Donald Gregory Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 29, 2001.
A Family Man's Gifts
Amanda Gregory had her father's sense of commitment. Her sister, Sara, had his creativity. And their brother, James, had his love of sports.

Donald H. Gregory, 62, gave many gifts to his children, one of which was loving their mother. He kissed her at the start and end of each day. "He was just a man of quiet faith," said his wife, Maureen. "He had a generosity of spirit that extended to all in our family. Most importantly, he taught to believe in yourself." He believed in Amanda, 20, who wants to work for NASA; Sara, 19, who loves art; and James, 14, who plays soccer, basketball and baseball with a passion.

Since the trade center fell with him in the 104th-floor office of Cantor Fitzgerald, in the north tower, people have sent notes to Mr. Gregory's family in Ramsey, N.J.

"Because I was not with him during the day, I didn't know the extent to which he raved about the children," his wife said. "That is the essence of a family man to me."

To the wonderful Gregory family. I will never forget sharing this day and the years after with you. James you were my hero then and you are now. You taught me your English teacher how grief can be endured. I have published a book to help children living with grief from the loss of a parent and I have dedicated it to you. We would not grieve if we had not loved and although we are mortal love is eternal. Thank you!

Dear Gregory family,
My name is Debbie Zobrist. I live in St. Louis and received a very special birthday gift the other day. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, someone donated almost 3,000 flags to be placed on the grounds of Art Hill in Forest Park. The tribute was up for a week but I was not able to get to see it. My sweet sister made sure I had a memory from it and bought me one of the flags for my birthday. The one that will forever stand in my back yard has your husband/father's name on it and I wanted you to know how much I will honor his memory by keeping this flag flying.
They say time heals all wounds. I hope your family has been able to face the days and years following the loss of Donald with the knowledge that one day we will all be together again.

God bless,
Debbie Zobrist

To the Gregory Family: I posted here back in 2002 and still think of Donald (and wear my Memorial Band bearing his name) often. It touched my heart to see your family members placing flowers at the memorial this morning on live TV, and later found the clip I uploaded in a separate post, which briefly shows Donald's name. I hope the memorial helps to bring closure and comfort you in your unimaginable loss. God bless all of you.

Donald and I grew up together at 1515 Metropolitan Avenue in Parkchester, We played together and when I attended the famous boareding school, St. Thomas Choir School in Manahatten, he followed me. He enjoyed a wonderful boy soprano voice as he sang the great classical music of the church at St. Thomas 5th Avenue, under the direction of Dr. Candlyn. He was a bright, caring and giving young man. I am sorry not only for the loss of this fine gentleman but sorry for his family and friends who I know still miss him dearly. The Choir School and its alumni honor his life and extend our sympathies to all his friends and lovrd ones.

Sara, Don't know if you ever read this or if you'll remember me, but I wanted to see how you were and hope that you and your family are doing well. I looked up your dad once before, and just hope you're doing ok and keeping your head up. When I read this about you loving art, all I could remember was when you took my garbage can to do some crazy mold art project! Hope all is well-- Love, Lisa (wpu freshman roommates 2001)

Dear Maureen and Children,
As we near the 7th Anniversary of 9/11, I hope you and your family are doing well. I will never forget this day as it is my birthday. This day will stand in infamy as for the lost we all suffered as friends, family and a nation.
Maureen, I do not know if you will remember me or not but our children attended school at St. Paul's in Ramsey.
I will remember you and your family in my prayers.

Donald - I can't believe it is so long that you & Dave and all the guys are gone for 5 1/2 yrs. You know I'm sure as I'm sure Dave knows that you are so very missed.
I do want to let you know that Maureen & I have become good buddies. We see and talk to each other very often. I thank God that we have each other to talk to and be with each other. You must know that a day doesn't go by that your names are not mentioned. You all will never be forgotten. We often mention things that use to be or the funny stories of the past. It just doesn't seem to be 5 & 1/2 years already.
I do want to tell you of your wonderful children and how they have come along. Amanda & Sara will be graduating soon from college and James is very happy at William Patterson. They are great kids to be very proud of. They have all come a long way. Maureen & you have done a wonderful job raising them. Maureen has done an excellent job keeping things together the last 5 1/2 yrs. Well please keep looking out for us and God Bless you & your family.

Maureen and your children,

I worked with you(Maureen) at a nursery school in USR several years ago. What I remember about you and your husband are at a church dance days after my husband and I became engaged you both came over to us to tell us that in order for a marriage to work never be embarassed to tell the other I love you. When I heard that Don was one of the victims that was the first thing my husband and I thought of was that night at St.Pauls. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your children on this anniversary and every other day. You all have a special angel in heaven looking down on you.

To the family of Donald H. Gregory - I received a "Mercy Band" (memorial bracelet) yesterday, for my birthday. It bears the inscription Donald H. Gregory, WTC. I was very touched by it, and felt a sudden personal connection to this person I had never known. I was reminded of the deep sadness of Sept. 11 that we (the entire world) felt for the families of the victims. As my family celebrated my birthday together last night, I was acutely aware that for all families who lost someone on Sept. 11, this sort of family get-together was no longer available. When I got home from dinner, I felt compelled to find out what I could about Donald Gregory and found a number of memorials about him. I feel as if I knew this fine man, and marvel at the contribution he was to the people who knew him. My heart goes out to the families who suffered such great loss, and particularly to the Gregory family, who I now feel I know. I will continue to wear this bracelet as a daily reminder of the life of a wonderful man, and a tribute to the courage and sorrow his family has had to bear. God bless you.

Maureen,

I met your husband at your home when my son was entering Kindergarten. The both of you hosted a lovely and warm welcoming party and that is just how I will always remember you and Don. Not a day goes by that I don't think of how difficult it must be for all of you. I pray your memories keep you going. They must be many and great. I have only one memory and it was nice and has left a lasting impression on me.

God Bless your family.

The last time I saw Donald, he was about 20 years old, in uniform and an adorable young man. I was secretary to his father, Stanley and came to know Donald's mother Emily and sister Barbara. They all were fine, fine people. And it is obvious that Donald became a fine man and founded his own fine family. To them I extend my deepest sympathy.

Dear Gregory Family, I worked with Don in the late 70's at Shearson. I was just starting out and he was always of help to me. When he went to Cantor, I spoke to him frequently and, again, he was of help to me. During my last few years on Wall Street, I ran into him almost everyday on our morning commute. His smile, more often then not, was often the only smile I got that day. He was a lovely man and I am so sorry for your loss.

Because my father does not use the web much, I will take the liberty of expressing for the both of us. I maybe saw Don once a year, usualy with my father. We would all go to a giants game or any other event that was going on. He never hesitated to extend his kindness to my family. Anytime an opportunity arose to do something good for me, he did. He and my father spoke every day, many many tiimes a day, for decades being true friends and trusting each other in the difficut world of Bond trading. The last time I saw Don was in may of 2001. i visited him at his office to pick up some rangers tickets. It was a beuatiful day. We looked out over brooklyn seeking for my neighborhood. When we went to his office, he pulled out a picture of james and told me about how he was growing up so fast. There was a deep pride in his voice as he updated me on all the family's activity. A day has not gone by that i do not think about that conversation. I can also say that my father will never forget what Don meant to him. My love goes out to the Gregory family.

May Donald's generous spirit, quiet faith, life and love live on in those who love him. Such a warm love story of a caring family man. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Donald. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
