Gene Maloy Obituary

One Last Talk With Mom

When he was a senior in high school, Gene Edward Maloy had an open block in his schedule. He needed a subject to fill it. His mother, Merlyn, thought she had a good idea: typing. He looked at her, stunned, and said, "Typing is for girls." But nothing else fit, and so typing it was.

Years later, he thanked his mother. The course came in handy as he became enraptured by computers. "Computers were his passion," she said. When he visited his parents as an adult, it would be, "Hi, Mom; hi, Dad," and he would vanish into the room with the computer and not be heard from for hours.

Mr. Maloy, 41, who lived in Brooklyn and was an analyst for Marsh & McLennan in the company's technology department, had a unusual bond with his mother.

"Gene and I had like a psychic relationship," Mrs. Maloy said. "I would be meaning to call him about something, and before I did, he would call me up and say, 'O.K., Mom, what's up?' He would just know."

On the morning of Sept. 11, Mrs. Maloy felt this urge and decided she didn't care if she was late for work. She had to speak to her son. She got him on the phone, they chatted, and she went off to work. "I'm glad I did that," she said. "I had that last conversation."

Actually it wasn't until 2020 that I found out the Gene was a 9/11 victim. I coached Gene on my Babe Ruth baseball team in Manassas, Va. in the mid-1970s. He was a quality kid then, and I was not surprised to learn that he was a success as an adult. It was an empty feeling when I learned he passed on 9/11, and was made real when I visited "Ground Zero". My condolences to his family and friends, even after 20 years.

a week prior to 9/11-I ran across your number we had not spoken in a long time. I held onto the paper with every intention of calling you but I did not. When 9/11 happened I volunteer my time never knew you were in there until I looked at the names just to see if I knew anybody and did...you. Wow I wish I had called.....

Barbara, I remember the very same lesson in the same class with you and Gene. He had such a passion for caring for others and was a genuine friend...as you too exhibited those traits. His lesson that day helped me work for the needs of those less fortunate and you both continue to be an inspiration that NOTHING is too difficult. God bless the family of such a wonderful fellow. I never think of anyone playing the cello without thinking of Gene beside my viola. Becky Brauning Roberts

I came upon this by accident while browsing the internet looking for a childhood friend. I remember you from Elementary School, in the late 60's you got up at Show & Tell, taught us all "We shall overcome." I am sorry that this happened to you, I remember you as very, very smart and very, very nice. Be blessed.

If we didn't know it before, every day is a gift and I know that you are "the" shining star that shines so bright. Missing the good old days, but cherishing the ones ahead.

Gene, I played viola and violin in the same orchestra with you playing cello. Every anniversary I thank you for your talent, your quick wit and your family who knew my family well....I pray for your fiancee' as well as your parents. I have tried to do something for someone every day because you're not here to do them - I know you would. Blessings to you and yours - you will never be forgotten.

Gene and i worked together at Dial A Matress in the mid 1990's. Gene was very nice, friendly and easy going. Concerned for my health he created a work out program for me. That's the kind of person he was. My prayers go to his family and friends and all who knew him. Gene, you are missed...

Life changes within a wink of the eye and the last year has been quite that! To make a long story short - Curtis and I were married on August 7, 2010. We had a tribute to you in our wedding gift book and our walk down memory lane that was shown to our guest, families and friends. After 28 years apart and life taking us down the roads that were set for us, he realized those GSU times were the best of our lives and we decided not to waste anymore. You may not have been there in body, but you were thought about that day and many days, especially yesterday. We love you and we miss you!

Last year this time, I didn't realize I had lost a great friend, so September 11th was a day to think of others and their loss. This year, I thought of, as I often do, my loss. I'm still thinking of and missing you.

How can I begin to express the heartache I feel after finding out about a great loss. I went to extend my sympathies to my extended family on the loss of their husband and father (James E. Bell - husband to Olivia Bell, father to Curtis, Gwen and Glenn Bell) over the past weekend and found out about a terrific friend who was taken away years ago. My heart is heavy. Not believing, I consulted the internet to find out more. To my disappointment, there I found my friend. Gene, our circle of friends and myself had great times on the campus of Grambling State University during the early 80's. He was a great swimmer and spent many unsuccessful hours trying to teach me to fine tune the skill. My mind goes back to the weekend he went home to Pineville with me. And while reflecting with my mother, she remembered he stated he didn't like sweets, but during the night he found his way to the kitchen and ate plenty of sweets and drank all the milk. We laughed. I cried. I also remembered the time he picked me up and put me in the trunk of that Pontiac. He drove around campus and took me out in front of Jones Hall. The people outside had a great laugh. I remember his sense of humor! I searched for the pictures we took as he attended the Le'Change Ultime Delta Sigma Theta Christmas party. I had to see his face again. It hurts so much. I guess, because I often wondered where life led him. I don't remember who left GSU first, but he was always not far from my mind.

To Mr. and Mrs. Maloy,
Please know that prayers from Louisiana are still with you today. Gene was a great guy and it was my blessing to have known him. Thanks for sharing him with those of us down south. I am sure anyone who was touched by him, will never forget him.
Many prayers and blessings.

I didn't know any of the victims killed in the terrorist attacks, but I would like to express my deep sorrow and likewise deepest condolences to those who have lost someone on that horrible day.

I was very impressed by Gene's story. I am so sorry about what happened to him and so many others. Who knows? The many times I hung around the WTC at lunch time and after work, I may have came across Gene at one time or another.

To his mother, Deborah Maloy, I know no words I can say can take away the pain and tremendous loss you are feeling, but I hope it gives you some comfort to know that there are people, like myself, who care about what you are going through.

May the memory of brother Gene E. Maloy stay alive in the hearts and memories of you and your loved ones. Gene's spirit lives on forever.

Keep the faith. Satan is not going to win.

Love,

Stephen McMillian

I wrote a little something so everyone will know Gene as I know Gene. He is a special person and everyone should know.

Hidden Battlefield Warrior

I hear his words throwing Operatic Thunder,

One could call him Othello

Choosing his words like a melody

A modern day analytical warrior

Great to many, amazing to some

He spun the words of truth

“Your life is not always yours to measure”

Throwing operatic thunder one could call him Nichii

This warrior gave more than the spoils of his battles

He slung knowledge like a sword,

Spewed wisdom that was not comparable to his years,

Thoughtful kind warrior

Fought battles of the commoner,

Modern day Robinhood

Stole knowledge that he so willingly gave,

Throwing operatic thunder

I call him friend

He’s with me always.

Othello

Nichii

Friend

Say this with Thunder

I did not know you at all. You are a complete stranger. However tears runs down my eye as I look at this web page. I am re-entering the U.S. Military as I type this. I cannot begin to understand this loss to your friends or family. I say a prayer for who may have been your friends or family. I pray for the soldiers on duty now. This nation will have its victory over those who stand against us. Rest in Peace.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
