Benjamin Clark Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 30, 2001.
He Made a Mean Meatloaf
Cooking in the Marines is not what one might think of as the best preparation for an executive chef.

But for Benjamin Keefe Clark, being a leatherneck chef was his springboard to some classes at the Cordon Bleu cooking school and finally to Sodexho, a food services company that cooked for employees at Fiduciary Trust in 2 World Trade Center. Mr. Clark was famous for his soups and meatloaf.

Mr. Clark, 39, and known as Keefe, was last seen on the 88th floor helping a woman with three other men, according to his wife, La-Shawn. None of them survived. His son, Chaz, 17, saw the attack on the two towers from Stuyvesant High School, where he is a student.

Chaz, his three brothers and one sister would often get their parents to have a bake- off, always enjoying the results but only rarely declaring their mother the victor.

Mrs. Clark still dials Mr. Clark's office number, waiting to talk to him. They met on the subway platform at Penn Station; Mr. Clark offered to escort his future wife home late one night.

He called and sent flowers for months after, until he finally won her undivided attention. "We were so close that everybody said we looked like brother and sister," she said.

Wow. I never got to meet you. But my father had the honor of being your neighbor; and your friend. Since I have been a child, he has taught me so much about your legacy - and your kindness towards my parents when they were simply a small family trying their hardest to conceive a baby. I was born two years and two months after you had passed, on 11/11. I remember being a child and my father telling me stories about you and your beautiful family. As the anniversary begins to roll around and the month of September looms around the corner, I think of you, Keefe. As I research the day and make sure I never forget - you and your family will always be in my thoughts and prayers. You are a hero and a bright, selfless man. Thank you for all you have done. Your children carry on your legacy and keep you shining. We will never forget what happened.

There's not a day that goes by that you don't come to mind. Not because of how you passed but mostly how you lived. We were in Dewey when we met and you went tom the Marines and I the Air Force. We served and were always there to help. Even on that faithful day you were helping. Love you my brother you are never forgotten.

Today once again there is pause to reflect on that horrible day. I also pause to remember the day, but each day I remember you, I remember our laughter, our friendship and the times we spent with each other. As the years go bye I still hold you in my heart. I now have grandchildren and they too will learn of my friend and how special he is still to me. Till we meet again

The pain of that day will always be there and today I pause to remember Keefe's family. Prayers for you to feel the love of a whole nation that was moved to patriotism and love on that horrible day,. May we never forget. Much love from Texas.

On the first anniversary of 9/11 while watching the memorial, I randomly picked two names from the list being called out and wrote them in my Bible. For years I came here every year to show my respect as Keefe's name was one of the two written in my Bible. Over the last few years my own family has been struck with problems and issues and even though I didn't make it here to post I still kept Keefe's family in my heart. I was determined to be hear this year. You are not forgotten, I continue to pray for your family regularly. I will continue to pray.

I am a sophomore at Shanley High School in North Dakota and in my religion class we are learning about 9/11. We had to research a person that was in the attacks and I researched Benjamin. He was truly a hero that day and the bravery he shows amazes me. He seemed like a very selfless man that always cared for others and put others before him. He will always be remembered for his true acts of bravery that day.

Continued prayers for your family as you begin another year without your loved one, Keefe. His spirit lives on in you as well as in those who come here to leave messages. Keefe will not be forgotten, even by those of us who did not know him personally. We will not let those who died on 9-11 be forgotten, or their deaths be in vain. We will NEVER FORGET.

To the Clark family: I had the honor of reading Keefe's name this year. In reading about him, he seems to be someone that I would have liked to call friend. I hope that his son is doing ok. I know that it's not easy to continue on without him, but I know that someday I will meet my beautiful daughter in heaven and you will meet your dad. I pray that all of our pain eases as time goes by. Please know that you will forever be in my prayers.

A message for the family on the 8th anniversary of 9-11:

On the first anniversary of 9-11, as the names of the victims were read aloud at the memorial service, I wrote two names in my Bible. One of those names was Benjamin Keefe Clark. I asked God to reveal to me the names of two people, whose families that He would have me to remember to pray for. Mr. Clark's name is still in my Bible. I still remember the family even though I have never met or spoken to them. I will continue to carry you in my heart - always. May God bless you and keep you until you are reunited with your loved one.

I can not believe it has been three years since my brother has been taken from me. Every September, I honor you by wearing a bracelet with your name on my arm. Honoring you and the friendship we shared. Everytime I see James Bond on TV, I look at the phone hoping it will ring with you on the other end telling me it is on. Friendship is never truly appreciated until the friend is gone. I wish you were still here for me to appreciate. I miss you my brother and you will always be in my prayers and in my thoughts. With fondest memories,

For the family of Keefe Clark. I just recently read your story in one of the New York papers. What a beautiful family you are. I'm so sorry for the loss of your Dad, after reading his portrait he sounds like a wonderful person that gave his help and strength to those that needed it that day. I know he must be living on in you all. God bless you all and keep you strong.

Living in Maine we sometimes feel we are not effected by what happens outside the comfort of our small towns. However, the events of Sept. 11 have bonded us all so closer together. I recently helped move my daughter move home from St. Louis and we stopped at "Ground Zero" on our way back. I had never been in NYC. It's still hard to take it all in.

My deepest sympathies go out to all the family/friends of Benjamin Clark and our Clark family joins your's in your sorry.

May Benjamin's cooking abilities, his life and love live on in those who love him. May the sorrow in your hearts be lightened by warm memories of times shared with Benjamin. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. We are very sorry for your loss. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
