Manuel Asitimbay Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 24, 2001.
A Dream Realized
Manuel Asitimbay's life revolved around his children – two 13-year-old twin boys he had not seen since they were 6 months old, an 8-year-old boy he supported financially even though he was not his biological father, and a 4-year-old son who lived with him and his wife, Carmen Mejias, in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Mr. Asitimbay, 36, was an immigrant from Ecuador who was proud to work as a cook at Windows on the World. He took such joy in the food he prepared and carefully arranged on the plates of his customers that he would take pictures of his favorite dishes to show to friends and relatives.

But Mr. Asitimbay's obsession was his children. Every month for the last 12 years, he sent part of his salary to Ecuador to help support the three older boys, who were cared for by an aunt. He often sent them care packages and once sent an upright piano and a guitar because he wanted them to appreciate music as much as he did. His dream was to bring them to the United States, said Dennis Diaz, a union organizer with Local 100 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union, who has befriended the Asitimbay family.

Mr. Asitimbay's goal was accomplished because of what happened on Sept. 11. With help from Local 100 and Senator Charles Schumer's office, the children arrived in New York two weeks ago.

I "adopted" Manuel's flag here in Tempe Arizona, back in 2015, because when I arrived at the Tempe Healing Field, for some reason his flag was the only one lit up by the rising sun!
See my photos in earlier tributes.
I'll be looking for his flag again this year, 2021 - the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Hello Dad today is April 7. It's 10:01pm and I just started to think about you and it makes me so sad to know you are not here with me because I really need you. It's hurts to wake up everyday and not have you here with me. You are always in my mind but today I took a minute to think about how life is down here without you and how hard it has been not to have you here with me. It's still so hard for me to accept the fact that you will never come back but I still hold on to my hope that one day l will see you again. When that day comes I will ask you for a hug and I will make sure that I will hug you so hard in my arms that I will never let you go. There is not a day I wouldn't like to hear an advice from you. Hoy me edado en cuento cuanta falta me hace un consejo suyo y que no Daria por escuchar de su voz un consejo. Como duele no haver podido despedirnos y aun mucho mas no haverle accompañado a su cita con la oscurridad.

I never had the courage to go on my fathers page to write and thank each and everyone who has took the time to write on my fathers guest book I really appreciate it from the bottom of my heart. Till this day I can't sleep at nights without missing you and every night I always think about how my life could have been with you here with me. Every chance I have I go in to this page to see the messages from people of every different place that have written and lighten up a candle for my father and really brings me joy to my heart to know he is remembered by others. I hope one day I could meet each and everyone of you in person and thank you for still being people with big hearts, for praying for a man that you guys never met yet all of you had the time and liberty to write in his guest book. Thanks Texas, Illinois, Oregon, Boston Massachusetts, New York and each and every other state thank you from my heart.

I have written in this guest book for Manuel for the past few years, and I wanted to keep that tradition going. I listened closely to the memorial in New York today to make sure I heard them announce Manuel's name. It's been three years since I've learned of this incredible man, and ten years since he has been gone--but I will never forget. I will keep his memory with me in my heart even though I was never fortunate enough to know him. I wish his family and friends only the best today and every day. God bless, stay safe, and take care.

For the past two years, I have written on here in remembrance of Manuel. I was never fortunate enough to have met him in person, I only learned of his life when his name was on a bracelet I received at my high school. Since then I have carried Manuel in my heart, and tomorrow when I wake up, I will put my bracelet back on and I will remember this man and what his life stands for. God bless him and God bless his family. I wish you all the best and I hope you are doing as well as you can be doing. Two years later, and I haven't forgotten Manuel. And I never will.

I signed this guest book last year, and I wanted to sign it this year as well. I mentioned how my school hands out bracelets on this day with the names of four people who unfortunately passed away. Manuel was one of the names on my bracelet last year. I was actually in charge of making the bracelets this year, and it just so happened that Manuel turned up on the list of names that I had. I was reminded of how impacted I was last year reading his name to myself, and I just wanted to say something quickly this year as well. Even though I did not know this man, I still hold him in my heart and think about him always. I wish peace to his family and friends, especially on this terrible day. I hope that as the years go on and I write in this guest book, I am able to see that his family and friends are still holding strong. God Bless You, and God Bless this heroic man.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

Unfortunately, I was never able to meet Manuel, and I only learned about him and his life today.

Every September 11th, my High School has an assembly to honor those who lost their lives. At the end of the assembly, every student receives a paper bracelet with the names of four people who died on September 11, 2001. Manuel was one of the names on my bracelet.

I have spent all day looking at his name, wondering who this person was, and how he lived, and what he was about. So when I got home from school, I decided to look him up, and finally, I have come to this page.

To his family, if you are reading this, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I cannot even begin to imagine the pain that you have been through, and continue to go through. I pray that you will have the strength to continue to move forward, and I know that you will never forget him. And as of today, neither will I.

I feel very lucky to have had this man's name on my bracelet, but I am very sorry that it had to be there.
