Mandy Chang Obituary

Wanderlust Fulfilled

Oh, the places Mandy Chang went.

Sure, she had traveled far in business, immigrating from Taiwan in the mid-1980's, getting a master's degree in the computer field, working her way up to a management position at the First Commercial Bank of Taiwan. But Ms. Chang's true passion lay in her travels outside of the United States, sizing up new places, making new friends and, wherever possible, testing the swimming pool at every hotel.

Egypt. Russia. Turkey. Latin America. She had been to them all. In fact, Ms. Chang wanted to visit every continent by the time she hit 50, said John Goldman, who befriended Ms. Chang during a May 2001 trip to Turkey. She was 40. She had only Australia and Antarctica left.

"We were always having meaningful conversations about world events or traveling," said Tracy Grinker, another friend, who had talked with Ms. Chang shortly before Sept. 11 about taking a ski trip to Europe. "She was really interested in trying new things."

Ms. Chang once wrote Mr. Goldman that she fancied the idea of retiring in Spain. Naturally, it did not matter that Spain was one of the few places she had not yet visited.

Dedicated, funny, clever, a true I.B.M.'er (Irish By Marriage) Mandy, it was a great pleasure to have known you. You are missed by many.

May heaven open all it's doors to you. May you have systems, which never fail. May God, the creator of the ultimate operating system, explain it all, and hold you close forever. Rest in peace.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I only knew you for several months, but you will never know the ways in which you impacted my life. You made our trip to Turkey a real joy. You were in many ways a kindred spirit. Thanks to you I've gained an appreciation of foreign film. I think of you every day, and ask myself why? I will always miss you.
