and we took solace in each other. Our sons are the same age and they used to play together. We eventually moved away and lost contact. I am saddened that I did not continue to keep in contact. I pray you are in a better place now with no suffering. Peace and God Bless.

I met Janice while working at Marsh & McLennan over 12 years ago. She was not just a co-worker--she was also one of my best friends. I cannot begin to express how much I miss her. It still seems like a dream. I pray that God will continually give me strength and also her son and the rest of her family.

May Janice's warm and caring heart, her life and love live on in you. May warm memories of times together lighten the sorrow in your hearts. Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Janice.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I remeber Janet from Bishop Loughlin H.S. I used to "bother" her as all boys do in high school. I rememeber Janet well. Hearing of her passing recently just made really sad and I have no other feelings to add on top. Seeing that she became a major caretaker of children just reminded me of how "patient" she was with my silliness. My heart and soul go out to her family and close friends as I haven't seen or heard from Janet since 1983 (graduation), I know these people miss her deeply and are feeling her loss every minute of every day. To you Janet I say God bless and may he allow to continue to "take care of those you have helped"
