Nurul Miah Obituary

The Voice of a Deer
Long ago in Bangladesh, Nural Miah's grand father hunted birds in the jungle. The tradition lapsed when the family came to New York, until Mr. Miah, an audiovisual technologist at the World Trade Center, took it up with a fire-hot passion. He taught hunting to Mohammed Sadat, his 15- year-old cousin, and took him on weeklong hunting vacations.

"We expressed our feelings," Mohammed said. "We both talked about whatever we had on our minds. Three years ago, he talked about this girl, Shakila. The parents didn't want her to get married to him. So he would leave a deer caller on the machine and when she heard the deer's voice, she'd know."

But Mohammed worried last year when Mr. Miah said he and Shakila were to be married. She was a computer technician who also worked at the trade center. "I confronted my cousin," he said. "I said, 'You're going to be married and leave me?' "

Instead, Mrs. Miah drew Mohammed in, inviting him into their new Brooklyn home, furnished with antiques and eight-point antlers. The hunting in the woods, just Mr. Miah and Mohammed, continued. "It was peaceful," he said. "All about nature. All about relaxing. He watched out for me. He was like a brother."

I love you more than you know & am deeply sorry for what happened in 2001. I too know what it is like to lose someone....in 1999 i lost my mother (33) who past away from illness. Life is fragile & you should enjoy it to the fullest. They are in a better place. God bless you & your sister.

Dear family of Nurul Huq Miah. I was privileged to sing in the Rolling Requiem performance in Columbus (Ohio). At the church in which it was performed to over 1300 persons, SRO, we each selected a name to wear and to honor. I have been wearing Shakila Miah's memory since then. In trying to research her, I have been led to you. I hope you have some consolation in knowing that she is worn over my heart, and will never be a stranger. My love and prayers are with you. I was deeply saddened when I learned that Miah had been a victim of the devastation at the World Trade Centers. I had only met Miah briefly when he came to hunt with my cousin during the hunting season here in the Northern Neck area of Virginia. He seemed a very sweet and kind person and we miss his smiling face. Rest in peace my friend.

The moment I heard of the Miah's tragic passing, my heart bled. I worked with Miah at Johnson & Higgins at 125 Broad Street on the 40th Floor. He was such a sweet, kind, gentle youngman. I pray for his family, which I spoke to his mom a couple of months ago, and as expected, she was crushed. GOD BLESS.

Miah was a friend of my dad's, Steven P. Morello. My father quite frequently shared stories about his friend at Marsh, and his beautiful wife to be. My parents were invited to their wedding and came home to tell us how happy the couple were and what a wonderful time they had. My father loved Miah. On September 11th, I hope my dad was with Miah and Shakila, with his friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Miah - I will never forget you. You gave Ricky (my son) a stuffed frog which we still have. It is hanging on my wall unit. They say frogs are good luck. Well, that will always be our good luck charm thanks to you.

Rest in peace. Your J&H friend!! Always!!! Maria

Miah was always there to help me set up my training classes at work, even after I gave him a hard time (kiddlingly). We always chatted about eachother's lives and he was a wonderful person who sincerely loved his wife and his life. He was my very first thought as I ran from the buildings that horrible day and I continue to think of him each day. My heart goes out to his family, to whom he spoke of often. He will live on in my memory and heart.

Rest in peace forever, Miah. I remember him from my Johnson & Higgins working days at 125 Broad Street. Then, he was one of the excellent Executive Floor (40th) greeters of VIPS in the Reception Area. I worked on the 39th Floor and have many pleasant memories of talking to him. I especially remember him telling me about his rather long commute to downtown NY. I'll always remember him with great fondness -- he had a wonderful manner with everyone. The Johnson & Higgins people were always the best in the industry. My prayers are with his family.

Our hearts cry with you in your loss of Nurul. We are deeply sorry.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

"Miah" as he liked to be called at work was a wonderful colleague who always had a smile and a good word when he helped us set up for training classes. And I'll never forget his kindness in showing me where Sean Penn's death scene was filmed in the company's old building downtown in the 1993 movie "Carlito's Way." God bless you, Miah.
