Lamar Hulse Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2001.
Honored His Grandmother

Lamar Demetrius Hulse commanded attention on the basketball court. He was 6 feet 4 inches tall and nearly 300 pounds. Friends called him "Big Man." He could have commanded attention at parties, too. But usually he preferred a quiet evening at home listening to music or watching television, his mother said, especially if the Lakers were playing.

In October 2000, Mr. Hulse moved out of his mother's apartment in Harlem to live with his grandmother, Gertrude Hulse, 74, who lived 21 blocks to the south. "He moved in with her because she was alone," Linda Hulse said, "and so I could give his room to my younger son."

Mr. Hulse, 30, was a security guard for Advantage Security, which assigned him to Marsh & McLennan in 1 World Trade Center. Though he often stayed at his girlfriend's apartment in the Bronx, he always called his grandmother to check in. "He would always pick up my medicine, go to the store for me," she said. "Every payday he would call me and say, `Do you need anything, Grandma?' "

In that apartment, five blocks north of Central Park, tears welled up in Gertrude Hulse's eyes as she picked up a year-old Valentine's Day card from her living room counter. "This is the last card he got for me," she said.

We recently visited the memorial. The whole experience made me feel awestruck and humbled for the sacrifices that were made. I searched the names of my maiden name out of curiosity. I found Lamar's name and starred at his photo for quite a while. I so want to find out how this fine young man fits into my family tree. If anyone has any info, I would love to hear from you. Families are so important.

As one of the 2 million bikers to DC 9-11-13 I had the honor to ride representing this great American. We were issued name tags to wear for each of the 9-11 victims. Mine will remain on my helmet as a reminder of our nations loss.

To all his friends and family.especially his Mother and Grandmother

I know today is going to be a rough day. its been ten years and I hope the hurt has lessen a little bit. I also hope the Memorial at Ground Zero helps as well. It looked very nice on TV. Lamar looks like he was a nice guy, somebody you would want to bay a beer for. I will pray that someday your grief will be lessened and remember that that Lamar smiles upon you everyday

My name is Nelson Sarweh and Demetrius and I grew up on the same block 113th st. He was a couple of years older, but all of us were good friends playing basketball together. He was a big Laker fan and I was big Celtic fan so we used to have fun arguments. We all on 113 st. will always remember Big "D" take care of yourself big boy!

Lamar was my best friend in this world. I grew up with him and shared an entire lifetime of memories. On 9-11 that was not taken away. Coming to this site today marks the first time that I feel comfortable enough to share the grief I have felt for a year. I miss my friend. I loved Lamar. Everyday my daughter has to see his picture on the wall. He died before she could really bond with him so that's what I'm going to do make sure she remembers. I'm also glad there are others who will remember too. Peace and Love. We miss you Dee and know you will watch over us all.

I am a student at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem North Carolina. During or Chapel Ceremony to remember those lost on September 11th, sheets of paper where distributed with the names of victims. I recieved Mychal Lamar Hulse. I felt compelled to learn more about this man. Though I have never meet him, I wish I had had the privledge. I will be in NYC for an internship this Winter and I intend on visiting Ground Zero. Mychal and his family will be in my prayers then and now. God's Blessings.

I thought that out of respect I should view the list of names of those who were lost on September 11th. When I saw the list I was overwhelmed. The size gives me chills. I decided to look for my own last name as just a place to start. I found it. I did not know Lamar but he is now in my prayers. My mothers name is Linda too. I wish this never happened to our country. I just want to cry because it is so wrong. I will pray for Lamar & his loved ones.

I had the honor of creating a quilt square for Lamar Hulse that was included in the United in Memory quilt being created as a tribute to those who lost their lives as a result of the 9/11 attacks. Unfortunately, I didn't have the privilege of knowing Mr. Hulse. From what I have read about him, I think I probably would have enjoyed knowing him. My thoughts go out to his family.

My deepest condolences goes out to Lamar's family and friends. I'am the Mother of Andrew Bailey's daughter. Andrew always spoke of Lamar and even though I never met him I felt like I knew him personally for years. Lamar, Andrew, and the rest of the family of Advantage Security will never be forgotton.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
