Rudolph Riccio Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2001.
Knowing What Matters
When Rudolph Riccio was a teenager, his parents got sick and died 13 months apart. His older sister, Meg, took care of him and of their younger sister. One day when Mr. Riccio was 17, he approached Meg and asked her for $80 to buy a pair of boots.

"I said to him, 'Rudy, I can't give you money for boots. I don't have that kind of money," said Meg Durrance, now 44. "He looked at me and said, 'If I work, can I then buy the boots I want?' I said yes. It was his money."

So, Mr. Riccio worked a paper route for a few weeks and saved up the $80. But he did not buy the boots. Instead, he left the money for his sister in an envelope on the kitchen counter. A note inside the envelope read, "We need the money to buy food, not to buy boots."

Ms. Durrance cried. She still cries, retelling the story so many years later. Mr. Riccio went on to finish high school and take some computer classes in college. Eventually, he got a computer job with Cantor Fitzgerald's eSpeed division. He was 40, married to Joanne Riccio, and lived in the Bronx, where he had lived all his life.

"It's like I've lost a child," Ms. Durrance said. "We had a connection most brothers and sisters don't have. We learned to rely on one another."

Rudy,
I keep you in my daily prayers. By doing this I hope you know how much you are loved and missed. By doing this I also keep my memories of you with me always. Your kindness and your warmth will never be forgotten or replaced. I´m so thankful that I shared our family together.
Rest in peace and may God bless you and all the souls that perished on that September morning.

Your cousin,
Ray Riccio

Rudy,
Today is a day for all to remember those that perished on September 11, 2001. For me today is also a reminder of how we can loose a loved one so quickly and not have a chance to tell them how they have been so special to us.. We take for granted that our loved ones are doing well and we will call them when we have time. Then all of a sudden a tragic day changes so many lives forever.
Rest In Peace with your Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa, and all our Riccio family that has past on.
Miss you and I keep you in my daily prayers,
Your Cousin Raymond.

Rudy, They say time helps us to heal. While it may do that , it doesn’t make us feel less sorrow for not having you with us. You are missed by all who knew you and you will always be a part of our lives. I wanted to send you a message and say how you touched the lives of all the people that were blessed to know you. We are better for sharing a part of your life. You are in my heart forever. Your cousin Raymond

I knew Rudolph and Joanne well as they would shop in the the butcher where I was employed during my High School and College years. I, as well as my employer would sincerely look forward to Rudy and Joanne making their Saturday appearance to pick up their order. We would have the most enjoyable and humorous conversations. I cannot think of; or haven't met two of the most warm and beautifully delightful people in my life! Rudolph was the epitome of a true gentleman; and I display( in my classroom) his (traced ) name from the memorial every year for my students to see! I want them to know who Rudolph Riccio is! I want them to also know Joanne and what a lovely person she is as well! They made the perfect couple; and Rudy showed me that a man can be sensitive, peaceful, and loving of his wife, his life, and show other people how we all desire to be treated; with love, respect, and dignity! God Bless You Rudolph! God Bless You Joanne! -Dean

My name is Henry J. Riccio, I was born 1963 in Newark, NJ. Upon seeing Rudolph's name listed among the missing, I often wondered if we are somehow related. It's like reading about one of my immediate family. R.I.P. Rudolph, May God Keep You Forever.

Rudy, I will always remember you as a kind and gentle person. You were an older cousin who I would see occasionally but I could talk with you about anything. From our love of the New York Yankees to our memories of our grandparents home on Westchester Ave. in the Bronx. I will always be thankful to you for all the trips you made to visit my dad prior to his passing. You had my dads first name and I was born on your dads birthday. I miss you and think of you often. You are always in my prayers. Your cousin Raymond.

Visited Garden Of Reflection in Yardley, PA 08/04/13, which is a tribute to the 9/11 victims. I saw the name Rudolph N Riccio etched in glass. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to the family. I also pondered if he may have been a relative. It is a beautiful & serene place.

Today at the high school where I teach, we honored those who died in the horror of 9/11. Today, I proudly wear Rudy's name tag throughout the day and remember him in prayer and thought. I wish his family peace as they move forward and pray that our country never experiences this horror again.

I MET RUDY RICCIO, NICKNAMED 'RHINO' WHEN WE USE TO WORK AS TECHS FOR WESTERN UNION AT 600-3RD AVE, IN MANHATTAN. THE BUNDLING SITE WAS CALLED UDQ OFFICE. HE WAS IN CHARGE OF THE TELEX SWITCHING CENTER. HE ACQUIRED THE NAME 'RHINO' BECAUSE AT TIMES HE WOULD GET STREAMED, START TO ROCK ON HIS FEET BACK AND FORTH, HUNCH HIS SHOULDERS, AS IF HE WAS PLAYING DEFENSIVE BACK ON A FOOTBALL TEAM. THEN HE WOULD HAVE A HEARTY LAUGH. SOME HOW THE NICKNAME STUCK WITH HIM, AND HE EVEN USED IT TO CALL IN AN ORDER OF PIZZA. HE TOLD US THAT STORY ONE DAY AND WE ALL HAD A GREAT LAUGH. RUDY HAD A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR, AND WAS HELPFUL IF ONE NEEDED IT. GOD BLESS-RUDY

Rudy was the best man at my wedding in 1976 when I married his best childhood friend Jeffrey Rauch. I remember him as a quiet, kind and gentle man, who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. On this 10th anniversary of his death I honor his memory and send my continued condolences to his family.

As a child he was a gentle and kind person, and he didn't change much as an adult. Despite the loss of his parents at a young age, he asked for little and gave much!

I worked with Rudy when we were both at Knight-Ridder Financial. He was in New York and I was in Boston but we conversed regularly concerning business and I enjoyed our phone conversations and when I saw him on trips to New York and Leawood, Kansas. He will be greatly missed! Rest in Peace!

Rudy I spoke to you many times from your office in New York to mine in Leawood Ks. We developed a friendship that will always last. Knight-Ridder was the company we both worked for. Such a sweet man, kind caring and devoted to his family. You are so missed, may God be with you and your loving family.

Rest in Peace always.

Rudy,

You thought my son to play catch, to use a computer, you took him to the Zoo and the last time he was with you you took him to the towers and had him look up.

You meant so very much to him and I. I have never met anyone as caring and loving as you. We miss you greatly. You will never be forgotten by us.

Rudy was like an older brother to me when I first started at Knight Ridder. He always made time to help me out with whatever problem I was having. He is responsible for some of the better attributes that have stayed with me to this day. I wish I could have had the chance to say goodbye, but I guess this will have to do. Thank you for everything Rudy. We love you and will never forget you. God bless you.

THIS WAS MY BIG BROTHER, MY HERO ALL MY LIFE, THE ONE I WENT TO FOR COMFORT AND SOLACE, ADVICE AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT. HE TOOK CARE OF ME WHEN OUR PARENTS DIED WHEN I WAS 13. TOO MANY MEMORIES TO RECALL HERE. JUST KNOW THAT HE WAS ONE OF THE MOST KINDEST, LOVING AND UNSELFISH PERSON I HAVE EVER HAD THE PRIVILEGE TO KNOW.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
